In every world, era, and species, adolescents think they're the first to invent or discover whatever they come across. It's not hard to see why. In the flower of youth, every experience is new and fresh and exciting, especially the ones previous generations won't discuss. Not in polite company, anyway. Certainly not with their children.

Well, "exciting" isn't always the best word to describe those discoveries. Sometimes it's "horrifying." Especially when it involves certain alicorn princesses.

Rated Teen for discussion of topics that would be rated Mature. Also rated C for Crackfic. Graciously preread by Comma Typer.

[Note: This chapter is based on the events of MLP's recent 200th episode, and was written less than two days after the episode premiered.]

It's been less than a month since the unexpected return (and near domination) of King Sombra upon the Crystal Empire, as well as Ponyville and Canterlot. Even though the treacherous foe had been vanquished once more, and Equestria was still safe and sound, Twilight Sparkle was happy to see that the Royal Sisters were already looking into increasing the security measures around their castle. And since the pony assigned to strengthening their defenses was one of Equestria's most skilled unicorns in protection magic -- Prince Consort and Head of the Royal Guard, Shining Armor -- it seemed only fitting to have the Princess of Magic herself test his security measures with the aid of her friends.

Spike and the six Elements seemed more than eager to test their skills against Twilight's brother, but one of them appeared to be less worried about Shining's capabilities than she should have. Is Twilight able to change Rainbow Dash's opinion about the stallion they saved on multiple occasions? Or is there more to Shining Armor's abilities and skills that haven't been seen by them just yet?

What is the value of a secret? What knowledge lurks forgotten in Equestria's past?

After chasing a thief from Canterlot to the desert mountains south of Equestria, Twilight and her friends are beset by tragedy. To save her friend, Twilight will have to delve Equestria's greatest secrets, and discover a truth that even she will wish she hadn't learned. When the thief's full plans come to light, will Twilight be able to save Equestria's secrets, her friend, or even herself?

Written for the July 2014 Pre-Reader Battle, based on the prompt "The Canterlot Archives hold a dark secret." Contains a reimagining of a G1 villain, but does not require knowledge of G1.

Why would you think this is an Adventure Clyde story? That would be silly! This is a Friendship Is Magic fanfic site!

What this IS, is a story about Twilight Sparkle and the young dragon she has an ill-defined pseudomaternal relationship with. He happens to write stories. Some of those stories might happen to be about the Alicorn of Adventure, but be that as it may, this is a character drama in which our protagonist Twilight Sparkle must struggle with Spike's first exposure to the complex legal and ethical minefields of consensuality in adult relationships.

Okay, maybe this is also a literary deconstruction and reconstruction of "Adventure Clyde" (incl. tumblr and associated reviews and written works), reconciling his existence with My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic canon, while staying faithful to the My Little Pony universe and offering subtle and profound observations into the nature of scientific rationality, Freudian psychological analysis, and oranges. But we all like literary deconstruction, right?

Right?

When Spike starts exhibiting symptoms of drug use, it's time for Twilight Sparkle (and her M.A.R.E. pamphlets) to stage an intervention.

If only Spike's drug use was Twilight's biggest problem.
