Shortly after the Sonic Rainboom that led to her getting her Cutie Mark, Pinkamena Diane Pie's long lost sister Blueberry Swirl manages to find her after spending most of their lives apart, and she convinces Pinkamena to leave the Rock Farm. Now certain on who she wants to be, Pinkamena agrees to go with her and the two set out for Ponyville in this prequel to the events of Friendship is Magic.

Pinkie Pie is surprised and excited when she sees Twilight Sparkle walking with her dog Spike between the events of Equestria Girls and Rainbow Rocks, but she finds that Twilight is confused and doesn't remember her or Canterlot High. Soon after the encounter, Twilight from the human world becomes suspicious of Canterlot High and begins investigating strange lights seen in the sky, rumored hypnosis attacks, and the appearance of a friend she had lost.

Vinyl wakes up every night from a horrible nightmare about falling through the open sky to her demise, but the nightmares don't end. Her mental deterioration reaches its peak when she falls unconscious at a party, and then begins her search for answers.

Suffering from hallucinations and intense emotional situations, Vinyl Scratch learns to trust the ponies she holds closest as she tries to find the truth behind her nightmares in this tale of friendship and the supernatural.
