Some weird person who writes stories about ponies. You should probably just ignore him.

E

Stupid title aside, haven't you always wondered what a story about ponies, Magic the Gathering, and a horribly cheesy Yu-gi-oh!-esque plot would be like? No? Well shut up, I made it anyway! Watch as ponies play card games, albeit not on motorcycles, and have to defeat a dark and mysterious EVIL that also plays card games because... Um... Well, who doesn't like card games?
Inspired by that picture thing accompanying the story, this fic is a fun thing I've been wanting to do for a while. As a fan of Magic, I've been wanting to someone create a crossover like this for a while. It didn't happen. So what's a brony to do? Write it himself, of course. Not sure if I really succeeded, so any constructive criticism would be awesome.

If you don't actually know how to play Magic, you're going to have a tough time following what's going on (Game-wise, that is. You'll be fine with the plot.). Twilight explains quickly about some of the game's rules throughout the first chapter, so those of you who've never played before may kind of get what's going on.
And for those of you who couldn't give a crap about the story and just want to see what cards the characters are using, the recipes for the decks used in the chapter are at the bottom.

I haven't started reading it yet, and I don't think I have the time today, but damn I'm excited about this :rainbowkiss:
-Glassed

Will you be using all newer cards? I think it would be hilarious if somepony got a Phage and proceeds to troll the crap out of everypony with it.

I FUCKING LOVE THAT GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

man as a fellow Magic player, im thrilled to see a fic finally made crossovering (is that a real word, or i just made it up?). i specially liked that you went through the trouble to make a deck for both Twilight and Spike. hope to read more of it soon:pinkiehappy:

The "albeit not on motorcycles" part in the description got me XDD:rainbowlaugh:

206903
He's a planeswalker, you know.
206971
I prefer making decks with more recent cards, but for some decks I dipped back into much older cards.
207006
Half the fun is figuring out what deck each character would have if they actually played Magic! :pinkiehappy:
Actually, the way I wrote this was that I made the decks, ran about six games between the two, and picked out the best game to write about.

You sir. Get a Zombie horde deck cookie. Army of the damned ftw.

I'm wanting to read more of this story! I really like the way how you describe the game between Twilight and Spike and manage to explain the basic rules to the reader without getting me (as a long time Magic player) bored.

/)^3^(\

As a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh, I would normally love this kind of story... if I hadn't already done as you recommended in the summary and "Write it himself, of course." You actually managed to trump me though, in one major way: You had a card game in your first chapter. Ah, well, I was going to focus more on the dynamic between the between two characters sharing the same body anyway. Still, I liked this, as I like all your work (so far. Don't get cocky). One thing I have to say, though, as someone unfamiliar to Magic: The Gathering, the duel didn't seem particularly one sided to me, which made it a little hard for me to feel happy for Twilight when she won. Heck, I almost felt bad for Spike, but maybe that's because I've been in his exact situation during games of Yu-Gi-Oh! :twilightsheepish: Still, I think it would be easier to get the reader rooting for Twilight and against Spike if she was a little more defenseless. As you had Rarity say "Everyone loves an underdog." and Twilight really didn't come across as one. Then again, I've never played Magic, so what do I know?

I had just planned a MTG fanfic....
You beat me to it...
Good Fanfic though!!!

I see the picture, and I track. My favorite game in the world is not at any party, but on the shelf across the room.

Also "Next thing you'll be tellin' me is that there's zombies in the game, too!"

.. wait until applejack sees a black deck. WAIT! THAT WAS FORESHADOWING WASN'T IT?
You sneaky bastard....

