Once again, I'll be taking a look at my past work and posing the question of... why? Will I know the answer? Probably not, but keep reading to find out! Today I'll be looking at Ponies and Cage and The Beasts of Tartarus!

Greetings, champion! Bet you didn't think I'd actually continue this, did you? Bet you thought I'd go and disappear for two years again? Honestly, wouldn't blame you, there's a bit of a precedent for it. But last time was fun, I wanna keep doing it! So, what's on the docket today?

    Ah. I see.

Contrary to popular belief, I am not dead.

Yo, what's up everyone? How's it going. I'm here with my... what year is it? Ah, yes, 2021.

I'm here with my annual blog post, because let's be real, I've been disconnected from this fandom since like 2016. But I was digging through a lot of old screenshots I had, and had a lot of fond memories of my time in the MLP fandom.

Requesting Stories! · 9:30am May 15th, 2014

Recently, I've come to the conclusion that I really like murder mystery stories. A lot. As in, I'm pretty sure it's my favorite genre. I'm pinning the blame on that to the following pieces of media:

Unfortunately, I seem to be running out of material to scratch this insatiable itch, so I'm growing desperate. So desperate, in fact, that I even went and watched the Danganronpa anime. Yeah, it's bad.

So basically, I need suggestions. I need something to quench this burning thirst for detective work and puzzle solving. I thought about BBC's Sherlock, but I heard that isn't really a murder mystery series, despite being called SHERLOCK.

What do you have for me? It can be anything. Games, movies, TV Shows, or pony fanfics. I just need something to absorb and blow my mind with crazy twists and unexpected culprits. My mind is begging.

Since you've already blown through the Ace Attorney series apparently, I recommend The Wolf Among Us

As for anime I've got two off the top of my head that can hit you with the craziness you seem to be looking for:

Umineko no Naku Koro Ni
& Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni

I'd recommend umineko over higurashi for you particularly since Umineko actually goes in depth with details and deductions and Higurashi is more kawaii before murderous mindfuck, but it still has the plot twist of a century.

Loathe,
Your Antagonist.

Who is best Dingle Ronpus, Alex?

I am Mondo fanboy and proud

Yes. Yes good. I will look into all of these.

2113666 I like noodle head

She's pretty cool. I imagine you like Chapter 6 then, as I am a Chapter 2 guy

Also the anime wasn't THAT bad

You should go check out the classic BBC Mysteries series. Old-school Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple, Poirot, etc. Get sum history and culture in yo veins!

2113734
Oh man, Poirot. That moustache will live on forever.

Why not the BBC Sherlock? You should watch those, if you haven't. Good spins on the classic Sherlock Holmes novels.

It's kinda old, but like Miss Marple, you've got Murder: She Wrote. It's really good (but I still recommend Miss Marple.)

I have a suggestion, but it isn't exactly mystery. It's similar to .hack and Sword Art Online, but focuses more on strategy, talking to people, etc, and the mane character is a stategist. As I said, it isn't a mystery, but you MIGHT enjoy how the mane character comes up with solutions to said problems.

It's called Log Horizon

2113784 I agree, Alex. You really need to see it. It's one of my favorite shows of all time!

Option 1: http://www.fimfiction.net/story/6177/phoenix-wright-turnabout-storm and/or its videos if you haven't done so already

Option 2: http://www.fimfiction.net/story/117929/twilight-sleuth-sparkle-the-bittersweet-soiree Haven't read it (on read laters) but it fits what you're asking for

I'll comment again if i think/find anything else

I highly recommend the Equestria Noir group and the Sherlock Holmes group as they have some awesome stuff an I cannot speak highly enough of The Magician and the Detective

And the incredible Starlight Over Detrot

For real world stuff, definitely seek out old BBC as they did some of the best out there. Mike Resnick does an excellent series about a private detective with some good comedy added. Stalking the Unicorn is the first in the series.

The Nightside Books by Simon R Green are also very solid. Urban fantasy stuff like Resnick's, but pitch black and very tight.

Night Watch by Terry Pratchett is a good one for mystery as are the books Snuff, and The Fifth Elephant.

There's a short story collection called Mean Streets that collects some urban fantasy detectives together and gives some beautiful contrasts of authors.

If you can track down the old Shadow radio series, it's really good as well. I've got some old cassettes but I think it's been put online too.

Another, likely easier to find radio series is "The Adventures of Sexton Blake." Very hilarious and good old fashioned detective spoofery.

For games I recommend Ghost Trick and Hotel Dusk. Both on DS and not hard to track down I believe. (If they are, I'll share my copies cuz these games are incredible) Contact is another with an ambiguous story line.

If I think of more and you haven't rebuffed any suggestions I'll pop back in and add more.

Another great series is Elementary - another take on a modern Sherlock Holmes. According to wikipedia it should qualify as mystery as well.

Monk is a good series. And I think it's still on Netflix. Often the mystery looks impossible to solve (like, seriously) but he pulls it off in the end. The overarching story line is so compelling that we watched all eight seasons in about seven months. Plus it has a great theme by Randy Newman!

