Blade Star

A fan of MLP since March 2013 and a die hard fan of Princess Luna.

A year is a long time. A lot can happen in a year, particularly in Equestria. Follow Bones, his friends and family through twelve months of life in Equestria, from working on Sweet Apple Acres, to teaching at the School of Friendship, and occasionally facing up to world ending threats. Experience a mixture of a slower pace of life with the odd bout of action in the last story in the series.

So far, all very wholesome seeming stuff, if a little mundane compared to previous stories so far.

I have to admit, before I wound up here, I never really liked Princess Mi Amore Cadenza . I always figured she existed just to sell more toys for Hasbro. Plus, I always thought her ‘love magic’ was way too close to the magic used by the changeling that tried to impersonate her. I thought she forced ponies to fall in love. But in that regard, I was mistaken. It’s a little hard to describe what it is. The best description I can give is that her magic causes the fog to lift. It doesn’t create any new feelings in ponies, it just makes them more apparent. And her intervention helped me realise that love I felt for Applejack, which I had previously been repressing under layers of claimed asexuality and mental dysfunction brought on by bad experiences in high school.

Eh, personally I found Cadance getting involved to be a reason why they shouldn't be q couple. Mostly because of HOW she got involved, but the relationship with tine proved to be very genuine despite the princess' interference. Basically, it was because Bones said "no love magic" to which she agreed, only to almost immediately break her word and use her magic on him, making him change his mind to what she wanted.

“Sure sounds better than settin’ snares or puttin’ anythin’ down,” I agreed. “I was gonna go see Lizzie tomorrow anyway. Want me to stop by then?” Applejack nodded.

Bit of a sour note here, as they're likely still ignoring that what was done to Lizzie was horrible. I maintain the idea that the only way everybody could be ikay with what happened is Discord using some for of mind control on everbody.

With that, I tucked her in, checked under the bed for monsters, wished her a good night, and turned off the light, closing the door behind me. Tiptoeing, as much as you can with hooves, past Granny Smith’s door, from which I could already hear snoring, I made my way back downstairs.

More very wholesome stuff.

I just realized was it ever stated why it was only Bones who got turned into a unicorn on arrival?

10500854
Its never really explained, but the leading theory is because he was an qvid fan of the show and had his own ponysona. Basically it was because he already wanted to be one.

With Lizzie, its the opposite. A supposedly reformed Discord turns her into a pony despite her saying no, forces her to love and want it, tells everbody he never intended for her to have what she chose for herself, and despite this nobody in the cast cares that she was abused. Its the one thing I don't like about this series, because everybody qcting like abandoning her to Discord's whims is a good thing breaks the established character dynamic.

10501050
I don’t see anywhere in the Lizzie is a Pegasus arc where she was forced into loving being a Pegasus. As for Bones I thought that might’ve been the reason but didn’t know for sure

10501376
Near the end of it, when Lizzie says she wants to stay a pegasus Discord cheers and says he was right, then openly admits to everybody that he planned to do it all from the beginning. He planned to turn Lizzie into a pegasus and make her love it so much she would beg to be one forever, even if it was done to her against her consent. Everybody knows Discord fully intended to override her decision at the start of the arc, which was her outright telling Discord she wanted to be human.

Discord outright admitting what he did and that is was premeditated shoukd have Lizzie's family and friends enraged at him and demanding he undo what he did, vecause it ultimately isn't what she actually wanted. Instead they let him get away with it, which breaks the narrative because the cast doing nothing would mean nobody cares about Lizzie at all.

This is ignoring the fact Lizzie's Cutie Mark was never qctually gained legit, but was instead forcibly applied to her when he transformed her when she said no, pretty much showing he imprinted her with a "special talent" for flying to make her love it and want to stay that way.

Still, we can argue shadowy conspiracy theories until the cows come home. The upshot is that she’s happy with her new life, just as I am. And while I’ve never been able to fully trust Discord, I don’t think he ever did have malign intentions in doing what he did. It’s just that...well, everything Discord does often comes with strings attached. That and, six months later, he stabbed us all in the back and briefly sided with a magic sucking roid monkey. Putting that last jab at the draconequus to one side, I turned to my little sister.

And just like that, my enjoyment plummets again. The idea that everything is perfect even though she was coherced into "consenting" to something she said no to disrupts the family dynamic, as well as calls into question their morals.

