Everfree Northwest 2014 Writing Contest and Writing Panelist Application Form
Everfree Northwest (EFNW) has two announcements from our exceptional writing events team! First up, we have our 2014 writing contest. Below the contest information, we are pleased to inform you that EFNW has opened up our applications form for writers interested in being a panelist at Everfree Northwest 2014.
EFNW 2014 Writing Contest
With the largest and most varied set of writing panels and events of any MLP fan convention - boasting 12 writing panels and events during our 2013 convention alone - Everfree Northwest is fast becoming a literary hub on the convention circuit. Already EFNW 2014 is shaping up to be just as exciting if not more so for both writers and readers, with more panels and events currently in development than ever!
Thus is it my pleasure to announce Everfree Northwest’s first pre-con writing contest! The second in our series of contests, this time we’re looking to showcase the amazing writing talents of the My Little Pony community.
The contest shall be run through the Everfree Northwest FIMFiction group, moderated by the Everfree Northwest FIMFiction account.
Theme:
Show an established My Little Pony villain (e.g. Chrysalis, Sombra, Gilda, Diamond Tiara, etc.) or rival (e.g. Trixie, Lightning Dust, etc.) either being redeemed or showing them in a positive light. This reflects Everfree Northwest’s 2014 convention theme “Villains, Rivals… Friends?”
How to enter:
Publish your story to FIMFiction or as a Google Doc and send a link to either the Everfree Northwest contest email at or by sending a personal message to the Everfree Northwest FIMFiction account. Please include your name (actual and/or fanon) and the name of your contest entry in your submission message.
Prizes:
1st - Inclusion of full story in convention conbook, printed compilation book composed of the three winning contest entries with art from the Everfree Northwest Design team, 1st place sew-on patch, messenger bag, and EFNW 2012 con exclusive Fluttershy foil card.
2nd - Inclusion of a brief story description in the convention conbook, printed compilation book composed of the three winning contest entries with art from the Everfree Northwest Design team, 2nd place sew-on patch, and messenger bag.
3rd - Inclusion of a brief story description in the convention conbook, printed compilation book composed of the three winning contest entries with art from the Everfree Northwest Design team, 3rd place sew-on patch
Community Choice - Community Choice patch
Word Limit:
1000-3000 words
Duration:
The Everfree Northwest writing contest will accept entries from 12:00am PST on February 7th until 11:59 pm PST on March 2nd. Contest winners will be announced after a period of 2-4 weeks.
Judging:
A panel of Everfree Northwest judges from the writing events team, with guest judge Pen Stroke (author of such stories as Past Sins), will review and rate each story. Ratings will be compiled and averaged to determine winners. During the judging process the community will be invited to vote on their favorite story with a poll, the victor of which will win the Community Choice award.
Contest Rules:
1) All entries must adhere to a PG rating. Submissions using elements that could reasonably be considered above a PG rating, including but not limited to adult activity, intense violence, drug use, or material that violates the rights of a third party, will be ineligible for the contest. If you are unsure if your story meets these guidelines and wish to ask, please contact us at
2) Submissions must follow the contest theme in some manner and be relevant to the convention’s My Little Pony theme. Any entries that do not meet these requirements will be ineligible.
3) Stories must be an original work by the author and have not been released prior to the start of the contest. Entries, once finished, can immediately be published.
4) Contestants may submit a maximum of two (2) stories for consideration. If more than two (2) stories are submitted, the submitter will be asked to select which entries they wish to enter into the contest. If the submitter cannot be reached in time for judging, the two (2) most recent entries will be used.
5) Contestants may only win once. If both entries are up for prizes, the contestant will win the higher of the two prizes. For example, if an author wins both first (1st) and third (3rd) place, they will receive the first (1st) place prize and the fourth (4th) place runner-up will receive the third (3rd) place prize.
6) Winners will be selected based on prose, creativity, originality, use of theme, and grammar.
7) Submissions must be send either to the Everfree Northwest contest email at or sent as a private message to the Everfree Northwest FIMFiction account.
8) Any interpretation and application of rules from Everfree Northwest’s panel of judges and its ruling on contest winners are final.
9) Submitters retain all proper ownership of their submissions. By entering the contest the author agrees to allow Everfree Northwest to share their stories on our website, social media, conbook, and/or for use in promotions.
10) Everfree Northwest will cover shipping of contest prizes within the United States. International shipping will not be covered.
EFNW 2014 Writing Panelist Application Form Now Open!
Everfree Northwest is seeking writers interested in being a part of the Everfree Northwest 2014 writing track as a panel presenter! You could be up on stage with other authors sharing your knowledge of storytelling, offering tips and experience to a receptive audience. We hosted 12 panels and events all focused on writing and fanfiction during EFNW 2013—including such panels as plot, character development, setting, literary merit, and advanced literary techniques with events like our Iron Author competition and Author Hangout—and we’re looking to have even more panels and events spotlighting writing for the 2014 convention. We have both returning favorites and brand new panels and events for Everfree Northwest 2014, and we hope you’ll join us in making it the best convention it can be! Our writing panelist form application can be found here.
