Professor Paradox brings Ben to Equestria as he is asleep and is placed under care of Pinkie Pie to befriend him and help him with an important mission in Equestria. When Ben wakes up he realizes he have turned into a pony and that now he is under the especial care of ‘Aunt Pinkie Pie’.

That would hide his rather alien name, but still be a name that can be shortened to Ben and also give him a 'family' link to Pinkie.
When Rarity sees Ben's watch, she's going to ask questions about it, as well as try to take it off of Ben. We all know that can't happen, so will Ben be dragged around until somepony can stop Rarity trying, or will the Ultramatrix accidently trigger and cause a bit of a panic? Since the author says this story is before & during 'The Return of Harmony' (2nd season premier), at least it won't cause panic of "CHANGELING!" (Ben's changes are green light. Changelings change with green fire). If this was start of season 3, then Ben would be in big trouble.

In the Ultimate Alien force series Azimuth said that the Ultimatrix is an inferior design of the Omnitrix in which it doesn't have all the fail safes programmed inside of it but it still has a protocol to protect the wearer by either transformation or projecting a barrier.
