This story is a sequel to Crystalline: Her Destiny

Ever scholarly Princess Twilight Sparkle can't wait to finally embark on her own arctic quest with her friends to find evidence of Starswirl the Bearded's life.

But what if things don't go as planned? When Princess Celestia orders a new companion who is a master magic user to accompany Twilight she's thrilled until she finds out on who it might be.

Her fears come to life when it turns out to be none other than Sombra. Will this ambitious Princess and the snarky loner be able to refrain from killing each other? Ancient magic awakens and history becomes vivider and its participants a little too alive as things play out.

Seems interesting. But is there another story I must read to understand how Sombra and Cadance are friends?

Ehat happened i meed to know what happened?!

Don't worry there will be much more! Just have some patience for this author cannot type fast. This is a pre-written story so there will be no hiatuses or cancellations.

Glad you enjoyed!

Normally I put stories on a short probation period before favoriteing. But I just got done with Crystalline and have no doubt this will be awesome!

5925226

Well thank you! Just get a lab coat. Things will be messy.

Is it necessary to read the prequel first? Yes, no, maybe so?

5961813

Yes silly, that is why I have that there. :rainbowwild:

It only takes about an hour to read. Probably less.

This should be featured.

5961974

You mean...T.O.M? :derpyderp1:

You think this should be featured?

Allow me a moment to process this.

Ouch, right in the wing. Quite a tumultuous way to set things in motion, and a good one, too.

It's painfully obvious who it was Twilight was describing in the prologue, so whatever and whomever they end up uncovering in their journeys is sure to be intriguing to say the least.

"Burn you monstrosity! I'll murder your families!"
My stomach felt like it was going to do a flip, for outside burning cacti was...the pony. The very same possibly sadistic pony who ambushed the other bandits.

That's...just golden. Poor cacti.

"You say that like you've killed ponies before, other than those bandits!"

Eh heh-heh.

Sombra (I mean obviously) must have a lot of pent up material he'll need to deal with in the future.

Noticed a little error here:

Sombra rolled his eyes. "Yes, I was going to get to that if you were patient."
"What exactly do-"
"Quiet. Now. I'm talking. How does anypony ever put up with up with you?"
I wonder the same about you.
Better let him blowhard on I guess, though hopefully I can find out what he plans to do with that...potion.

That was probably the tamest hallucination scene I've ever encountered in a story. Don't drink it no matter how good it smells, either.

5999549 The area that was in bold.

How does anypony ever put up with up with you?"

Sombra: stupid purple eyesore
Twilight: stupid evil tyrant
Cadance: stupid unicorn prodigies

Yusss! Plot development, mysteriousness, grumpy Sombra, I love it all! *attempts to hug fic through computer.*

uuuuu, this is geting complicated. I like it.

6100105

Indeed. Just remember not to drink the dish soap.

Either Sombra is just a pragmatist, or he's culturally dead. Suppose becoming an evil shadow king for a portion of your life will have that effect on you.

Friend?! More like fiend!

Man...I am now reminded of the Fiendship is Magic comics...Sombra's issue...what a mixed bag that one was.

As we padded past precious relics, hoof-falls softened by carpet, the grey-eyed mare introduced herself as Studio Art and passed time in the maze of corridors with cheerful banter while I read the detailed plaques, and admired the displays.
I'm not sure if anypony out there could understand how wonderful it was to have a silent Sombra and no longer have to listen to his snark.

I actually have a hunch Sombra's reticence might be because he's from around the time many of the museum's more ancient pieces were originally created, so he already knows of their significance, or lack thereof. I have to give applause for how complex your version of Sombra is in this story arc thus far.

He returned to staring at the murals on the ceiling, with a somewhat distant look in his eyes.

Just a brief description/some details of at least one of these murals could have made this sentence even more significant than it may already be.

"My sword is in your hat."

