That... was a little disappointing to me. Between the title of both the story and chapter, and the description, I was expecting that it was going to be a story where somepony else was responsible for the crime. Not "oh, it was a convoluted misunderstanding."

A bit, yeah. If the case was too obvious in the show, the story throws in a twist that's impossible to guess and dismisses a major clue with something also impossible to guess. Not sure if that's truly an improvement. What I am wondering is whether Wind Rider is still an asshole for letting an increasingly panicking Rainbow Dash think she's about to have her dreams crushed just to amuse himself.
