It should have been simple to retire. Just put everything down, go on vacation, and watch the daisies grow. However, some people don't seem to take well to handing everything over. Not quite.

Part of Quills and Sofas's fifth flash fiction contest: We Tried, where it advanced one time before being eliminated.

Of course as anypony with actual sense knows, this won't happen. But this was funny. I still don't see Fluttercord as ever being a romance.

Unless Discord or Fluttershy OUTRIGHT SAY IT in the final episode.

Thank you for the complement, but please don't be quite so condescending.

I don't see the Princesses' going into standard or even perminate retirement. Give them 50 or so years of adventuring and they'll show up to give Twilight and chance to take a vacation while they retake the throne. Immortal of not they will live multiple normal life times and want to change things up every so often.

OK. What did you think of the story?

Certainly fun seeing the frost few years of there "hiatus" from the throne :) and yes Twilight has many years before she needs a break from Princessing.

Great story, and I was surprised by the ending.

9823058 I agree. I think that Celestia and Luna can't actually call it a "50-odd year vacation until Twilight's 5 mortal co-rulers die and she needs us back," but that's what it probably is.

A fun little slice of life, and honestly rather realistic. Habits are hard things to break, and most people who retire don't just slam the brakes and stop everything they've been doing for years.

As was said in previous reviews, this was an entertaining one-shot depicting the highlights of the first few years of Celestia and Luna's retirement. I especially liked the nods to the IDW Comics and the clash with the "Catrina cultists needing a virgin sacrifice".

All in all, great mix of humor, reflection and realism (well the last one only going as far as how hard it is to break old habits when you're supposed to be retired).

By the time we’d landed, we noticed something wrong with the stars. Namely, that they weren’t showing up. Luna said that could wait until we got back. I quite reasonably asked if she was sure, she snapped back at me, we… said some things we regretted, and resolved to send a message to Twilight. She said everything was fine, though, and she had a temporary fix in mind. We left it at that.

You do know that Luna never really control the stars at all right? That Fanon thing always bugs me.
