I should really get around to reading the original story at some point, from what I understand it was one of the ones that ended in transhumanism, which is probably the closest anyone gets to a happy ending in a Lovecraft story (excluding the Dunwich Horror where the good guys are just plain fully successful in killing the monster, but including Sweet Ermengarde which is absolutely not part of any sane discussion about Lovecraft stories beyond a brief mention of its existence)
