It's actually there for a reason, although perhaps not the most well-thought-out reason possible. This is a little bit of an experiment, and I'm not exactly great at romance.
I hope the storyline doesn't disappoint! There are two chapters after this which should be up before the end of the week, and I'm working on a sequel already.
2617203 It was a bit of an issue before, I guess since people aren't really complaining much about it, it's not really getting anyone else's attention. It was a rule that Sad and Tragedy were not to be paired up.
Well, I thought the definition of tragedy was a story where the villain wins, and sad was a story designed to evoke unhappiness. I can imagine stuff that only fits one or the other. I guess if I had to pick one of the other I'd pick Tragedy to stay, since the story isn't distinctly sad until the ending -- but overall, Tavi's controlled little life makes me pretty sad.
I know the system won't let you put Comedy and Sad in the same fic, which (although I know it was abused) seems a little wrong to me. I can imagine a sad comedy that doesn't have a tragic ending. The Slice-of-Life/Adventure exclusivity thing makes sense to me, though.
Not that it matters what makes sense to me. It's not my site.
The story seems interesting and unique. I haven't really read an Octavia/Vinyl Fic that's centered around mind control. Can't wait to see how this turns out, but its pretty good so far though. Keep up the good work.
There's at least one other, but with different roles: Let The Music Flow. It's angled more towards clop, though. (Not that I have a problem with clop, trust me. )
2617300 Noo, it wasn't that one. The one I meant was about conflicting story tags. It stated that (Don't quote me on this):
Sad and Tragedy should not be paired because a tragedy always has that 'light of hope,' if you will, and it has a tragic ending. A sad story is something that is, for lack of a better word, sad for most of the story, but ends relatively happy. A story that is sad throughout then has a tragic ending would be redundant because the whole thing is sad, there is no 'light of hope.'
I don't remember what the exact words were, but that was pretty much the jist of it. Then again, it is pretty general. I'm sure someone's tried to pull it off just to spite that blog. Hope this has helped in some way!
I don't know. I've never really gotten the 'ray of hope' thing, personally. I always thought of tragedies as the stories where the villain wins, regardless of any 'this could be saved some way eventually'. Whether they're sad or not isn't necessarily a foregone conclusion, because the overall effect isn't necessarily sadness. (Case in point: Trainspotting. The second half of that film is fucking well devastating in terms of how depressing it is. The first half feels like a vicodin high plus a snort of klonopin -- good, in short. It's arguably not a tragedy, but it's still a major downer, and the only reason I wouldn't qualify it as a tragedy is because the winner is something of an antihero, but he's still better than Begbie. If Begbie had taken the money and shot all the rest of them, I'd call it a tragedy.)
The system won't let you pair certain tags, but it let me do Sad and Tragedy, and by my (personal) definition of tragedy this still fits.
That's another thing. Even if they're supposed to be tragic, they should have at least a glimmer of a hope by the end, even if it's just the ponies moving on. In my opinion, if a story ends with no significant change in the characters but a sea of tears, I feel that my time has been wasted.
Which isn't the same thing as saying 'sad and tragedy shouldn't be paired' to me, but I suppose it's up to interpretation.
2619259 Wow... hot damn, you sure know how to make a point. And you did it well. While I still have my opinion, I respect how well you stood up for yours. For that, have a 'stache.
Well done, and good day. (<-- I freaking adore this emote. No matter how much I use it.)
To no offence... i cracked this in about fifteen seconds: My greatest work —- — th—, but my greatest l—- —- you, — d——- beloved Double Time.: but im still sure it confused many people though.... my wibbly wobbly mind and all that. still loving this stoy even if im behind
I hate Octavia's type. I could get past the snooty, rich part— sure; I could even get past how she demonizes electronic music (which is understandable, given her personality), but how she wants to tear down Vinyl still, even after engaging in pleasant talk with her and having Vinyl be rather friendly... that's where I get pissed. Fuck you, Octavia.
Can totally relate to Vinyl's ADD. Like, I never practice anything, much to my own detriment. Hell, I guess the only practice I get is when I'm actually doing the damn thing. It's just waaaaay better doing it hands on, seeing your work and seeing the results it has on people. Really, at that point, it's all based on raw talent and intrinsical awareness, rather than anything honed to the particular craft.
This is how I get paid good at work, I guess.
Oh, and sheer dumb luck at times. Can't forget that. Luck and raw talent are complimentary to each other Wouldn't say they entirely compensate for a lack of practice, but at times it sure seems like it.

Conflicting story tags. Were you here when Wanderer D mentioned those?
This seems to be a rather interesting story. I really look forward to reading more of it as you add to it. Keep up the great writing!

I guess I'm not seeing the conflict? I've read sad, dark, tragic romances before.

Awww, thank you! The rest should be up this week. It's all written, I'm just getting my editor to take a pass through it.
I'm glad you like it!

'Stache accepted, sir, and I can certainly respect a difference of opinion -- particularly one that's been handled in a civil fashion.

The trap is about to be sprung. This is going to get interesting.
