1: Scootaloo 2: Rumble 3: Sweetie Belle 4: Apple Bloom 5: Fluttershy

E

Scootaloo is mysteriously far from Ponyville. the only way back home, is through flight, something that she thought she could not achieve.
inspired by 'The Future' by Matthew Mosier, and 'The Equestria Train' by MysteriousBronie.

A lot of technically-inclined Bronies have wondered how the Pegasi fly; they're too big for their wings to generate enough lift, even if they have light honeycomb bones like birds do. The only explanation is magic - air magic. Just as the Earth Ponies can shape rock and wood and cause plants to grow, Pegasi can effect the air and weather. It's logical really to say that their flight is at least partially magical in nature.

Of course, as Twilight would point out, the first step to harnessing magic is not just will, it is to break the disbelief barrier in your mind. You have to know why you're doing it and let it flow through you. That's what Scootaloo did here.

Oh good god, are you reading my mind?
(Your first sentence is almost verbatim to part of a conversation in the fic I'm currently working on)

I hadn't realised that was what I was doing when I wrote it. I did, however, include it in brainstorming and forethought, I was just too tired and mentally fogged when I wrote this to give it conscious thought.

and before anyone asks, I was tired and mentally fogged, because it was very late at night. I am a night writer. the reason is, it allows me to try to write from the cutie mark crusaders age level, and therefore allowing me to write as them.

can't wait to read it. your first one?

Ayup. It will take me some time though; I'm not the fastest typist in the world, and I have this habit of editing as I write. I suppose it would be possible to put up really short chapters, but I've always found that a bit distracting while trying to read.

Take your time. I don't read much when writing stories, so I probably wouldn't get to it until I finished all three of my series anyway. (reason being maintaining my head canon at all times, including temporary head canon for individual stories)

How long is it?/How long will it be?

1152749
Well, right now I'm through the prologue and most of the first two scenes, and 2920 words. My goal in writing this fic is to stay as close to FIM cannon as possible, and get to about a show's worth of dialogue and action. Playing it back in my head, right now I'd be through the intro, and maybe to the second break in the show. I'm unsure as to how I'm going to tie what I have down so far into what I have left to write, so I'd guess I'll be somewhere between 5k and 9k words once I'm done. It all depends on which scenes I decide to use to get where I'm going (I have several rattling around between my ears) and how much filler I decide to cut out once I have everything down.

prepare for incoming questions.
how do you write a story that long? is it going to have multiple chapters, or just one? do you edit everything yourself? do you have an estimated release?

examples from myself:

I write it in multiple stories and series to give readers freedom when reading, as multiple stories happen at the same time. multiple stories one chapter each. I have an editor Cormac McCloppy. a night or two writing plus one day editing, a few weeks total.

The story originally started out as barely enough to be called a one shot; I was just going to do something to give the OC in my avatar a backstory. It didn't feel right as a standalone so I thought about how to flesh the story out. I came up with an intro that I really like, and started looking for ways to connect them. Now I have half a story that (so far) uses the mane six, one background character from the series, and of course my OC. It will probably be split into chapters once I'm done, I just want to make sure that the breaks don't throw people off. So far I've been doing my own editing, mainly because I keep going back and changing things here and there and that would really cheese off someone who's trying to make sure my grammar/spelling/continuity is holding together. At this point I wouldn't mind having someone do a pre-read to make sure the story doesn't suck though. As far as a release date goes, I don't know. :unsuresweetie: I could finish things up over the course of a few days, but I have tons of stuff to get done in the next three weeks and won't have much time for writing. I wrote down what I have so far over the course of five or so hours when I couldn't sleep to make sure my concept didn't decay into garbage. And then there's always my ADOS to contend with.

5 or so hours:pinkiegasp:!? I spend all day creating the concept for the story I am writing that night (while constantly suffering from writer's block), then I spend ranging from 4 to 12 (rough estimate as I can't remember how long I spent on this yesterday. still ongoing as this is my current progress) hours writing the story through deliberately induced mental fog, while searching constantly for inspiration until I find it. Even during this I my writing is start (maybe one line or sentence):pinkiecrazy:, stop:pinkiecrazy::pinkiecrazy:, gain idea, get distracted, go back and write idea while trying to find inspiration, gain inspiration (maybe, if not repeat previous steps:pinkiecrazy::pinkiecrazy:), write until inspiration does not provide an answer, repeat previous steps (until 'gain inspiration', if inspiration helps again use it, if not find additional source::pinkiecrazy::pinkiecrazy::pinkiecrazy::pinkiecrazy::pinkiecrazy:), complete! and trying to make this intertwine with two other series:pinkiecrazy::pinkiecrazy: (Sweetie Belle, and Applebloom) and including the title in the story at least twice:pinkiecrazy::pinkiecrazy:. + adding authors notes with a message special thanks and the title of my next story (not knowing the content of the story and trying to find a title that will fit into the story naturally in multiple places is extremely difficult:pinkiecrazy::pinkiecrazy::pinkiecrazy::pinkiecrazy::pinkiecrazy:).

now that you endured my :pinkiecrazy: rant let me go back to the question I originally wanted to ask. How do you write twice as much as me in so little time?

1154199 Ok, 5 hours has just been my 'pen to paper' time. If I try to tally up the time I've spent conceptualizing and clarifying things in my head... :twilightoops: Most of that has come while I'm at work. I spend twelve hours shifts running a pair of punch press, so unless they're having issues, I have a lot of time on my hands. Typically I just let my mind wander and lately this story has been rattling around a lot. I've had various 'scenes' running through my head for a while, now I'm just tying to meld them together. I used to spend a lot of time doing RPs on IRC chats, which has probably helped me to visualize things I'm writing and reading. I'm also unsure of how good my writing really is, I don't get much of a reaction when I read through it anymore. Granted, I've read it quite a few times now. I read constantly, which probably also helps, my mind is constantly doing the words => pictures thing, so I'd imagine it understands the reverse. Titles though, oof. Such a pain. (Right now my story is simply titled "Quickwrench Who?")

Trying to keep things tied together between several stories is a complete and utter pain, I can sympathize with you there. I've had to deal with that more than once in the past in RPs. Evolution and change can and really have to happen in order to keep things interesting, but you don't want to lose touch with what's gone on in your story so far.

Posted the first bit of it. :yay:
