Alden MacManx

If you're living on borrowed time, do you have to return it?

T

On February 19, 2016, Joe Velloti find himself changed into a red and white pegasus. Deciding he cannot survive in his hometown of Nanuet, New York, when he finds out about Alexandria, he decides to head there. It's a whole new world out there. Can he and others he meet survive in it long enough to join up with others?

A Ponies after People side story, as started by Starscribe.

“On maps, where we are at is called Paris, Illinois. We renamed the city ‘Alexandria’, because of the library of books we have from Equestria. Just what did you do for a living?”

I'm a little surprised Joe didn't catch that and comment on it.

Next? Find a siphon hose and a few fuel cans . Siphon fuel for the genset or for vehicle(s). An auto parts store will be the most likely place to have the right kind of hose.

Never having done that, I didn't think of it...

First, Joe should get his hooves on fire department entry keys that would allow him to enter most businesses and apartment buildings with the front door keys?

Knox Rapid Entry System

For an extended journey, I can see Joe driving a fire department vehicle, while Linz drives a three axle supply truck, a Humvee, or if she learns about dangerous creatures are now about and hunting ponies a M1117 Armored Security Vehicle with a cargo trailer. As the M1117 has a turret that has a .50 caliber machine gun and grenade launcher that firepower would deter almost any antagonist from attempting to harm Joe, Linz, and anypony else that they find on their journey.

When I put myself into this situation, I’d put an armored vehicle with two mounted guns between my little pony body and something that wants to make me their next meal.

Moreover, as I’m the size of a big dog, I’d attempt to raid police stations to get my hooves on some K-9 dog body armor. Beyond that I’d find and then wear some horse saddlebags. And then, I noticed that it is 2:30 AM and time to get some sleep.

Try and find older gas stations with electrical, not electronic gas pumps. They tend to just have a simple motor driven pump, the motor mains supply relay controlled from a button in teh station. Put a generator lead on the motor to spin it, or pull the belt, put a wheel brace on the pump pully and spin it youself? But thats a lot of years ago. 80s at latest?

US vehicles are completely different than UK vehicles, but finidng out what is with those cultists is the main one, because in times of stress, cultists are teh easy way to get numbers, no matter how badly the followers are used or used to abuse.

I can see the main conflict in this story being how to organize their caravan to Alexandria. The team leaders need to determine that each pony will need X amount of food and water each day for X days of travel time, allowing for additional food and water for X number of other returnees that they find on the way to Alexandria.

What vehicles to bring would also be a source of conflict, as some would want civilian vehicles from recreational vehicles, Greyhound buses taken from the Port Authority Bus Terminal or PABT, to stretched limousines or would they choose mostly military vehicles? You could devote an entire chapter having your characters explore the PABT building, to find vehicles and an experienced, returnee bus driver.

What about basic auto mechanic training for the adults? For example, I think that the team leaders would want a flat tire to be changed for a new tire in a fast and efficient manner by any adult in their caravan.

I can imagine that the New York City ponies would ask the residents of Alexandria what they needed, and then attempt to find these things, and then bring those to Alexandria.

If this caravan detours to Chicago to find things that the citizens of Alexandria have requested, they might find a returnee named Roger Chen who is knowledgeable in gardening.

Nice idea, but not the way I'm handling it. Joe and Linz will be the pathfinders on the peregrination, taking as direct a route from NYC to Alexandria as they can, marking and calling in findings. A second team will be in charge of setting up camps and such for the third wave, those who do want to go.

After doing thirty seconds of Internet research, I found out that the population of New York City was 8.582 million in the year 2015. So, assuming that everyone will return within ten thousand years and that the rate of return was steady, I took 8.582 million and then divided by ten thousand years means that about 858 returnees would return each year or about two returnees per day. However, from reading the stories and the comments I think that the rate of return is a right skewed, bell curve meaning that fewer returnees on average would return in the first thousand years after the Event, while the majority of the returnees would return in the last thousand years after the Event. That would explain why there are so few returnees in New York City in your excellent story.

That chapter is a nice way to get this travelogue started. I wonder what or who our protagonists will encounter in Allentown? I suppose that is what Alden MacManx will show us in the next chapter.

Its roughly this point where someone could be having the thought, moving accross country, finding new people occasionally, picking some of them up depending.

Theyre going to need a bigger bus.

Or at least a two axle trailer?

Or are the main and secondary travel groups close enough behind that healthy adults can bunker down and wait, so the only reason theyd end up with a dragon is because of the relative age shift, it would be like young Spike etc?

Will our protagonists be raiding any local gardening stores? One place that I would check for returnees would be the Lehigh Valley International Airport that is 3 miles northeast of Allentown. About one thousand feet from the airport runway is a United States Postal Service distribution center and next door is a US Marine Corps Reserve Center, with many useful vehicles parked outside. Of course there is nothing stopping your characters from attempting to take a classic Cadillac convertible from a city automobile museum.

ROTC Veteran, off his meds and out of his world?

Note he said fresh eggs and roast chicken, and no more eggs.

