From all I've read thus far Onyx has mostly been played out as a deranged and merciless pony, but by all accounts he's still very much a tragic villain. This story does well to bring out that sympathetic part of him. Even with all his childhood glee in hurting others, had he been born in a better time, with ponies who care and know better about mental illness, he might could've ended up alright. (Assuming your modern Equestria has up to date mental health care that is)
But he wasn't. And instead of getting help, he went through so much more that convinced that hurting others was fun and right, eventually to the point where there was no way of stopping him, and his lust for violence grew to the point that he committed horrendous crimes that cemented him as someone who was beyond saving or redemption.
That's a truly tragic outcome.

You're one of the few readers to sympathize with him. He gets further exploration in stories 3, 4, and five that you'll no doubt like if you're this interested in the interplay of tragedy and his psyche. If you really enjoy the idea of the 'what if' of someone evil getting helped being pondered, I would recommend the graphic novel My Friend Dahmer. It was written by a high school friend of Jeffery Dahmer in an attempt to make sense of their shared experiences and how the latter grew to be what he was to the rest of the world.
Enemy of Mine is the story that tackles it most, and it's fairly modern. Luna tends to talk about it quite a bit in other areas of stories that heavily feature her too.

Couldn't respond to this one with the others because I had to go out and do somethingI do look forward to seeing more on Onyx, he's certainly a character I'm interested in. Sympathetic or not, darker problems like his don't tend to pop up much in fic as far as I'm aware (Unless it something like Cozy, who's more often than not played out to be sick, twisted, and irredeemable despite the fact she's still a child herself, but that bitterness is beside the point)
I just find it hard to hate a child for struggling with mental health, especially when they're still so young, even if said child takes joy in others' pain. Trying not to ramble on and on about it, but it's something that I'll be thinking about for a while now, anyway.

I was more referring to the fact that the fandom & writers tend to portray her in a more murderous and irredeemable light since she is an entirely blank slate in terms of motive and backstory. Not quite a comparison between the two, just a small complaint on my end.

I was thinking about the in-universe fate of her and fan reactions. It makes sense that the character would act like she can't be redeemed, but to have the writers treat her the same as a vicious, violent succubus and murderously powerful immortal centaur being made zero sense. She's a small, racist child dependent on the corruption and magic of others to gain anything.
Meanwhile, Onyx willingly committed genocide, the little fucker.

Ooooooh. I like this origin story for Sombra. Poor Onyx. He definitely is a combination of bad nature and bad nurture. The addition of the possession, of an older/wiser/stronger entity promising a way to make his madness method turns him from a tragic figure into a monster... but the seeds were always there. Hmm... he reminds me of a certain red-and-black Earth pony OC in another series. Along with the one he ends up serving for a while before getting his vengeance.
I will admit that the references to Star Swirl abusing Onyx took me aback at first, but when I thought about it more, it makes sense in the context of a much older Equestria that had just started coming out of its cold, dark, Wendigo days. Teachers used to regularly beat children in Western schools as recently as the 80's, so imagining an old wizard doing the same to his young ward (who was too curious and interested in the wrong things for his own good) isn't exactly a stretch. Star Swirl is a mostly benevolent figure in the canon, but he made some pretty grave mistakes and ill-fated judgments (Stygian) already, so this isn't too much of a leap.
I know this is tied into your larger stories and universe, but on its own, this is a nice, dark piece about the origins of evil.

Admittedly, a lot of my stories with Sombra haven't been revised from where my writing was prior to 2017 or so. Though, from the comments that I've been getting on them, people still find them enjoyable. Just know that going into them, cause they need the TLC in general + for the printed versions that you (yes, you) could be able to buy with your real, human money.
