Changelings.

To most, they are the creatures that almost took Canterlot, shapeshifters able to feed on the emotions of those around them.
While this is true, it is not all there is to the story.

When the Great War began, an alliance was struck between Princesses Celestia and Luna, of Equestria, and Queen Chrysalis, of the Changelings.
The changelings, natural infiltrators since birth, would become spies for Equestria. In return, they would no longer be hunted, permitted to continue feeding as they had for countless years before their failed invasion, provided they not engage in acts harmful to the equine government or population at large.

Of course, that was simply the beginning. As the war began to escalate, Stable-Tec, the company responsible for the life-saving Stables, recieved a request from parties that would, as part of the contract, remain anonymous and unnamed.
They were asked to create something new, something that would allow both changelings and ponies to survive, and promote harmony between the races.

They were asked to create...

2773656 Oh, yes. There will be more.

Interesting so far. Glad to hear the time skipping will cut back. Works for an intro, and well done with that, but some authors just don't know when to stop. In the end, there are a few places where you drag out your descriptions, but the prose is tolerable enough to keep the reader's interest. Please, continue.

This is gonna be really interesting, given how far back it is from the original FoE.

I'm curious, what led to a changeling and a pony having a flutterpony child?

The unofficial canon that I've encountered pointed to Discord turning the flutterponies of old into the changelings they are now.

I'd have expected like a hybrid, or something. Perhaps like in Mass Effect, the changelings would be like the asari, taking the ginetic material, and producing only changeling offspring.

2810058 Wall o' Headcanon incoming!

History
Pre-Discord, Flutterponies solely inhabited Flutter Valley. Shy, reclusive, and unwilling to leave their home, they were considered myths even back then. It was rare for an individual to leave, and even rarer for a group to journey to the outside world, since they found the other pony tribes intimidating at best, and downright terrifying at worst.

So, they stayed secluded, protected by the thick jungle that surrounded Flutter Valley. They were harmonious, if a little self-centred and disconnected from what was going on around them. After all, why interfere in things that didn't involve them?

History passed them by. Discord didn't.

The land surrounding Flutter Valley, impenetrable and defiant in the face of pony incursion, like an enormous Everfree, was twisted from verdant and living jungle to a harsh, desolate wasteland. The region would become known as the Badlands, although, in truth, it was no more intimidating to outsiders than it had been before the change. Just... a different kind of intimidating.

The pretty, delicate, butterfly-winged ponies, all grace and shyness, living apart from and fearing the world outside, were changed as well. They became insect-like mockeries of their former selves, harsh and terrifying in form. The biggest change, though, was what Discord put the most... well, not thought, per se, into. Since they'd lived their lives so seperate, so above everything, he made them hungry. Not just for food, but for companionship, a void that howled inside them but could never be filled by other Flutterponies.

They left Flutter Valley, first in a trickle, then in a torrent, driven by the hunger inside. They sought out the nearest pony settlements, isolated communities, groups of ponies fleeing Discord's chaos, anything to fill the gaping hole Discord had placed in them. They hadn't thought ahead, though, and their new bodies and needs struck fear into the very ponies they needed to survive.

That's when they discovered something else Discord had done. He'd made them liars, in word and deed and flesh.

It's unclear how it happened the first time. A Flutterpony taking the form of a wife or husband or foal, almost certainly. Had they slain the pony whose form they wore? Was it in self-defense, or rage at being denied what they needed? Replacing a victim of the chaotic world around them? Or simply taking the place of somepony who wandered off, never to be seen again?

No matter how it happened, it still happened. Flutterponies had become Changelings.

Before the change, the Flutterponies had lived beneath their Queen. She was Mother and Ruler, the longest lived and wisest. As Changelings, it was much the same, save that Her mind now touched those of all her children as a final part of Discord's "joke".

It's worth noting that, since Flutterponies were so reclusive before being changed, and so different afterwards, that it's unlikely anyone except Discord knows they're the same race.