Jonathan Creek is another murder mystery series, very british and pretty darn clever

Jake the Army Guy has one.

Bones and most of Psych is murder mystery. Bones is a morbid dark comedy / drama / romance and Psych is more of a comedy.

Or you could play Clue. :derpytongue2:

Edit: Just saw a comment for Monk. That is a very good one for creative twists.

Case Closed. Either the manga or the anime, either is fine. They've published like a million volumes of the manga, it's been going on so long.

And no, as far as I know the series hasn't gotten any closer to addressing why Conan was changed into a small child, or what any of that means.

2113734
2113812
Do you know anywhere off the top of your head I can get those? Like I know there's a whole site full of old Doctor Who, but I'm not sure about anything else.

2113765
I've been following this one. I trust Alexmagnet to do the Phoenix Wright series proud. His icon is Trixie as Franziska, after all.

2113845
Do I need to play any of the previous games for it to make sense? Or are they unrelated

2113851
Hmm... I'll put it on my list of things to check out. Mystery or not, I do love a good puzzle solving! (And that reminds me I need to check out the rest of the Layton games...)

2113784
2113857
I guess I'll check it out, but I feel like it might not be what I'm expecting. If I do end up liking it though, hey, more stuff for me to watch!

2113911
I tried watching Turnabout Storm but the voices were pretty grating for me. Perhaps I'll read the fic and try to give it another shot. I'll put both of those on my Read It Later!

2113920
Oh god so many suggestions. Thanks you based Ferret. I'll make sure to go through these one by one. I'll probably look into the games first.

2113951
I've heard of that before but totally forgot about it until you mentioned it! Thanks for bringing it up.

2113955
Ah, I've heard of Monk before too but I never got into it. Now's as good a time as any, I think. I love the "impossible to solve" things too. That just makes it more exciting.

2113967
I'll check it out.

2114048
Does he? Well I'll have to head on over to his page and find it!

2114280
Good, good, more shows for me to absorb. Like some sort of horrifying parasite that feeds on murder mysteries.

2114884
I don't know how I forgot about Case Closed. I've only seen a couple episodes of it on Adult Swim like 8 years ago but from what I remember they were great.

2114884 I was talking with a friend about that recently. I was watching it under the name Detective Conan like 15 years ago - English subs. I only got to episode 77, but I just read it has over 700?! :rainbowderp:

2113647

Seconding Wolf Among Us.

2114943
they take place in the same universe but are otherwise unrelated. Hell, 3 and 4 are like totally revamped games comarped to 1 and 2.

PresentPerfect

2114943
I do not. :B I would check PirateBay or something myself.

2113699
I totally missed this but YES IT WAS THAT BAD. I feel awful for the people who saw the anime before the playing the game, or even worse, never played the game and only saw the anime. There is so much that gets left out and it is so rushed it hurts. How the episodes should have been laid out were: character building/murder, investigation, trial. Not those first three all crammed together into one 22 minute segment (save for the last episode).

I could go on and on about how the game is far superior but that's about the gist of it.

I'm not usually one for shameless self promotion, but this might be the kind of thing you're looking for. I hope your dislike of Dangan Ronpa doesn't earn me an immediate dislike :applejackunsure:

2117908
It's only the anime I didn't like. I adore the game. One of my faves.

2117077 Well I digress. I wish they did make it longer, though with more stuff.

Seriously Leon said like things before the trial

If you haven't seen the Usual Suspects, I suggest you watch it. Great movie about a crime detective trying to figure out which of five men is the one that murdered nineteen sailors at the docks. Then there's Silence of the Lambs about a young FBI agent who's trying to find the man who's been going around skinning people alive. There's also classics like Dial M for Murder and stuff that you might enjoy.

Also I managed to track down the emoticon list for fimfiction. http://www.fimfiction-static.net/images/emoticons/ Pity it's blocked, but meh.

One of my favorite murder series is Monk. It's discontinued/cancelled or whatever, but i think it's on Netflix or On Demand. It's super good, I recommend giving it a shot:twilightsmile:

Late on the game, but at least few people went the novel route. For classics, you can't beat Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe series (the two or three Tecumseh Fox books are not near as good, but aren't half bad either). Short, but very intelligent reads with some humor; the interactions between the genius but eccentric Wolfe and the man-about-town young man Archie are timeless. Perhaps a little dated, but they hold up pretty well in my call. Best of all, you can usually find 'em at most libraries, or used bookstores for a couple bucks. Start anywhere, doesn't matter much on order.

The other is John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee books, it's more noir to Wolfe's Sherlock. Waxes a little philosophical at times, but again they're quick, entertaining reads. MacDonald also has several other books beyond just the McGee ones, but I've yet to read any of those.

Go watch Jonathan Creek. It's on Netflix I believe. Ridiculously clever murder mystery show.

(The latest series is a bit disappointing, but the old ones are great)

BBC's Sherlock is very much a murder mystery show, so dunno where you got that information. Worth a shot. If you don't like the first ep (First two seasons are on Netflix) then you probably won't like the rest.
