Twilight does some heavy duty research in the Canterlot Library, and finds out something that nopony should know. What will she do with this new-found knowledge?

The Elements of Harmony are defeated and Nightmare Moon stands on Equestria's throne as their new Queen. Is Equestria doomed to suffer through night time eternal or will they be... perfectly fine? Twilight finds her new job as slave or "personal assistant" to her new ruler to be a bit maddening. But is this evil sarcastic queen really as bad as she originally believed? And just how many others are diabolical enough to cash in on the change in staff? Can Nightmare truly run a peaceful Equestria? One thousand years ago, Nightmare Moon triumphed over Celestia and plunged Equestria into an era of darkness.

On the outskirts of the great city of Cloudsdale, Rainbow Dash struggles to provide for herself and her only friend, Fluttershy. Her mundane if uncomfortable existence, however, is thrown into chaos when she finds herself arrested for theft and treason.

When Nightmare Moon sends her personal student, Twilight Sparkle, to aid the investigation, things rapidly spiral out of control as events that will change the fate of Equestria unfurl.

It has been a year since the Element's failure, and Nightmare Moon has not been seen. The pressure is finally weighing down on Equestria's new Chancellor, Twilight Sparkle. She still struggles with the events of that fateful night - the night the moon made its permanent place in the sky. After one fateful encounter, though, the course of Equestrian history shifts yet again as she begins to truly see this Nightmare. And maybe, just maybe, she and Nightmare Moon aren't so different.

Twilight is invited to Canterlot to compete with some of the greatest magicians in the world for the Moonstone Cup, a prestigious award for the most powerful and skillful magicians, unicorn and otherwise. Can she win? What sort of competition will she face?

On the night of her return from exile Nightmare Moon comes across resistance as she had expected. However she had a backup plan on hoof for just such a predicament, tearing off a small fraction of her soul and attaching it to the bearer of the element of magic. Now she must play the long game to ensure that she can obtain the loyalty of her new host and once more rise to power over Equestria.

The world of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic lives under the typical definition of harmony: everything living in agreement and happiness. But what of a world where harmony is not a philosophy, but a force? What of a world where the Elements of Harmony uphold a cosmic system of balance despite what others say? What of a world where a thousand years of Celestia MUST be followed by a thousand years of Nightmare Moon?

Twilight Sparkle and her newly-discovered friends find out the hard way when they reawaken the Elements' power and become pawns of this system. Six ponies have to come to grips with themselves, struggling with their desire to fight destiny and their inability to resist it.

Celestia leaves to deal with a foreign crisis, giving her sister a chance to rule alone and become more attached to the modern world. She calls on Twilight Sparkle to advise Luna, hoping her student will be able to draw Luna out of her shell. With two major threats to Equestria already defeated in the past year, it seems like the perfect time to let Luna gain some confidence and experience in the modern world. After all, what are the chances of a third disaster occurring?

Now comes with complimentary tropes.

The elements of harmony aren't strong enough to destroy Nightmare Moon, Nightmare wins. She takes the mane 6 captive for her own pleasure and to use them as her servants. Will they adjust to their new life or will they fight against the so-called tyrant? Maybe looks can be deceiving?