Changeling/Pony Breeding
Changelings are quite close to ponies genetically, or at least closer than, say, mules. This means crossbreeding is entirely possible.
The only stumbling block is that changeling genes are recessive compared to "normal" ponies, and first generation hybrids are almost always indiscernable from normal ponies. For discussion's sake, we'll say 1-1000 G1 hybrids actually have any changeling features at all, usually limited to a different mane, eye or coat color, with more obvious physical differences (like insect wings, curved horns, fangs) being exceedingly rare (1-10,000).

It also depends on whether or not the changeling parent was disguised at the time of conception, since their disguise is an actual physical change, not just an illusion spell. If the changeling was in their "natural" form, it's more likely that the foal will have changeling features. Not much more likely, but it's worth noting.

Changeling genetics can stay dormant/recessive for generations before the right mix of genes crops up to allow a foal to be born with obvious changeling traits. Similar to an earth pony couple having a unicorn or pegasus foal; rare, but it happens.

So, to answer your question, Lorikeet (Lory), is a hybrid.
Holly was just paying him out because he looks like a Flutterpony from the stories told to little foals.:trollestia:

I love how you handled changelings in the Fallout: Equestria universe. Great story so far, I can't wait for the next chapter!

Dude, you got me hooked just by the title. You gotta write more, you jus gotta!

2810338 theoretically speaking had they stayed in the hive for so many generation, they might have all ended up being hybrids as even with the dormant quality in changeling DNA enough build up would lead to genetic pairing mutations resulting in a full DNA convergence.

you have an awsome concept here. keep going. wanna see the raiders have to mess with a fighting force who can communicate mentaly.

Good chapter again I like where this is going

Another awesome chapter, the idea of using resin as bandages is great!

Bit short but leaves room for me to imagine things :derpytongue2:
So eager for rest of story :raritydespair:

I like it! Next chapter!

Dude! UPDAAAAAATE!!!!!!!

3773752 Due to circumstances beyond my control, I haven't been able to work on Project Hive. By circumstances, I mean a cockatoo chewed through the phone line to my house 2 months ago, completely cutting off my home internet, and it only got fixed yesterday.:twilightangry2:

I'm working on it now, though!:yay:

3773804 YAAAAAAY!:twilightsheepish: Message me, or Skype me if I can help in any way. I'd love to see this thing take off. :pinkiehappy:

Moral,

Er, don't you mean Morale?

Not bad, but it feels awfully short.

3786351 Nice catch. Fixed.

I know this was a short one, but it's hard to write about nothing.:twilightblush:

Just aquestionwhat do flutter ponys eat .......just think about it ponys eat food ....... changleiings eat love so a hybrid eats ? :facehoof:
:rainbowhuh::derpyderp2:

3800243 Don't know if you want the Wall o' Headcanon version, so here's the quick explanation.:twilightsheepish:

Hybrids eat normal food, but they also need love or other positive emotions as part of their "diet", just in lesser quantities than normal changelings. The amount of normal food vs emotions depends on the hybrid.

As an example, Lory only needs about a third of the emotional energy Damsel does, but he needs more actual food, slightly less than a normal pony would eat.

There's a much more in-depth version, if you'd like something similar to the Changeling History below.:twilightblush:

I'm glad to see you back to writing, I really missed it.

I'm really enjoying this, Please keep up the good work :pinkiehappy:

So... it was a good chapter, I thought. Short. But... yeah. Basically, the sun's been up for about an hour, I thought I'd slip this chapter in before bed, and I'm mostly just commenting because I don't want you to starve. :D
Oh, and I hope you feel better soon.
Oh, and the header looks pretty good.
And now I'm off to bed; the quality of my prose is suffering. :)

Yay update! :D

4540682 A few more days, I should be right as rain.
Short chapter is short.:twilightsheepish: Next one should be longer. Or quicker. Maybe even both!:pinkiecrazy:

4542248 Yay comment!:pinkiehappy:

:fluttershysad: get well soon.

the header looks nice, though it's very green lantern-ish in my opinion. take that as you will.

the chapter as a whole feels like a filler more than anything else, except maybe for that shrine bit, but an update is an update

4542585 A few days and a ton of eucalyptus/menthol throat things, and I'll be fine. My breath will smell like koala farts, but I'll be fine.:pinkiesick::rainbowlaugh:

It's meant to look like a Stable-Tec logo in changeling green. I'll try out some others, see if I can come up with something that looks better.:twilightsheepish:

Um... yeah... about how it feels like filler... :twilightblush: It sorta is. Laying the groundwork for the next few chapters, though, which is the best I could do right now, so it's not exactly filler.

i like it,an stable that didn't follow stable-tech experiments, and suviviors ready to adapt on the new wasteland, this is somehting i liked to see, when i was exploring vaults on fallout 3 for the first time.