As always, keep up-to-date on the latest Everfree Northwest news by visiting our website, liking us on Facebook, and following us on Twitter and tumblr.
Eyyy that's within my area! Ah, but I'm not exactly invited to join a panel.
I can dig this.
Wait if we do the writer contest we don't have to do the panel thing do we. ...........................................I hope not
No copysauce?
But yeah, I think I'll try something out for this. The worst that can happen is death, right?
I would love to try out.
May the best author win.
Is there any particular reason you didn't inform us of this content as soon as it started, knighty?
Anyway, I suppose I'll give this a try, assuming I won't have to do the panel of course.
Wait, quick question.
Does the list of characters include such one offs like the Maneiac, Sunset Shimmer, Iron Will, diamond dogs and other various minor antagonists/rivals, or is it just the main ones that took a couple episodes to defeat?
EDIT: Ahuizotl is also part of that.
1841417
Ah, but that is why we have a panel application available. We can't possibly know all the great authors who might be interested, and we don't want to show favoritism just because we follow someone. So please submit an application if you are interested.
1841445 1841473
Absolutely not, in fact you can win even if you can't attend Everfree Northwest.
1841485
Any rival or villain is acceptable. And we aren't racist so diamond dogs and Ahuizotl have a fair chance just like everyone else.
1841505 Good to know.
1841516
Ah, thank you for clarifying. I'm was thinking of doing Sombra, but the Mane-iac could be a lot of fun.
Oh, this looks fun! Sadly, I am not experienced author, so I have little chance of creating a quality story. I do live in Aberdeen, though, so I'll be able to make it up for the con, one of which I have never been to before!
How exciting.
Hey knighty, do you read your PMs?
1841464 I only received the information yesterday
1841542 Even though the information was put up onto your own site a week or so ago?
I guess you can't have eyes keeping watch over every corner of this little online kingdom you built. Oh well, thanks for the announcement regardless.
1841574 I don't know what you mean...
Well, I needed an excuse to do a story with Gilda.
1841505
Alright. I'll have to think about it though.
1841695 Posted February 7th
1841753 ....so? I don't magically know everything that gets posted or whether they wanted it posted or not. I told them I would post when requested and I was a day "late" because I haven't been available.
1841763 Like I said, you can't have eyes watching every little bit of this site all the time. Also like I said, thanks for the announcement.
This sounds it'll be like a lot of fun! I think, possibly, I might enter..
If nothing else, this post just gave me a brilliant idea. I don't even care if it wins, I just want to write it now.
After we write the story are we allowed to send it to our pre-readers and editors for the literature corrections?
1842392
As long as you don't publish it before you submit it to the contest you can preread, edit, rewrite, etc., all you like. Edit away! It will make your submission stronger.
1842485 thanks for clearing that up
Everyone should do this! I helped judge the story contest at last year's Everfree Northwest and a great time was had by all.
1841446
You will fucking win.
If I don't, that is!
...
Yeah, you're gonna win.
brb writing
I'm not sure if I could do this. The word limit is 3000 words, and that is just over the shortest chapter I've written. I'm basically incapable of writing short pieces.
1844303
You can always jump into the climax and add some exposition for how you got there.
I might take a crack at this...
Might do it i had a positive light Trixie one up my sleeve for a while!
Should I enter even if I can't attend the convention? Sorry if this question is silly, but I rather ask than not know
Well, I can't do it, because everything that I'm working on has one theme of that or the other. Dammit.
When is the deadline for this? Did I miss that part?
Bring it on.
Hello Everypony! Thank you again for your interest in the EFNW writing contest.
1847141 Tachyon Xenophile, the deadline is under 'duration.' The contest ends on March 2nd at 11:59pm PST.
1847032 SilentName, if you're already working on a story that fits this theme and haven't published it yet it is still eligible! So feel free to submit currently in progress stories, as long as, as said, they were not published prior to the beginning of the contest.
1846887 Tricky-Step, you don't have to be attending EFNW to win. Prizes will be mailed to their respective winners. Due to prohibitive costs, EFNW will only ship prizes within the North American continent
We're looking forward to reading all of your stories!
1841435 Then let us do battle...
Good lord the competition setting is basically all I've ever written on this site.
But 1000-3000 words?
I do that for setting up the story premise!
Is it okay if I use my headcanon in the story, even if it's been disproven by the show?
Prob going to lose figuring all the best writers on this site are entering...oh what the hell? Let's do it!
1852388
Use the alternate universe tag if you must.
Who to write bout?
Nightmare Moon? Discord?
Does Discord still count as a villain?
1852100 The word limit is mostly to make it possible to fit the entirity of the first place story into the conbook and to make sure our panel of judges can read through all the contest entries in a timely manner. And as Shakespeare said, "brevity is the soul of wit," so I'm sure you can come up with an amazing story in under 3000 words!
1852388 Feel free to use whatever canon you wish! Show canon, comic book canon, fandom canon, or your own personal canon are all acceptable.
1853765 Discord is completely fair game, so if you wish to use him feel free!
1852100
You and me both, my friend.
Dang! I wrote it and its 4400 words! I have some serious editing to do...