The rats at least are intelligent enough to get out of the cages, especially with the magic boost.

He has been a Very Hungy Dog. :pinkiesick:

He says he has been up to 3 miles away, but the Wallmart, with all those trollys and trucks etc is less than 2 miles away, and yet has no supplies.

Theyre going to be lucky to wake up in the morning with what he been dosing them with?

One thing I’d ask Pete would be about any powerful storms he’s seen, with enough rainfall to flood the Ohio River banks along with Route 7 on the west side and the twin tunnels of the Wheeling Tunnel on the east side. On Pete’s defense, there have been five recorded floods that have crested at over 50 feet at Wheeling; so that recent flood may have been a natural event.

Statistics about Ohio River Floods at Wheeling

Or, did someone or something temporarily dam the Ohio River south of Wheeling? I just think that there could be a connection between the flood and Pete.

It would be nice if Joe’s Team had a Party Planning Pony who has Chaos Magic similar to Pinkie Pie, Cheese Sandwich, or Discord.

Party Planning Pony says: “Flood? Don’t anyone here worry about any flood. I can handle the flood, no problem!”

The Party Planning Pony is suddenly now wearing Mark VI Mjolnir Powered Assault Armor while holding a M7 Caseless Submachine Gun in each hoof.

Joe is equally stunned, amazed, and frightened at his teammate all at the same time.

I have not seen any Party Planning Ponies in the main or side stories. To correct this injustice against Party Planning Ponies, this story truly needs a returnee who is learning to be a Party Planning Pony!

I'm basing flooding on the Ohio River to be a result of the winter of 2015-2016 (as decided in my headcanon) and no one to take any steps to control it. The Wheeling Tunnel flooding I can explain as nobody being around to run the pumps.

As for parties, well, I don't have any planned, but things will get better. Of course, they have to get worse first...

Joe and friends have now realized just how dangerous the post-Event world can become. Along with more weapons and ammo, Joe could find one or two police and/or fire department drones that have optical and thermal cameras to find any potential allies or enemies before making face-to-face communication.

?Better make plans with teh followup route finders, to treat that guy like what he is, someone who is likely to keep an eye out for them and ambush them within a given area, and send in a group to deal with him.

You peeking at my notes? *chuckles*

My small weekly gaming group just setting up to start palying Cyberpunk 2013 again.

I, have experience of aincient computer technology, from the 80s and 90s, that when it runs on modern hardware, is little faster than modern uber optimised code.

Still. Its faster.:rainbowkiss:

They made it to the centralised location, but that means as Scouts, they can start making their way back, with Artie, so he can set up a series of memory locations, and on reaching the main group, shift any critical persons through and transfer repairs and maintenance supplies accross, so that they dont have to carry as much stuff with them?

With a railroad line connecting Alexandria and Chicago, and about 500 freight trains travelling through Chicago every day; I think that a recovery team should travel to Chicago to see if they can find any useful cargo on the trains that were stopped on the tracks, waiting for other trains to roll through the several bottlenecks that cause trains to take an entire day to move through Chicago.

“The rail lines built more than a century ago were not configured for the volumes and types of freight being carried currently, and Chicago has become the largest U.S. rail freight chokepoint. An average rail car that may take as little as 48 hours to travel the 2,200 miles from Los Angeles to Chicago spends an average of 30 hours traversing the Chicago region. Average speeds of freight trains operating in the region typically range from 5 to 12 miles per hour, depending on the route.”

About CREATE

That means that even if a freight trains derails, the slow speeds in and around Chicago mean that the train’s cargo would not be harmed much, if at all.

Took me long enough to get to this story, but I wanted to take the time and praise the effort you spent in adding some real conflict to one of your stories. An actual villain! For a few chapters, you had some actual tension that genuinely moved me.

Next time, do that, only longer. Keep the villain out there making things difficult for your protagonists for the whole story. That was some of the msot compelling stuff you've written so far, and I look forward to seeing more like it.

Journey complete, life goes on.

But, thats another story.

Is there plans for a sequel?

Eventually. Working on another project now. I'm sure I'll go back to this storyline SOMEtime in the future.

I loved this slice of life story. In addition, I hope someone will make Garry's Mod and Source Filmmaker character models based on your original characters.

The Apples are like Chickenman they're everywhere, they're everywhere

Really hope that Yuri did a good job of planting the good doctor, would not like to see him pop back up.

and we have a new hit story totally awesome.

oh, that made me think of "the dark night strikes again", where Batman tells Luthor that his people had just destroyed Luthor's blackmail files..."and the backup in Allentown, Pennsylvanian, too."

“Omels? What’s an omel?” Joe asked, baffled by the word.

Pete grinned, the first real smile Joe had seen on the Doberman’s face. Even that looked menacing. “Why, a grown-up omelet, of course! I have lots of eggs and some greens I’m sure you would enjoy!”

oh, i've seen a similar joke in a book, "Callahan's key", which is partly about a large group of people moving from New York to Key West, Florida.
they used old school-buses.
