This story is a sequel to Golden Age of Apocalypse - Book III: Legacies

A Tale of the Berylverse.

The closest thing to an official Guild mage that the small remote town of Radourmeire's Rest has, Beat is a smart, talented mare. It's just too bad she lives a dead-end life in a nowhere town with no hope and no opportunity.

Today, that will change. Soon, her family's past will come to haunt her, and the fate of Equestria, if not the whole world, hangs in the balance.

Hmm, curiouser and curiouser........

Great chapter, but poor Beat.
I felt so sorry for her at the end of the chapter.
Hopefully things get better for her in the future, but we'll see, I suppose.
Looking forward to the next chapter, Shin.
Onward and upward!

I felt so sorry for here at the end of the chapter.

But do you feel so sorry for there?

11126189 Yes.
:facehoof: Sorry 'bout that.
*grumbles* Stupid typos.......

New chapter! Huzzah!

And things are getting more and more curious.
Wonder what will happen next, and especially what's up with that strange creature at the end there?

Curious.
Most curious.

Finally, with a loud, inequine roar, a massive figure of green erupted into the sky in rainbow fire. Beat looked up and saw the creature from her nightmare. What looked to be a titanic caterpillar the size of a mountain, glaring at the world with burning, sulfurous eyes, its spots glowing red and yellow as if they were made of pure flame.

“i Am FrEe,” it boomed, “AnD sOoN tHiS wOrLd WiLl KnOw My PaIn. iT iS wRoNg FrOm BeGiNnInG tO eNd – I wIlL mAkE iT rIgHt!”

It’s real, she thought, looking at the beast as it towered over all in the area. The Bane of the Western Keep. It’s real – and it’s free….

Well. This doesn't sound the least bit ominous.
Nope, not at all.
Beat, darlin', just what in every level of Tartarus have you gotten yourself into?!

On another note, this is a great chapter, and an awesome birthday "present" for yours truly.
Can't wait for the next chapter, and beyond!

That is an interesting cover art. Alice in Wonderland reference. I wonder what this is about...

A Tale of the Berylverse.

SOLD! ...err, I mean, good to see another fic in this series. Paint the Sky is only a few chapters away from completion.

Let me see if I get this straight... Every year, for the last five years, she has failed this test by slightly more than five points in one of the portions (written, practical, etc.), and only in one portion per year, and the portion is different every year? I am honestly wondering if Aurora has been pulling strings most wouldn't think her smart enough for her to have access to, or if the scorer has it out for Beat for another reason. Having the point deficiency jump around like this is ringing all sorts of alarm bells.

Glad to see someone notice in-story how suspect Beat's "low grades" were, as well as a lack of a Guild office near a Nexis. If it turns out that her getting shut down was due to old orders from Starswirl in order to keep Lance's bloodline in the area, and the town being ignored in order to keep outside forces from noticing it, I reserve the right to feel smug. Not "calling it", per se, just stating up front that if this was all the Bearded One's fault, smugness will be felt.

Oracle Dynamine

Wow. Every single instance of Oracle Dynamite's name was misspelled. That is impressive in and of itself. :facehoof:

Also, sheesh! The Caterpillar exists outside the confines of the Fourth Dimension, and was watching our heroes before it was released?!? No wonder it considered Discord's antics as "quaint" last chapter. :twilightoops:

Edit: Also:

After ten thousand years I'm free! Its time to conquer Equestria!

Is this a Berenstain Bears thing? Because I could swear that every single instance of her name in GAoA was spelled Dynamite. Because every time her name came up, I wondered "But why Oracle Dynamite though? Did she come from a mining family or something?" Every. Single. Time. Right until the big reveal. And then nothing. :twilightangry2:

*Skimming "The Veil"*

...huh. Have I been misreading it this whole time?!? Because at least Dynamine (as you have explained; Google keeps talking about medical supplements) has some sort of payoff! :facehoof: *Copious amounts of HeadDesk can be heard*

11149564
Nope, it was always spelled Dynamine. I've been using the name since AAG.

11149564
The association with butterflies is why I chose Tiny Dynamine as the cover identity for Chrysalis in GAOA proper. In the research done for 7DSJ and GAOA, there's evidence to suggest that 'Crisalide' actually was an old Italian word for Butterfly.

Have I been misreading it this whole time?!?

I thought I made it clear that I was acknowledging the error as being on my side. Can we please change the subject to my Power Rangers joke? Or how Caterpillar showed up in-story before he was freed? Or literally anything else that doesn't make me want to slam my stupid-assed head into a flat surface?

Rest easy, Oxford. You have earned it. Your long vigil is at its end, and it has borne fruit.

“When this is over, I’m going to ask Twi to look into it. You’re an incredibly talented mare, Beat, and for all the times you’ve been turned down and such, I suspect that something was done on purpose. I don’t know why, but I have my suspicions.”

“Yeah, you’re not the only one. From what I can tell, you buck serious ass, mare, and knowing the Covenant like I do, I think you were targeted,” Corner told her.

Be it someone keeping a branch of the Lance bloodline in the area in preparation for current events, or a fiend trying to sabotage the True Heir, I officially declare it Called. Chekov's Gun has been fired.

...apparently it is the root word from which Dormouse was derived from. Not that I am able to trace it back, I'm just taking the various Wikis I checked at face value. And I checked several. If the word "Languedocien" as a French dialect means anything to you, you're doing better than me.

Yet another awesome chapter, and things are REALLY picking up now.
I wonder what awaits our young mares next?
We shall see, methinks.

Also I recognize this:

out of the strong came forth sweetness

is from Judges 14:14, and is part of Samson's Riddle: "Out of the eater, something to eat; out of the strong, something sweet."
Well done, sir.
Looking forward to the next chapter.

The dream logic on display is truly on-point for the source material. Also, Beat's birth name keeps throwing me, since it is also used by the Fandom as The Great And Powerful Trixie's birth name.

Just my luck. Last trip into town, I stocked up on Hot Tamales rather than Snickers Snacks. :pinkiehappy:

That ending: Oh, right. Cheshire Cat was name dropped, but never made an appearance. Makes one wonder what other Wonderland Residents on both sides of the conflict are still kicking around.

That Author's Note: Ouch. I think we've all had writer's block that would only break by tilting the original premise on its side. Turning it all the way on its head, though? That was a Wonderland move if ever there was one. :moustache:
