I had this very same question a few months ago and I came up with the exact same response as in this story, though my own answer didn't quite involve the 'sneaking into the factory' part, I just thought that she will diped it into the rainbow pools that she have in her house.
Wouldn't that be easier to do?

Your rainbow mane is recessive, so unless your dad had that gene as well, it is impossible.
Upon re-reading this story for the first time since favoriting it, I have to say it holds up pretty well.
The only part that bugs me is that Rarity tricked RD into wearing the dresses, but I can somewhat forgive that since this story does take place early on in the series.
