The Hand of Pony

If I ever write things with Zecora I WILL make her rhyme even if it kills me.

I haven't read anything yet, but I can't wait to read this.

Stupid sleep getting in the way of reading...

8159347 I am posting this at a stupid time. Literally spent half an hour agonising over it, then hit the submit button and closed the browser so I couldn't chicken out. Updates should be at the usual Sunday time.

Oh I'm enjoying this. I do hope that this time there is a spot for the other girls to tag along. Seriously, I want to see Rarity deal with war. She will either lose it completely or go full on Red Sonja.

8159379 I could say something, but whatever I say is major spoilers, so Imma be all quiet like.

8159399 yeah, looks like I got my wish.

8159375

It's okay.

In other news, good job with Faust's plan. Finally a plan that has the merit of being feasible. And no gloating! Good job on that.

I... kind of expected it when I saw the story's description. :facehoof:

8161249 Dude, that stuff's harder to write than the story itself sometimes. For me anyway.

And it's back. I was a bit disappointed the first few chapters that it looked like you'd be skipping over the mane 6, but then they did the smart thing and fled Faust to warn Equestria. Liking how things are set up and you've even cleared up some of the questions I had from the first story about how powerful Faust is. Looks like a great start.

An aside, is it just me or did the jump from discussing Fausts mind influencing spell redirect into Luna talking about how silly in retrospect wanting to have eternal night was a little to well. Almost like they had a simiar source.

And whatever is in the dreamlands hunting Nightmare... is that Faust or something else?

Can't wait to learn more, already got me hooked.

Edit: You know, I thought the griffins would be the problem. Nice red herring.

8161327 I remember you saying something about the griffons being the main antagonists sometime during freemare, and I was all like cdn.meme.am/instances/500x/61286966.jpg

God damn I want to spill all my spoilers in these situations, but I shall not succumb.

8161641
The one thing I like more than my predictions being right is being surprised. At least in reading fiction.:raritywink:

You gave us a piece of information that is too good not to know of.

You mentioned a Tree of life, aka, something STRONGER than the tree of harmony. Something tells me that this is the key to her story :yay:

8176376 Did I also mention it's dead? Pretty sure I did.

Seriously though, super excited about this story. Can't wait to see where this all goes :yay:

So Bookhorse's job is to Bookhorse. Gotta agree that is us up her alley more than leading an insurgency. A bit lonely of a start with just Trixie, and I'm worried since only Twilight is tagged something might happen.
Anyway, GO SOLVE THE MYSTERY TWILIGHT! You can do it!

8180142 Okay, so the tagging thing is more to do with the fact that you only have 5 tags, and since I'm splitting to story up in several directions, I'm having to be much more frugal with who gets tagged. Now if we could have around 20 tags, life would be good.

derpicdn.net/img/2014/12/22/790050/small.gif

I'm almost willing to be money that the filly sneaks away either off to Twilight once her journey begins and they can't send her back, or off to war. I do hope that we get to see what the rest of the band of sisters get up to while Twilight's off adventuring, but that might be covered under you splitting this in several directions.

So, Canterlot decided to form a civint agency. Good on them. Based on available information, they're going to be humint primarily and based on their guard roots, they'll probably have an armed paramilitary unit. Luna should probably also get on forming a comint group, either a separate agency, or one within the Equis.

Only issue I see is Celestia is leaving the girls in Faust's hooves. Faust who we know isn't above torturing pony's for info. Discord though suprised me. By definition he should be able to find and snarch the girls away without confronting Faust at all.

Nice, funny chapter.

As for the question, probably saving her adoptive world around three... times... You're right... By now, Sunset should definitely be an alicorn... How strange...

Sunset becoming a Alicorn will happen only when Celestia is there with a song on her lips and Subsets life scrolling by on screens like Celestia is spying on her like it's the Truman show.

8196391 I was going to point at Cadence and say that wasn't necessarily true, but then I looked it up and Celestia was there for that too. However, I would point out the similarities in appearance between the spell cast by Twilight before she got transported to the realm of sparkles and secret cameras, and the bit in friendship games where Sunset becomes magical girl Sunny. If she'd done that in horseland I bet she'd now possible be a fully bewinged princess of running away from your problems in other dimensions.

8196452 I like that. Princess of running away from your problems in another dimension. Has a nice ring to it. And we all know Celestia is really Princess of the voyeur's!

8196452

fully bewinged princess of running away from your problems in other dimensions.

Hey, that's my job. Damned Hasbro outsourcing to other dimensions.

I like this. I like it a lot. Seriously, give me more... please... pretty please... with a cherry on top... and sprinkles... and candy... and sugar... and stuff, I dunno, do I look like I know things?

Welp. There goes Equestria's allies, and the griffons...

Luna should call the Wonderbolts going on the spying/sabotaging mission the Shadowbolts, because black ops and stuff...

Hmmm! Reminds me of an episode of DS9.

Actually what I want to see is the Crystal Emoire digging up some of Sombra's suits of armor. Show the pony's of Mareitonia war with terror as a component. Might be interesting if Shining Armor came to the fight wearing Sombra's old armor as well.

Another thing to note might be the status of the kidnapped girls and dragon. For one Faust as we have seen feels nothing if she has to torture a pony. And the treatment of Fluttershy may be a bit...extreme, I could see her being given to the Viscount for his amusement. Rarity may most likely be dehorned and jailed while Applejack would be put under mind control as the irony of having Applejack fighting for Mareitania may tickle Faust's humor.

Spike though, Faust may try to do something with the lad. Like grow him to full size and use him like a tank. An out of control one.

Nice chapter. Loved the interaction between Lightning and Dash, as well as the interactions between Spitfire and the rest.

