Seafoam Green is an artist, well-respected in the community and held in high regard among his peers. Unfortunately for the hippogriff, his talent catches the eye of Queen Calyso, who decides that he will create her official portrait. Little does he know that this is the beginning of a path which will change the course of fate on Mount Aris.

Written for the Ponyfest 2020 Iron Author competition with a time limit of two hours and three mystery prompts to work with. Their ranking system was a bit... convoluted, but it arguably took seventh place. The story has been slightly expanded and cleaned up for posting.

Hippogriff history! I like it. The ending twist was amusing, but the turnaround felt too sudden. Did Granny Smith intentionally sabotage her yellow apple yields because she didn’t like Calyso?

Is the spelling of Calyso’s name intentional, or did you mean Calypso? Whatever the case, her yellow coat is a nice touch, because it explains why Skystar is yellow.

Perhaps it was a bit quick. I could have fleshed it out more in the post-contest rework, but I didn't want to change it too far beyond what was originally done in the timed event. As for the name... there's not much standardization for hippogriff names so I just picked something that sounded "stormy". I see why it felt familiar, though I was a touch off the mark. Might go back and add that missing 'p', assuming it's not already the name of a canon character.

Hippogriff names in canon tend to have something to do with the sky and/or the sea, and are two words. The only exception is Novo.

Have you considered adding a “hippogriffs” tag to this?

Didn't realize it existed. Thanks!
