It's a perpetual motion machine in the same way that a spinning disk powered by an electric motor is a perpetual motion machine in our world. It's not a mechanism powered by its own motions; the perpetual motion machine I'm envisioning in the pony world is constantly refreshing itself by pulling magic from Equestria's magic field.
Only the magic of true friendship, like that of Pansy, Clover, and Smart Cookie, can generate more magic than it uses.

Oh definitely. It's just a question of how much, as a being that's the essence of division and chaos, he could possibly have succeeded. Especially since being too orderly and harmonious can make him disappear.