10512972 I've done a spot of editing on that front. Re-reading, it does seem a bit too blasé about the whole thing. Let me know what you think.

10514280
Its not really the dialouge itself, but what it says. Mainly that everyone chose to let Discord do what he wants with Lizzie, and pretend that's okay. So whenever something points back to it, its a reminder that they all let a bad guy get away with hurting someone for no real reason, and that the one who got hurt will never recover because nobody cares. That's why I hate whenever she shows up at all, its a reminder of a problem that will never be solved.

Officially C, head canon is now B

With abimals like cows, I woukd say its more symbiosis. They're sapient sure, but since they aren't very intelligent they're more like legal minors, and their being farm animals is more them paying rent.

The vision is concerning, but unless its touching on a certain plotline from the comics there being more than one coyote doesn't really make much sense, nor there being a distinction between good & bad medicine with what it symbolizes.

Hmmm. Well personally I don't know really why you thought that or how you intended to qccomplish it, because he never really seemed like a Gary Stu to me. Ironically that's an aspect of the character/story that doesn't feel lacking.

The first half of the chapter I honesrly think Blade Star was right at the beginning, mostly because Twilighr having abother one of her breakdowns because Celestia sent her an ordinary letter with nothing urgent about it demonstrates that Twilight isn't ready. A transition of power is an eventuality but such a total one is insane, there needs to be a more gradual one as Twilight is tutored on the actual intricacies of being the eternal head of state for the kingdom.

The second half... I dunno, feels hollow or lacking? Bones doing it for his family feels like it only words instead of holding meaning. Besides, Sombra isn't even his enemy to fight, and the fight against Sombra had already met its final end in a previous story.

I'm likin' what I'm seein' so far, Blade Star. Keep up the good work. Making me jealous, you is. I don't mind.

multicoloured palate of rainbow coloured apples.

That should be 'palette', friend. 'Palate' is in your mouth.

Great chapter. Greater storytelling.

10568847 Thanks, on both counts. It may not be popular, but I enjoyed writing it. :derpytongue2:

At girst it took me a bit to remember just about where you were in canon, I wasn't sure if these three had been turned to stone yet. As for the rest, the forest fire I conntined onto pretty quick before it was outright stayed, and Braeburn my guess was something like qn alllergic reaction as well.

That bit with Sombra though... yeah, both kinds of control are horrible, although I think they're all gar more familiar with one of them they they know. Hopefully Blade Star will be able to put what he learns to use, it would be terrible if someone was left like that. :ajbemused:

Edit: I like the current format, but snaller chapters wouldn't be remiss if they were for things that would make a chapter in and of themselves.

Is the costumes and serenading from canon? Because it just feels bizzare how ritualistic it is. And Elusive showing up certainly raised an eyebrow for me, is he going to have any reason or significance behind appearing or is it just a quick cameo?

10573864 Well, in the episode 'Family Appreciation Day', Apple Bloom ended up in a bunny costume, jumping over watering cans singing the alphabet song as part of the zap apple jam making process, although the reason behind it, and many of the other odd things about making zap apple jam are left unexplained. As for Elusive, he's just as a cameo here, but will be featuring in a story I'm working on as a secondary protagonist.

I really liked this chapter, so much was interesting. It certainly invoked some emotions in me for sure.

The bit with thw Red Baron had me thinking, if the plabe was shot down it technically wouldn't be a cruel act. The part where Blade Star and Applejack where being sweet on each other was hands down the best part. Gallus too I felt for, I mean really felt. Grandpa Gruff though... I don't know much about him but he does seem like he cares, but also with where he's lived I doubt you could tell under the mountain of issues he's carrying. Inviting Gallus to the Family Reunion was also nice as well, even if it made it q little sad by point out how his family had failed him. Like, what does one do with family members that aren't even conscious of how short they've fallen?

Gallus and his family issues ked well into the end, with how all the disharmony is going on between the tribes. Discord is doubtless behind it, by proxy at least

Well, here we are at the end with pretty much everything major wrapped up. Big Mac has married, the villians been locked away for good, and Blade Star has jad a talking to that says his own relationship with Applejack might go further. But even if they've gotten their happy ending though it still feels a little lacking to me. Mostly because I don't want to see the story do a timeskip without ever resolving Lizzie being transformed. If they never stand up for her and fix her then they've effectively forsaken her long ago.

Great choice of music for the chapter, Bones. If I could, I would change one line in the song to make it completely appropriate.