Or maybe I'm just crazy...:pinkiecrazy:

207193
GRARGH! GET THAT DAMNED ZOMBIE DECK AWAY FROM ME! :twilightangry2: Army of the damned is ridiculous! Especially when used with Endless Ranks of the Dead. I should mention that one time I was facing a friend of mine who used it, who conveniently forgot to mention that all the zombies came in tapped just as I was about to win... :ajbemused:
207800
Still, I liked this, as I like all your work
Yes! :pinkiehappy:
(so far. Don't get cocky)
Oh...:fluttershysad:
But seriously, I definitely agree with you. I suppose when I was writing this, I wasn't really picturing it as a very serious duel, so I suppose I wasn't really going for something all that tense. Think of this as the first duel in episode one of Yugioh between Tea and Joey. Except with Magic cards.
209143
I hope you still plan to write it! I'd love to see more of these stories floating around!
209980
:trixieshiftleft::trixieshiftright: Um... No. Of course not...

210222 ...I don't think that's an apt comparison, considering that duel was *checks Hulu to ensure he's not screwing up* one turn long. But I get what you're saying, and it's no big. Just continue this, I want to see where it's going (and, by extent, more card games!)
CardGamesFTW :pinkiehappy:

210222 I also have 2 Grimoires of the dead.

How did I not here about this yesterday?!

*uberglomps ratherhomely* I'M SO HAPPY THAT THIS HAPPENED! :raritycry:

EDITZLOL: Now that I've actually read it... I kinda want to send you deck ideas... kekekekekekekekekeke...

I should get my buddy who plays his to teach me how so this seems less confusing.

210967
GAH! Get off me you crazy brony! Heel! :twilightoops:
Also, I'd love to see some deck ideas! Perhaps I'll be able to steal- I mean borrow some ideas. :trollestia:

....

Dammit, now I'll need to start playing M: TG. Yu-Gi-Oh is still in my life, albeit just barely. I haven't thrown my deck away... yet.

Also: Why didn't you ponify the cards? Dragons are the same no matter what, but still. RD needs some good pegasus cards, yo!

And: Seto Kaiba and Mokuba. When you gonna ponify THEM?

Yew Geigh Oooooh!

Crap, after a failed attempt to get back into the game I read this and wanna play again. I'd probably end up getting some cards for my Spirit/Token deck I tried to construct back when Innistrad got released and then fail miserably.

Welp, anyway, this was pretty good, even if it was pretty much a 'How to play Magic' thing. Waiting for more.

Obviously Dash should try a rainbow deck, especially if it's about speed. Lots of cheap stuff with mana acceleration and a few fatties thrown in. :rainbowdetermined2: The second deck, that is.

Rarity...maybe an artifact deck?:duck:

Pinkie Pie? Actually would try to use something like these. Barring that, either one of the un-sets or red cards that support randomness.

Fluttershy: Squirrel tokens.

AJ, I'm actually having a difficult time placing her; I think she'd end up being a Spike, though.

Of course, you may have different ideas.

I re-read this, and I had an idea. If you are planning to include on-shot villains in this, then Gilda should have a griffin deck, and Trixie being Twilight's rival or something. Kinda like Kiaba and Yugi, only them NOT working together. Or maybe Discord shows up, breaking the rules. Or perhaps the Flim Flam brothers could show up and challenge 2 of the mane 6 to a double battle. Just some ideas.

:yay:
Watch, Fluttershy'll kick everypony's flank

255496 Of course she will! She's the Beastmistress!

Have not read-yet- but i will point out from the moment feeling pinkie keen aired i have proclaimed with confidence that pinkie pie is a planeswalker, with planeswalking to explain her teleportation and clockworking for her pinkie sense with some form of projected planeswalking ability bringing a portion of another reality to herself rather than sending herself to that location explaining the little physics/logic glitches constantly surrounding her. its the reason i convinced 3 coworkers to watch the show and turned them into bronies by declaring it My Little Pony Friendship is Magic The Gathering! good to see someone else saw that link in titles at least.

