vacation 1st arc review · 12:19pm Aug 23rd, 2022
ok so to start this review i found vacation in the recently updated on the main page and kind of had it sitting in my read later pile for awhile cause i though oh just some generic story harem maybe zombie but I wasn't sure, then after it got its 17th chapter i deiced hey why the hell not might as well dive into to it and what you you know its actually a dead island and "anthro" mlp crossover but with a pretty good twist, which i will say i haven't really ever seen before the twist being that the "mc" dee is actually a human who know mlp and has played dead island but he's actually from our world but both him and the ponies are transported to the di universe so technically a triple crossover ?.
there's also subtle differences like the plot not following the game kind of sorta and it having different zombies kind of with a little hint that the cars seem to be older models for some mysterious reason and a Russian truck that has a soviet union symbol ? i will say that the twist was almost pretty cleverly sprinkled throughout the story as to give you that feeling that hey its the dead island i know and love butttt there something different things are a bit off and for once the mc is not omni potent god from the twist and this fic actually makes it pretty much seem like every human has to fight for their life and the zombies seem more like something to avoid then to butcher an mass
i do like the focus mainly on either dee or rainbow in the beginning as it makes it easier to have more stuff going on plus the dual perspectives work to show how just like dee the ponies too are pretty much a fish out of water and are with him on how crazy everything's going and also makes it easier to show how different their universe is compared to the cannons one though their reaction and action they do throughout the story
now onto my gripes their isn't a lot i think its a pretty good fic but here's a few that kind of got me to sour number 1 being the how often the mc gets himself hurt almost ever encounter he's getting put though the ringer and barely show it though his choice in the story like if he got recently thrashed it would make more sense to do lighter word like maybe make him do some lighter chores around the lifeguard station maybe have him sneak along the beachside at night to scavenge some knifes and/or to bring back some items from the beach bungalows to help fortify the gates while he's recovers not go out on a run for supplies in the island hotspot where huge hordes are. not necessarily terrible or even a negative but it does have me scratching my head
another small gripe is how much blood and scratches there are now this is just me being curious and nitpicky but with how much you write about our mc and other characters getting covered in blood and/or getting scratch isn't that another way to get infected or sick idk wasn't anything more than wait that's kind of sounds weird couldn't he get infected ?
and the last thing is is the only major thing and even then its more like something nagging at the back of my head and that's the ponies which have me asking so many questions like why haven't we seen pony zombies that because of their weird genetic make special zombies like butchers or something, and their invincibility why even after getting their magic slowly drained away or in some cases almost immediately are they just fucking superhumans like vinyl, rainbow, and limestone are all basically Jackie Chan and make almost every human except kind of dee seem like babies and lastly the mention of other ponies breast and bodies randomly in dialogue just almost kill the tension and pacing and should be a thing he's doing exclusively in a safe place not when their in danger of being spotted by a zombie any moment or escaping zombies.
all in all id give it a 8/10 - 8.5/10
I'm not really good with wording things but i hope i got across how much i love this story even if it isnt perfect, that and its hard to compare as theirs like 10 stories including this one for dead island that are over 10k words