In glad to see the story still updating, I love these characters!

I really did check. Moslty for laughts.... You know what I'm talking about Cascade....

Hm. Possibly this is just my memory, but how do the changelings know so much about rock hounds?

4634110 Lots of experience. Rock hounds are native to the Badlands, and actively prey on changelings that pass through their territory. Since that territory happens to lay between Flutter Valley and Equestria, the two races have clashed quite a lot.

Hawkeye, Honeycut ... Cute :)

4634152
Ohhh, right. Sorry, I forgot that this Stable opened so early. My model, which the events quite reasonably did not match, assumed no generational overlap between the people who went into the Stable and the people who came out.

This story continues to be very sweet.

Also, it didn't even occur to me that the Regent and Overmare have names. Overmares in other stories rarely have names.

4638069 Of course they have names! It's just rare that they're ever called by them. Them actually being named Regent and Overmare would be like a mayor's real name being Mayor Mare... um, nevermind. Bad example.:twilightblush:

So... yeah. They have actual names.:twilightsheepish:

I think Overmares/Overstallions (there's a rare one for you) aren't named in most stories at least partially as "FoE Tradition".

4638464
BillyColt wrote a story where the Overmare herself is the intrepid explorer of the wastes, and I can't remember what her name is. That's how pervasive the idea has gotten.

4638464
I think most of the time the Overmare/Overstallion, at least the original one, has been dead for some time or isn't relevant to the story and so, while they conceptually have a name, it's not too important. Not using their name also does the job of conveying how disconnected most stable ponies are from their leaders.

Interesting story, so far. Interesting to see one where the occupants were able/had the option to leave the stable relatively quickly. It's a good thing the younger ponies don't know what it was like. I do think that I would have expected more drastic reactions from the security team though. I mean, their home is still technically there, but I'd bet they never had sandstorms like that before. The only hint of the reaction I'd expect is how much no radio contact/hive contact seems to bother them.

4691600 It also emphasises their authority. Much like how Celestia is often called Princess or the Princess, instead of just Celestia. The Overpone is usually the highest authority in a Stable (one or two fics have had other arrangements).

It's only been a few days since the Stable opened. They haven't had time to start worrying yet.:ajsmug:
Besides, Security was a bit... busy when they were up there. Now that the town's secured... well, we'll have to see, won't we?:raritywink:

Dead?

4929109 THAT IS WAY BETTER TO HEAR! THANK YOU FOR NEVER FORGETTING!

"But things are starting to happen now!"
They do indeed seem to be. :)

I'm interested to see what your Equestria only twenty years after the war is like, by the way.

5151843
Since this an FoE fic, it's probably pretty bad and only getting worse by the day.

5153693
Well, it could be getting better only to get worse later, and it could be getting worse in a variety of ways, but yeah. If it started getting better twenty years after the bombs and kept getting better, the stories set at the time of the original would be very, very different.

Nice. :)

But what will happen when they start contacting the outside world...

5573795
I bet they all die horribly... That's just how FoE tends to go more often than not.

I'm not sure when the slave trade began in Appleossa, but with only 20 years since the bombs fell,-if there are any slavers- it should be a miniscule amount of then. I find it kind of odd how none of the flight capable of the hive/stable have yet to breach TBD cloud cover. Aren't They the least bit curious about the pegasi? And what of the fate of Lory if they do find survivors in Flutter Valley? What if he were to encounter some over-zealot Changelings that exclude him for begin a hybrid? I hope they can reestablish connections from the town to the rest of the wasteland. It would be a boon for them to have trade.
