Nice reference Somber and great work as always! I think Scotch Tape is closer to Blackjack as she thinks, trying to help where she can. For some reason, I can't help but think that Scotch sees Blackjack as substitute mother sometimes and Blackjack her as daughter. Anyway, get some rest, you earned it!
Charity! Be nice! It's more like three-quarters.
You're just friendly fire?
A grenade?
I really, really, hate the wastelands.
Not too happy about the laying part? Not sure I blame them, feline anatomy doesn't seem built for it ...
With a name like that, no wonder he ran.
Imagine how ashamed the spirit would be if she'd just popped the lock open with a soda can.
I forsee someone else falling in love with Skylord first, and the struggle to get him to reciprocate.
Missing quote marks before Now
Did she?
That's never a good phrase. Right up there below "Hold my beer."
I think she's Discord's favorite.
Hahaha - oh wait, you're serious. Has this zebra never heard of Blackjack? She'd know the only people who suffer more then BJ's enemies are her friends, and surely the same applies to Scotch!
Stuck in a fish tank, or as a fish tank?
Including this one, and that makes me think Xara will be a recurring fremeny.
The power of plot compelled him?
You say that like it's a bad thing!
Lets see... You got the hero screw up that somehow always 'wins' and 'survives' the encounters, sometimes by impossible means. She is hurt far more physically and mentally than her friends, might even need replacement parts in the future. She's got the love interest no one knows is the love interest yet, always getting pulled into a scheme and disrupting it without meaning to. Has an undead ghost named dealer riding along and shuffling cards when things get interesting. Has a love for sex, so much that it might be unhealthy.
This is all off the top of my head, and describes both Blackjack AND Scotch Tape. So how is this not Horizons yet?
"“Unfortunately, he said take ‘them’, not ‘him’, which means we’re next!”"
Who says this, and what do they mean? Am I misreading, or has it not, at this point, been agreed to only hand Skylord over unless Skylord runs or kills any of the villagers?
"so impossibly big than the chances"
"big that the"?
"Funny how just deep breathing make her chest burn all on its own"
"made her chest burn"?
"So she’s stuck a fish tank till… till she gets better."
"stuck in a fish tank"?
"injected him in the neck, and focused on keeping him alive"
"injected himself in the neck, and focused on keeping himself alive"?
Good luck with the moving and job search!
Wheeeeeeew... well then, that was interesting, very interesting.
And not Horizons? Like... word count? Or content Either way, I'm fine with this, PH was a trip.
Good show
I believe we found Discord new chosen proxy with all the random event that happens to scotch, or she has the wild wasteland perk.
HIROTO NNNOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Oh man, not the big doofy guy. The big doofy guy is never supposed to die well... atleast everyone else got out and Scotch did something cool and shamany. Loved the chapter once again Somber. Just convinced one of my friends to read the original and he's drooling over your work there. Cant wait for the next chapter!
If that's a self deprecating crack at length, we should be so lucky. It's a great story with an interesting, wide world to explore, definitely going to read each chapter as it comes out, only the wait is hard, not having more to read. See jokes about PH and word count, but never understood them. More to read is good! I look at these more like serial stories / comics, there are tools and advantages to really long stories, the big thing that makes them work is good characters and caring about them / wanting to explore them fully, which this has in spades.
By all means, turn into another PH if that's where the story goes.
I always look forward to every new word of this story. Makes me want to reread PH again while I wait.
Awesome chapter, also what happened to that one zebra colt that fell into the river, also a lot of places are hiring where I live.
I find Scotch's continuing and growing(?) struggle regarding the memory and choices of Blackjack pretty darn enthralling. Being still young, it really reads as an engaging expression of how Scotch Tape is trying to identify herself; and the shaman stuff she is able to pull off is very cool to see too. She must be especially awesome to make a giant bag of chips (considering the size of a pony's head compared to the rest of their body) work as a mask!
It was startling that Riptide lost so much of her composure but also neat to see her show up despite the censure consequences. I guess I had erroneously assumed that she couldn't have been that close to her daughter if she had let her be tied to a shark spirit.
Although I wasn't sure and had to look it up, 'Xara' did sound familiar, and I wondered, when Scotch first heard Xara introduce herself, why the pony didn't ask herself for a moment if that zebra was Xarius' daughter- but i guess the situation might have been dire enough to not have thought of it..
8338615 ...You got me there, you did.
I need more...I neeeeeeeeeeed it!
Wait? I thought Riptides daughter more like a merpony the last time we saw her at the bridge? Of course, that probably doesn't change the severity of the physical changes seeing as she still needed water to breath.
Who ever this Shaman leading this secret legion is, they certainly are motivated to kill Scotch Tape. Not to mention spiteful with an ego to boot. It probably says a lot that not all their underlings trust her. (Though I suppose that weird shaman that attacked the caravan could have been Riptide... Though I didn't think Riptide was the Shaman type.)
The hints at a potential Scotch and Pythia ship are wonderful, and I really hope their relationship blossoms and doesn't end in horrific tragedy.
"with luck this won't turn into horizons" I really am hoping it does. Horizons was an epic journey. Keep up the great work Somber!
Oooh. Ears open, Zencori -- this is a Story in progress.
Yeah, that's ponies for ya. Somehow, it's usually both and neither.