You know, you made me want to do one of these. Is that alright with you? I don't want to steal your thunder or anything (You are a better writer than me anyways) It's just that I suddenly wanted to do a Magic the Gathering crossover with MLP. Please? I'll give credit and stuffs! :scootangel:

258686
Of course Spike approves! He plays Yugioh on the side! (Of course, he also plays strip poker buy you never heard that from me.)
266711
Scarily enough, that actually makes a lot of sense. I am now concerned about the fabric of space and time...
268285
Go right ahead! What with all the other projects I've got going on, maybe you can get one going that updates more than mine. :applejackunsure: (I'll get the next chapter up soon! I swear! Well, maybe not a Pinkie pie swear...)

Lighthouse Chronologist is a five dollar card

I think dash should use a goblin deck, they are pretty damn fast.

Oh this brings back fond memories of when I played MtG. All cowered in fear of the all mighty Gilda Canyon deck er.. Griffin Canyon deck.
Quick rundown.
1.Griffin Canyon is a land that has: tap to untap target Griffin and give it +1/+1
2.Several old druid cards have: tap to untap target land.
3.Play a card (probably a blue one) to change the creature type of the druid to Griffin
4.???? (you now have a loop that gives the druid/griffin infinite power and toughness.)
5.Profit

It's... nice.:fluttershysad:

Okay, I'll be more detailed: The problem with this story is simply that we're reading about people watching other people play a card game. That's two removes from the actual fun. The opening makes it clear that some greater event is going to take place, but for the moment, it's just ponies and cardboard.

I'm still going to track this for two reasons:
One, there's a ton of potential here, and I'm fairly confident that you can realize it.
Two, it's still a Friendship is Magic: the Gathering crossover, and I want to encourage those, for obvious reasons. *cough and significant gesturing to his own stories*

When I got to the word motorcyckle in the description I did not know what you ment. Why do you duel on a motorcyckle but yet again Sweden never got the 4ds sesion. We got up to GX

COOL. I may have never ever had any cards for that game but I culd give up my acc for seeing that battle live and in 'duel disc mode'

This is relevant to my interests.

Any hope of getting a lot more to read soon?

Update this now you son of a bi-:fluttercry:
No, Fluttershy! Don't cry! I didn't mean it!

I recommend the Grave Whispers deck:
Main Deck

60 cards

24 Swamp
24 lands

1 Bloodgift Demon
2 Gloomhunter
1 Grave Titan
2 Guul Draz Specter
4 Liliana's Specter
4 Reassembling Skeleton

2 Consume Spirit
2 Disentomb
3 Doom Blade
2 Liliana's Caress
1 Marsh Casualties
4 Mind Rot
2 Moan of the Unhallowed
2 The Rack
2 Underworld Dreams
2 Unholy Strength

It is a powerful deck in the right hands and what few weaknesses it does have are easy to cover in Two Headed Giant.

Rarity totally feels like she would be B/W Artifacts. :raritywink:

Rainbow Dash feels like Red/Blue fliers. :rainbowdetermined2:

Applejack feels very green, using fatties and possibly lifegain. :applejackunsure:

Fluttershy feels like white/green "weenies" with such cards as Bloomtender and Caregiver. :fluttershyouch:

Pinkie Pie is red, red, red!

Just my 2 cents.

I smell a Yu-Gi-Oh shadowgames thing with Discord pulling the strings coming... and I like the implications. I hope the girls get some new cards though. What they have isn't nearly enough to hold off against some of the nastier cards in the game. These seem like stylized starters.

That being said, well played.

Don't think it's very fair of Rainbow to have a go at Applejack when she spent most of the game boasting. Double standard much. But then maybe I'm a bit biased because Applejack is best pony

Silly commenter, that's not how you spell Pinkie Pie!

...moving on, brilliant chapter. I've played both a green deck and a red deck in the past and have had far better results with red...also they have the coolest dragons :pinkiehappy:

What, no Crabapple Cohort in AJ's deck?

In any case, you've certainly made things more interesting. I'm definitely looking forward to Pinkie's deck. I foresee combos. Combos everywhere. That, or Ponexian cupcakes. :pinkiecrazy:

...Wait, I have Muscle Burst as increasing power and toughness by a flat 3+the number of Muscle Bursts in the graveyard.

