Wasn't sure how everypony would go with verse, but it's my medium.

Happy to take any suggestions for other adaptations or if you would prefer an original story in verse.

In regards to your query, there is intended to be a level of confusion and ambiguity as it is taking place in the dark and they can only rely on sound. And the sudden squelch sound, followed by silence indicates foul play. You'll have to read on to find out the cause and their fates :)