That line is When the Princess goes through the Castle doors, does what she says she'll do...

Eagerly awaiting the next chapter.

That was very true, since I had quite the pleasant buzz going right now. Her explanation though was quite interesting too. Dad had always said he got stranger clients as a solicitor when there was a full moon. Even teachers at school used to say kids would get more disruptive around that time. Luna’s comment linking her own name to the notion of insanity however intrigued me. Could her constant exposure, or innate connection to the moon have somehow played a role in her fall?

I would love to see that conversation

10601126 If you think about it, we have found a way to burn water, or at least, hydrogen, whose only by-product is water. It could power electric, zero emission cars, without the need to charge up on the mains powered by oil and gas. Yet I understand the US government has banned all further research into hydrogen fuel cells due to the risk of explosions, despite some successful experiments by Honda. Thank goodness petrol never does that. :trixieshiftright: Petrol stations wouldn't even change that much, since you'd still use a pump, only pumping liquid hydrogen with an airtight seal. The EU refuses the try it due to the costs of retrofitting. Yet surely we'll have to at some point when it becomes unfeasible to use fossil fuels. Then again, the Germans still use coal in their power stations and refuse to use nuclear power. So instead we all use electric cars that take eighteen hours to charge, kill their batteries in five years, and still rely on fossil fuels for power.

10602338
I know about burning water- I do it all the time in the kitchen.

About H2 vehicles- I believe Iceland has done a lot of work in that field. Why do most places not do it? Established interests, of course.
Remember, common-sense logic does not work with tycoons. You have to use their logic, if you can think their way.

10602345 It's a strange system you Yanks have. A government of the people, by the people, and for the people, except when the oil lobby says otherwise. :unsuresweetie:

The Cider Press got me thinking they should replace it. Not with a automatic or magical 8ne, but construct a replacement one. One that makes the cider like the old one does, but made entirely of modern parts and built to last so they don't have to constantly repair it ir treat it with kiddie gloves.

The part with Discord actually moving in with Fluttershy was a surprise though. If he's going to be with Fluttershy shouldn't he be a pegasus? It was quite some time ago but I remember it being a thing that you have to be a pegasus to be in a relationship with one.

Just when you thought things could not get any worse...

What is it they say? Ponies plan, Weather laughs? Or something like that.

10614087 More like pegasi laugh, considering they control the weather. :trollestia:

10615255
Aye, I will concede that point to ye.

Wish I thought about it.

You probably could have gone further, asking them WHY they decided to be evil villians in the first place. But that would probably be something to make up a whole story on its own I think.

Hoo, next chapter is the last. Don't know whether to feel excited, or resigned and depressed.

10624489 Well, I hope that you'll like it, as I've finally tried to address fully the great elephant in the room that is Discord and Lizzie. :derpyderp2: It would be interest to explore villainy further, but as you say, I could probably do a whole story on that. Might be an idea for another day though. Celestia knows I want to move away from HiE stories after this and work on something new.

10625489
That's good to hear. It may seem like q small thing to get hing up on, but there isn't any real way that it could actually work for what happened to be "how it was meant to be" or right. It only makes sense either as mind control, or the cast making an arbitrary exception from their own morality.

*crosses fingers* C'mon, last chance. They go back for their friend, or they abandoned friendship with her from the start.

“That was not what you said though,” Mudbriar persisted in an emotionless tone. Yeah, I’d bet ten bob he’d tick all the DSM V boxes for Asperger's, or whatever they call it these days.

Having actually been recently testing and found to have been autistic all this time. Aspergers has now been put under the umbrella of Autism. Just thought you’d like to know.

10634707 Thank. I'll fix that now. I can't help but find it a little concerning how five pretty diverse conditions have all been relabelled as one disorder. Although in the case of Asperger's, considering recent revelations about the man, I can imagine not too many people are comfortable with the name any more. :twilightoops:

10635013
I don't see how whatever someone did with their life would reflect badly on people born q certain way. :facehoof:

10635608 I meant that some people with a diagnosis probably prefer to use the ASD label, given how Hans Asperger, as it turns out, actively cooperated with the Nazi euthanasia program targeting children with learning disorders. Just as modern medicine no longer uses the word 'moron' or 'retard' in a medical context, Aspergers has become something of a dirty word for some in recent years.

