You know, I feel bad for Spike and Twilight. I can empathize with both of them; wanting to be free to do my own thing, and getting irritated when others don't follow my perfectly simple instructions.
I won't say who's at fault here, since I'm a biased party (Twilight is my favorite pony). Besides, as of this moment I'm too lazy to write anymore.

I was studying a mixed igneous-metamorphic outcropping in Lorimer Park, near Fox Chase, PA. There, I found quite a quantity of almandite and spessartine garnet schist as well as some small crystals of black tourmaline. I'm hoping to locate a few little geodites at some point with some clearer samples, maybe including an andradite!

Huh. Given Spike's diet, I figured he'd have picked up a little something about geology...
Brilliant use of Pinkie's past, especially at a point before Twilight learned about it.
And for a moment, every cow on Sweet Apple Acres felt inexplicably nervous.

Thanks for reading! I do have to give Georg his proper due, this story would have been "I hate collecting rocks, the end" without his wonderful additions.
As for Spike's diet, I would bet he doesn't think much about it, kinda like how people tend to not think about where their food comes from. Gems are edible, stones are not. What else matters?
This is why you make sure your assistant is one, paid, and two, actually wants to be there; preferably either a fellow geologist or a geology student/major
