Twilight's fears over becoming a princess convince her to attempt a spell to glimpse the future. Unfortunately, she ends up doing a bit more than glimpsing; the spell turned out to be permanent, meaning she never returned back to her own time, and therefore didn't exist for ten full years.
Her absence caused a fall-apart of the elements of harmony, and Twilight is horrified to see how they've changed without her. She doesn't know how to teleport back, so she instead tries desperately to figure out what happened and piece everyone's lives back together.

hmmmmm do we have a conflict here.....I like the concept, but didn't the spell Twilight looked up saw it was going to allow her to see into the future without her, not actually travel? Then again it didn't say it wouldn't either. Sorry I can be a stickler sometime, I am behind this; to chapter 2

My logic is that Twilight wouldn't have performed the spell unless it was what she was looking for. She wanted a spell distinct from the one she performed in "It's About Time" because that only gave a few precious seconds. It was a complex and illegal spell, which would make it easy to mess up.

Oh sweet, a new chapter! And wow, Sweetie Belle all grown up-- Although I get the feeling it's not all joy and giggles, but that's the alcohol-related service industry for ya. I had a roomie who was a bartender, and I drove taxi for a while; we used to swap some crazy stories... I don't think people realize how often they act like total berks when they're plastered. When you count on those tips, though, that's just how it is.

Twilight traveled ten years into the future, but she retained her age. Everyone else aged ten years in the time Twilight was gone, but Twilight stayed the same.
Assuming all of the mane 6 are the same age before the time travel fiasco, and Sweetie Belle is eight years younger than Rarity...
Twilight used to be eight years older than Sweetie Belle. Sweetie Belle aged ten years. Twilight did not. Sweetie Belle is therefore now two years older than Twilight.
