Starlight Glimmer may hve been the most successful villain to date.
She crushed Twilight's spirit. Okay. Lots of villains did that. Or four others. Maybe five?
She conquered a town. For a longer time than any other villain VS Mane 6. Discord no count. He's immortal. Is Chrysalis immortal? Not sure about that. And Tirek was more of a BURN BABY BURN!
She destroyed Equestria. Five times. By accident.
SUCK ON THAT OTHER VILLAINS!
And her backstor was kind of weak, but her motiation was hella strong!
Enough to destroy Equestria five times. By accident. Just repeating that to make sure.
And her redemption was kind of sped up, but SHE IS CUTE!
STARLIGHT!
Even the ship between her and Twily is her name!

This feels like it fits between Twilight and Starlight returning and the end scene with the song. Which would make Starlight's sudden change in attitude more believable.

I do like this interpretation, but mine is more along the lines when Zuko left his Uncle and went on his path in Zuko Alone (Avatar: The Last Airbender). If Starlight's remediation was like that, I would have loved her as character,but no let's half-ass it into 10 minute scene with a song. Sorry, back to the point, this very well done, even tough I dont accept this story into my personal headcanon, its well written and well thought of .

This is worlds better than the canon ending.
It certainly adds dimensions to the canon ending, and is a nice short read to boot.
Mind you, knowing this show, come season 6 all the vagueness of the 5 finale will probably be addressed anyway.

This is what I call good villain writing, making them not always be villainous in some lights. In a sense, Starlight is an anti-heroine, though one on the very edge of the black and white spectrum of right and wrong.

How do you do that thing you did at the end with your author notes?
This fic was ok, I liked it in general, mild feels were had (even if Spike wasn't canon). However, I still think Starlight Glimmer and her motivations are bullshit, she is a huge pansy, a huge magically super-powered pansy; oh boo-hoo my friend was mean to me that one time and I did nothing about it except mope and try to plunge the world into a magically enforced marxist dystopia devoid of motivation and hope.
...right in the feels.

I really enjoyed this story and your musings afterward. This is pretty much my understanding of Starlight as well.
But seriously, she's probably the most powerful unicorn Equestria has ever seen (since even an **alicorn** couldn't defeat her). She needs to be in someone's watch for quite a while (I suggest Discord).
God damn I hate Starlight's shit-eating grin...
I think I'll kill her in an animation or a story.

Either way, I'm glad to see a fic that presents the finale as a little "incomplete" without going to an angry extreme.
This is a good story, I just have one nitpick. The story canon says it's only been a year and few days, not 5 years.
This could practically be the Season 6 opening sequence.

Otherwise, it's an enjoyable read, and the only of the 'headcanons' I'd even disagree with would be the part about using time-travel to get back her village; I felt like she was pretty blatant about doing it to hurt Twilight.
She didn't mean to cause an Equestria-wide catastrophy, no, but she fully intended to break up their friendship - in terms of evil, it's about at the level of someone spreading nasty rumors about an ex-friend (or ex-lover, for that matter), which isn't exactly unheard of, it's just that she's got a better chance at it actually working.
And yeah, I definitively agree it's always seemed like she thought she was doing the right thing; She's a philosophical extremist (it's not exactly a political view, but it's certainly not religious, so I'm calling it a philosophical view) who probably only started with the marching-in-line iron-fisted control over 'her' village after having some trouble doing it peacefully (besides, she's got nothing on a certain infamous real-life 'religion'-slash-cult and their treatment of new recruits)
Heck, personally, I kind of agree with her; Cutie marks are not a good thing!
I could go on an entire rant about it, but short version; It encourages ponies to rely on their natural talent to make a living, while society would benefit more long-term from the talents being more-or-less the same and the ponies relying on interests and education to distinguish themselves.
But, Cute Marks are a 'comforting' thought, even if they're not helping, so I don't mind them being a part of the show - I just mean, while so many commentators and such seem to be going 'boo, you're insane, go die in a fire!', I'd be going 'Look, you've got some great ideas here, I definitively want to help you achieve some of these plans, but maybe we should tone things down a bit? And find a way to make ponies average rather than terrible?'
Anyway, yeah, good story.
And I'm hoping the actual show-writers do something at least as good with her; I definitively agree with you that her reformation is entirely plausible.
Well, IRL it'd never work because it's just too uncomfortable to admit your entire moral view is skewed; Two people with radically different views could calmly and rationally discuss their views, and still have neither of them ever budge (even though, logically speaking, at least one, and possibly both, would have the 'wrong' view)
But this is Equestria, and ya gotta keep in mind pony-psychology does seem slightly different to humans: Maybe they just don't have as strong a 'cognitive dissonance' phenomena.
So, really, all she needs is for someone to explain why extremism, as a rule of thumb, is a bad thing, and guide her towards more productive ways to encourage equality (like encouraging a broad understanding of subjects outside of your special talent)
