I don't read them anymore, and don't usually regard them as a source of canon.
That aside, this isn't a jackalope, it just looks like one. Not that it matters much. It's a thing that's fuzzy and big and gives equally big hugs to any pony (un)lucky to be its target for the moment.

I'm not that bad, I mean... uhI'm more a fan of the abridged series(es) myself. I think I've mentioned this before, but I've only watched a handful of cannon episodes more than once. Not to mention, I put off watching as long as possible before I binge watch it in torturous blind reaction blocks whenever possible. In my opinion MLPFIM is as bad as the babysitters club disney version I only saw two episodes of, and my only interest in watching has more to do with morbid curiosity and a test of strength.

If MLP:FiM were starting today, there would not be the huge swell of "ironic to sincere" 4chan users who watched the first episode expecting really treacly glurge like G3 was.
I personally blind reacted to episode one with "I'm going to despise that pink... thing..."
And now, years later, I adore Pinkie... so yeah. Perfect storm for the fandom to take off versus "Oh God, what are *they* going to ruin now?" Tribalism between demographics.

7680066 I remember a bit of story\short story that I heard of more than a few years ago, goes SOMETHING like this:
Space explorer\First Contact guy ended coming across a unknown animal on some planet. Couldn't figure much out about it besides it was not a danger to anyone, because of skin and body makeup. So the guy ended up giving the critter to his 10ish or so boy.
Some years later a armada shows up and proceeds on its way through human space, all but ignoring the best weapons and what ever else the human fleet could come up with.
The alien fleet finds and parks itself around the planet the boy has made a life for himself, his family and the pet on.
Rest of the story cut out, the fleet left without the PRINCESS because she liked living with her pet and its family.
