This is a NON-CANON Rites EU "story." (The characters break the fourth wall completely, so of course it has to be non-canon.) Art by my lovely and amazingly talented wife, Violet Squiggles! You do have to have read Rites of Ascension to really understand this one. You're going to be seriously lost if you start here. That being said, you do not need to read this story to understand what's going on in Rites. This is to add to something already whole (and maybe get a few laughs), not make up for shortcomings elsewhere. Also, I thought it would be fun.

Also, as this is non-canon to Rites, I can go back and change things if I like. Generally, this will only happen if something hasn't been explained in the canon stories yet and has to change for them. Hopefully I won't ever actually have go do that, but if I do, I'll point it out in the chapter.

The dark Princess tells Twilight of the Moon, and a long-forgotten tale of the Age of Wonders ... and how the ponies of that time achieved greatness, yet ultimately failed of their true promise. He has spent centuries wandering the countryside, gravitating towards events. When whispered words of Nightmare Moon's return reach his ears, his feet take him to Canterlot, where what he encounters leaves himself and many others more than intrigued.

An idea that sparked a story. Immortality is an often used plot device with a Human In Equestria story, and I wanted something different, something new, something... fresh. Thus, the concept of mimicking the phoenix came to life, and from it, this story.

(First-Place Winner of Everfree Northwest 2013's Iron Author Contest, now in original and Hyper Drive versions! The latter should prove even more enjoyable if you've read Issues 5-8 of the IDW MLP comic.)

All to bring down the powers that have manipulated and shaped her entire life, and retake control of her own future.

Twilight loves her. She is the Princess, the beautiful, powerful, kind ruler of Equestria. But when the Princess denies her, Twilight vows to become stronger, to be better. Until one day, she will be so powerful that not even her mentor can ignore her any longer. One day, she would make Celestia love her back.

Even the most common sayings can lead into larger things. Twilight sends a letter to Celestia confronting her unjustly founded fears of Twilight's immortality years after the passing of her last friend.

Based off an idea conceived early this morning. Approx 1 hour went into this. Finally have a proper counter to the Twilight Sadfics out there.