Magical storage hats for the win! :pinkiehappy:

Apparently, my tundra surroundings had been replaced by a circular gray-walled room with a giant sigil in the middle of the floor on which many fragmented images were layered and distorted by the cosmic snowstorm appearance.
The image varied in aesthetic but all had one similarity. All were maps: topographic, aerial shots, weather reports, groundwater diagrams, and even a complex outline of where Sombra and I had been travelling and a rather kooky looking compass.
Although the room was large it was furnished quite modestly. At the northernmost point (according to the compass) was a large many faceted window and all sorts of pullstrings, astrolabes, clockwork mechanics, levers, and more compasses.

Ah, nice, so the magical hat is a mini-Doctor Who Tardis of sorts. Yeah, mind totally not blown...

"All hail Purple Eyesore, Sovereign Queen of Lack-Wits. Esteemed Lady of I Cannot Distinguish That I Am No Longer In The Trottish Wilds But My Own Dear Hat."
I sighed.
It seemed as if nothing would change.

I quite like this Sombra, I hope he remains this snarky forever, except in certain situations :trollestia:

Okay, now I have caught up again. Another great and interesting read, IceStar. You are masterful in the area of the mysterious. Some others like to have readers wade through showy oceans of exposition (guilty as charged), but at least some of us around here have a good grasp on subtlety.

6107044

Thank you!

Ah, nice, so the magical hat is a mini-Doctor Who Tardis of sorts. Yeah, mind totally not blown...

If I watched Doctor Who I might better understand the comparison here.

6107086 Well the Tardis, while resembling an old blue police call box on the outside, is actually a large pocket dimension room of sorts inside that contains all manner of instruments and technology that can facilitate travel through time and space. Much like your hat concept and that one tent from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire that the Weasleys and such had.

6107093

The only object such as this I am familiar with is the Luggage from Discworld.

6107095 I'm familiar with the Discworld concept, but I've never actually read the Discworld series itself. :twilightoops:

Sombra is the king of Snark! May his reign be long and glorious!

6107103

Then the Luggage will eat you alive. :pinkiehappy:

Oh, and a fun fact about Sombra: is an INTP, on which more info can be found here.

6107107

Neverendingus Snarkicus Legitimate Lantinicus

6107113 Very interesting, although I'm not very well versed in Jungian psychology, or most psychology for that matter. Some portions of that personality/Sombra's personality in this universe seem to have overlap with myself, minus the love/affinity for mathematics and logical systems.

I only like logical systems when convenient, otherwise I leave things to the random. :pinkiehappy:

I just click things on the interweb and watch as all falls to my master plan.

I just read the preceding story and this one and enjoyed every minute of it.

For some reason, everytime 'Magicspire' is mentioned, this pops into my head.

oblivionmodwiki.com/images/8/8f/TES4-Wiztower01.jpg
It's from Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, so I guess that is a good thing. :applejackunsure:

6137360

I didn't name it after that 'cause I didn't know that existed, but man that is cool.

Just reminds me of an old D&D reference I read when I was young. Evil old mage with his young, female apprentices he would teach.

6024127
Even funnier, because the probably-canon comics say that Cadance used to be a pegasus. :rainbowlaugh:

I think that the defining trait of this Sombra is that he is a "lone wolf". He will sooner die then depend on anybody other. Everyone else is either to be used and then thrown back, or is too clever for that and is most likely an enemy.
So he has likely no weaknesses linked to external people(maybe he has a liiiiittle spot for Cadance, through still minding her as one of the his cards) but on reverse he will not work in team.
Reminds me of Raistlin Majere from Dragonlance, but while he had a certain charm and a code of conduct, Sombra looks to have none of it and looks repulsing.

7558744 Thanks for this wonderfully descriptive comment! I hope that you progress with the series and continue to enjoy my stories. And on Sombra's defining trait? Well, his sass isn't something to be ignored...

Don't drink dish soap kids, no matter how pretty it looks. :trollestia:

But
But it's so beautifuuuuull :applecry:

"It's funny how almost everypony thinks you're the smart one when in the end, the beginning, and the middle it remains true that I have all the answers."
Sombra is both Sherlock Holmes...and God...? :rainbowhuh:

Seems about right xD