Having gone through military training, including last-minute "here's how not to mess up" pre deployment stuff this whole chapter was win. Wonderbolts are basically at Semper Gumby (always flexible) trying to prep for war. Great chapter, happy to see we'll get a more ensemble narration with Princess Books, Crash and whomever else.

I have no idea why I turned this chapter into a giant training montage. No idea at all. Pretty sure I was going for something else entirely. Oh well.

Ah, don't be so down on what you've produced. The only thing that's a bit jarring (which is not to say bad, just noticeably different) is how quickly Rainbow came around with respect to Lightning. You've done similar things before in this saga, and it's always taken much, much longer.

8225983 I'd say that in the canon of this story it's been roughly 2 and a half years since the Wonderbolts academy episode. Plenty of time for Lightning to have dragged herself out of the gutter rather than have someone do it for her. Now we just need an episode with her just to prove how wrong I am in that assumption, because nopony in Equestria is capable of learning their own lessons.

8225906 If you can say that, I must be doing alright since I have no military experience, or background at all, and tend to shirk researching this kind of stuff.

8226270 It's probably because I wasn't clear enough that this didn't come through, but I wasn't talking about Lightning's attitude shift. Good on her. I was talking specifically about how quickly Rainbow came around to giving her a second chance. In the space of a chapter. That's something I would expect from Friendship is Magic, but I've come to expect suspicions, resentments, and hangups festering in this series of stories, and being resolved in big dramatic set pieces.

Let me say again that this isn't a bad choice. If anything, it's a refreshing contrast, but it is a contrast, and a sharp one.

8226319 I see. In that case all I can say is it's Rainbow Dash, and therefore, gotta go fast!

8226270
I think of the Wonderbolts as being an echelons-above-reality unit, the traditional yelling and strict limits on socializing between ranks are not their thing. A long history of stunt flying probably does that too. You pass selection and you get treated like a big boy or girl. Considering Wonderbolt may be sent out in very small groups they have to be able to practice initiative. One story I remember was an officer in Iraq who was being yelled at by his boss for not chasing insurgents. In garrison stateside he'd have to ask permission to tell his troops to put on raingear, he hadn't thought he could cease mission to chase fleeing guys. Anyway, I can believe Wonderbolt would act this way.

I'm kinda excited to see the intelligence service in action... hint-hint.
On another note, kinda a stupid thing to do by releasing the reservists who didn't immediately volunteer - some have other commitments, like jobs and families (your spouse might want to talk it over you before you go getting yourself involved in a deployment)... not to mention that some of them may have used their positions within the reserves to get other government jobs. Which is to say that it's entirely possible that some of the intelligence service, or other critical functions, have reservists, now ex-reservists within their ranks. Basically, being punished for honouring their true commitments (once the war ends, I assume that they're not going to be reinstated into the ranks).

8229244
I was more trying to go for them wanting ponies dedicated to defending Equestria, and that wouldn't flake out at the first sign of things getting heavy, (which they inevitably will.) You probably nailed it on the commitments thing, but I'm allergic to both responsibility and commitment, so it never occurred to me.

8229341
I know of a reserve officer who works full time as a lawyer. So, unless there was a really good reason, for them to drop everything and run would actually be illegal as per their oaths and whatnot for the barristers association. Others are university students, some who are getting PhDs. There's one that I've hears of, who is a surgeon at a major hospital, but also a reservist, so for him to cut and run would kinda place lives at risk. A lot of them have family, etc. So, you can't really just expect everyone to just jump on to a ship when there's no reasonable expectation for them to do so.
As for it never occurring to you... I guess it never occurred to Spitfire either... could always have law suits and whatnot by some of them members who want to know, "What the f***, I signed up with the understanding that this wasn't a full-time commitment and now I've been kicked out for actually honouring my full-time commitments," or at least someone brings that up to Spits/one of the princesses. 'cause there were probably a few that would have volunteered, if only they had a little time to talk it over with their spouses.

Honestly I enjoyed this. I have a feeling you will make Lightning Dust a integral part of the story here on out.

8238710
She deserves her chance, if the show would ever give it to her.

8240512
I read that the reason she hasn't shown up again was as simple as the voice actress isn't available.

8242446
It was barely 14 C less than a week ago, which is what makes this so unbearable. This is supposed to be the land of rain and no summers. What the hell is this crap?

Not sure what to do with Equis, because the intelligence side of things is the part I could easily get wrong, seeing as I know very little about how rl intelligence agencies really work, which I suspect is something they like to maintain.

I love how everyone assumes the Filly is Fleur daughter now. She really should get her out of Canterlot though, send her to school in I don't know...Ponyville? I could see the Filly being good friends with the CMC's. They might even make a balefire bomb in the clubhouse.

8242577
But mind control's already a thing in pony land, so... not sure what benefit there would be to researching it here.

8243554
8242591
I could totally see the balefire bomb being a result of trying to make instant toast though.

8243716 ah, but if you can't bring the Filly to Ponyville, you can bring the CMC's to Canterlot! I can easily see Applebloom and Sweetie Belle showing up in day out and demandung answers from Celest is on where there sisters are. And getting passed off to Fleur to answer there questions.

8243903
Sweetie saw Rarity and Spike being kidnapped, and Applebloom the same with Aj, with an extra helping of Big Mac getting stabbed. Then the possibility of war is announced right after their reasonably important sisters are kidnapped. I think they're more than old enough, and smart enough, to join the dots. The trick is to stop them doing something stupid.

8254032
Glad you like it. At the very least I can say the grammar should be better in this one. :pinkiehappy:

Nice chapter. I rather liked the end of it. Quite... Ironic...