Yes, may this year be better than last year. Mine was pretty bad. Trying to be optimistic for the New Year. It's a struggle.

Wonderful tale, Blade Star. May I get to be a tenth as good as you are at telling these tales. Thank you.

So, what's next? I shant speculate. More than likely, I'll be wrong.

“Because Queen Celestia didn’t fly at the Hasbro pitch meeting,” I responded jokingly.

Also because Disney ruined the idea of there being good queens for little girls.

10645038 I think we should take a lesson from maritime history this year; draw a line under the Titanic and work up. :trollestia: As to future projects, I'm planning to move away from the HiE genre. I'm currently working on a story involving Tempest Shadow and have a sort of romance story planned shipping Luna and Stygian. There's a couple other ideas still in the idea phase too.

Still, it played on my mind a little over dinner. And unbeknownst to any other us, Discord was planning to, at long last, make reparations.

*screams and vibrates in place*
So, so very much catharsis. Maybe its just me being selfish bit I never could get over that it felt like a "the emperor has no clothes" kind of situation. Also never could like Dewdrop because of it, he seemed to be sort of chain to keep her like that and him not sticking up for her made him seem like he'd not be q good match. But for Discord to actually redeem himself is something I never actually expected. Maybe a member of yhe family finally speaking up, but not Discord doing what they should've. Still, its good to finally be able to put that one reoccurring concern about the story to rest as it ends.

10646655 I was tempted to put in the A/N 'There Vaalintine, are you happy now?' :rainbowlaugh: Glad you approve.

honestly with a lot of things, especially early MLP it was more 'what can we do to make a point to children. ' So it was more an agency tool for the writers than something that even crossed an exec's desk, let alone be considered in any capacity.
And yes, definitely over-analyzed by the community.
Which is one of the reasons I like MLP fan fiction over a lot of others. the blase approach about throw-away presentations gives so much more room for interpretation. Background ponies are the best example of this. Most had no lore or canon attached to them in the show. A lot still don't but the community took one brief appearance of a random pony and used image that to create whole character traits that are now head canon for most of the community. Lyra, Bonbon, Derpy and Vinyl Scratch are the best examples of this. you know who these ponies are, what they do and what they are like. All of this, right down to their very names, are fan created. It wasn't until much later that the show incorporated some of these fan made traits into the characters (while ignoring others, for reasons. looking at you Muffins).

I'm getting DS9 vibes about Elusive's backstory

still a good story. still bingeing the series

going to point out that the cider-sqeezie did in fact serve quality at the start. when the sceptical granny tried their brew after hearing their claims, that was not a face of disgust , that was a face of 'oh, shit! ' that she pulled. she knew it was up to their claims and was in competition with them.

the competition was't about quality over quantity. it was modernization over 'mah traditions' that best background pony fixated on sometimes.

Why are you evil?
Our existence demands it.
Even when your actions in pursuit of evil counter your self-interest?
Our interest is in our existence, without it our purpose is not met.

This is what I took away from that meeting. It is depressingly sad to have a character acknowledge they exist for the purpose of being evil. They have no reason to be, beyond as a foil for another.
It is a sorry life to only existence as a part of another's story. not to have an equal scope of life that they do.
When you are not, in fact, the hero if your own story, but the villan.

And you know it.

10688031
You know, this one aspect of the show I really disliked. It would literally take all but two minutes to make a plausible motivation for them, fuck I'll do it, and I'll time myself.
Tirek: saw equestrians as well as their ways, weak. So he sought to rule them. Scorpan instead developed a better rapport and decided that Tirek's plan would ruin something incredible. After Scorpan's betrayal Tirek wowed revenge and the years in tartarus only served to worsen his psyche.
Chrisalis (this one is even easier): she felt the hunger of her species on a personal level and saw Equestria's prosperity as an afront to their misery. Centuries of hunger drove her to madness.
Cozy Glow: as a daughter of a merciless high Duke outside of equestria she saw friendship as a means to power. After her father's empire collapsed and her father's rage at princesses, apparent, ignorance of the situation, Cozy decided that she will use Equestria's own ways against them.
There, done, took about a minute.
Mind you I have nothing against evil for the sake of evil, but ffs even Lex Luthor has an agenda.

I got a question. When da hell are ya gon' pop tha' question?

10751125 Well, partly due to the finale, and partly due to the characters, I'm afraid that won't be happening. Not everyone who's in love ties the knot.