Oh my god, an update? :raritystarry: I love this story. So much win.

Thespurgin is right though, neither deck has anything that stops a flying creature of any reasonable size.

For example, everyone except Spike is screwed if someone gets Iona out because they play monocolor.

Unless you really nerf the villain's deck(s), the heroes will have to cheat or get really lucky to stand a chance.

Also, you need an editor. There are tons of errors in there. I would be glad to edit this if you wanted.

Sorry if I'm coming off as being harsh, I really do like the story. The Luna bit was incredibly lulzy, I want to see more of the Celestia/Luna dynamic.

The chess thing with Discord was pure genius. As a Magic player myself, I really enjoyed the story and can't wait to get more! How often do you plan to update this?

"Wanna go and writhe in pain for twenty minutes or so?" That sounded like a pick up line to me an amazing/horrible pick up line. Also "Your overconfidence is your weakness" "Yeah well being flammable is yours" is a line i will somehow have to work into a conversation. Maybe next time someone decides to annoy me at work.:pinkiecrazy:

Awesome! I love this story.
Anyway, excellent decks for both ponies. Not only did they fit their personalities, but they're good without being ridiculous. Some of the commenters need to keep in mind that these are their first decks. I didn't build decks nearly so well when I first started playing.
On the subject of decks though, I actually run an elemental deck similar to Dash's, but I have four Flings in there. If you're lucky it's a turn four kill, but at the very least you can give them ten damage (eleven if you've got the Soulstoke out) when they try to get rid of your Nova Chaser.
And I don't know why, but I've ot the sneaking suspicion that Fluttershy is going to be the real powerhouse of the group. I can't wait to see what her deck looks like.

1024870
To be fair, they are, well, just starting.
1024924
While Rainbow was doing some friendly boasting, it was AJ that really started throwing insults. (At least, that's how it was supposed to come out. :twilightsheepish:)
1024927
Thought about it for the lulz. The only problem is Crabapple sucks.:rainbowlaugh:
1025140
The decks are more casual, so I wouldn't be too concerned about running across seriously competitive decks.
I would really like to see you edit this story. The more proofreading the merrier!
You can leave comments on the chapter here. Also, if you have an ideas to help the two improve their decks, feel free to leave comments on those as well.
Also, I'm not sure if I'm going to update this too often. I've got a good number of other projects going on. I do hope the next chapter doesn't take another six months! :rainbowlaugh:
1030046
Thanks! Actually, after playtesting Dash's deck a bit, I actually had so much fun with it that I went and made a similar deck for casual games with friends. Needless to say, it dominates 1v1 games. Although I never thought of fling... Oh, I feel deliciously evil right now. :trollestia:

Oh my god, this is amazing. I didn't expect the Yugioh-style game devices to be revealed this early, but it's a very pleasant surprise. I have to agree with Twilight though; those magic headbands (as well as the illusion system itself) would have a ton of applications beyond just card games. Now that I think about it, something seems a bit fishy about the introduction of the battle boards... :trixieshiftright:

Anyway, I love the apparently sapient 'programing' of the creature cards, though if it turns out they really are sapient constructs, I can see the possibility of some ethical issues popping up.

Also, I'm totally nerding out over the shrubbery and 'you shall not pass' references. Keep up the great work.

This fic is best read with the Autocard addon for Chrome; that way, you can see what it was the card did right away, without having to tab away.dl.dropbox.com/u/31471793/FiMFiction/Twilight_Sparkle_lolface.png
But AJ using a Treefolk deck?dl.dropbox.com/u/31471793/FiMFiction/Applejack_lolface.png
I thought she had that turn 'n' burn deck Dash was using. Also, I see Dash, after a few more victories, getting a Rainbow deck because reasons. Course, most stuff would still be cheap in cost, i.e. <5 CC.