...okay, yeah, I might call myself "Skylord" too.
I keep wondering if this is Wasteland's whole thing of perpetuating the suffering, or if this is something else's work. (I believe in luck in the sense that random chance sometimes comes up favorably, but not THIS much luck.)
I'm really enjoying this whole thing of disarming the bombs with improvised tools.
I'm kinda involuntarily picturing some fish-themed version of Tank Deus, here...
Oh... ohhhh. Hi. I've heard of you.
I doubt that Xara is an idealist, but it sounds like she might be the part of this leadership that believes they're doing the wrong things for the right reason. That might make her another Red Eye or Amadi, but I sense that she's at least the sort who sees violence as a waste of effort and resources. Unlike Haimon or Riptide, I might be able to work with this one.
I was caught
In the middle of a railroad track
THUN-DER!
I looked 'round
And I knew there was no turning back
THUN-DER!
My mind raced
And I thought, what could I do?
THUN-DER!
And I knew
There was no help, no help from you
THUN-DER!
Sound of the drums
Beating in my heart
The thunder of guns
Tore me apart
You've been...
THUNDERSTRUCK!
Ohhh... that's... huh. Okay, I'm going to be looking out for Ixion (if that's really its name, and not, oh, say Eskare) to recognize Pythia as Tanit.
(By the way, that should be a question mark after "Tanit".)
So now I'm wondering if there would happen to be exactly 11 megaspell monsters wandering around. Or 10, if the Tempest that Rainbow Dash killed was one of them...
Heh. I like having Charity here to drag everyone back when they get a little TOO wrapped up in the spirit realm.
Write down the date, folks, I think this is the first time Pythia hasn't been abrasive or sarcastic!
:3
Every commander's dilemma. You have to care for your people, but not fear for them. You have to allow for people to make their own choices, and sometimes those choices are that the mission is more important than their life. And sometimes that's not a bad choice to make.
Fuck you, Wasteland.
8347528
I'll note that she ALREADY got replacement lungs.
8350776
Eh, it's his 'Hodor' moment. Big doofy guys have a history of making heroic sacrifices when it's most needed.
just a note I am perfectly OK with this being a 1.5 million+ word work of fiction I love long one especially ones that are well written and your are very well written
8390130
Yeah, I don't know how much better could have been expected for that guy.
8381015
*cough, cough* Glory *cough, cough*
When will this be finished!
It's been over a month Somber, when's the next chapter coming out?
8426828
Crap. Sorry. I forgot. Between failing to find a job and my brain issues, it just sort of slipped my mind. Sorry. I'll put it on fimfic right away.
8428190
It's all good bro, I didn't mean to sound rude. I was just curious. Please take your time, we the fans don't want to put you in a stressful spot. Good luck man, I really hope you find a job and stuff :)
Despite coming out of the mammal_end< gryphons lay eggs. I wonder whether they lactate or eat regurgitated food like birds.
Finally got to read this chapter and I was NOT disappointed! Excellent work, Somber!
Aaaaah~ clever girl!
Careful there, you're starting to sound like a parrot.
What is it about females in fallout and raping?
It's always rape+murder.
Isn't there ever a car where the fame rapes the dude?
I mean...even for the sinful fallout world, that's rather sexist.
No offense to any writers, of course, I'm just making an observation.
...wow.
I was...expecting an entirely different kind of meeting.
Isn't this, like, one of the main antagonists of the whole story?
antoclimatic.
Phew! All the baddies in one place, and they STILL failed to contain her.
Well, at least now we know who is really driving the plot here.
The Shaman.
So mething tells me there is an epic battle involving spirits in the future.
most likely this Shaman is also a cause for the Eye of The World's problems.
I hope this turns into another Horizons. I love reading your work and if this story grows massive it just means I can read more of it!
...
She's not wrong. The Shaman probably saw a vision of Scotch defeating them, and so had them all attack her the moment she arrived, leading to the very future he'd tried to prevent, while if he'd left well enough alone none of this would have happened.
They've fallen for a predestination paradox.
Lengthwise, by all means make this a PH. Just please, please, please, please, up the quality of grammar and punctuation. That goes for your helpers too, especially them. It sucks getting a nice moment or good action going like a steady marathon just to be tripped up by some obscenely misplaced word.

Same here!
Scotch, you’re a good pony and I like you for that, but sometimes I wish you wouldn’t try to trade your life for your friends at every opportunity. Yes Skylord is your friend and it’s very noble that you want to help him, but you actually should’ve come up with a better plan than voluntary becoming a prisoner and then just improvising. For example, you could've left the town with your friends and then plan to ambush Skylord's prison transport. Your “plan”’ only worked because you’re incredibly lucky. Seriously, her Luck stat must be 11.
It’s a good thing her enemies don’t know about this. Otherwise all they need to do is imprisoning a few random bystanders they don’t like and then make a public radio announcement that they’re going to be executed unless Scotch Tape turns herself in within in the next few days.
Still, characters without flaws are boring. And Scotch’s eagerness to martyr herself for her friends is an interesting flaw. Hopefully part of her character development, will be realizing that it’s not always the best course of action.
For a long time, I was also worried about Skylord’s past. Part of my assumed that he had done some really screwed-up things like committing rape or butchering innocent. Aft all he’s part of the Iron Legion and one of the first thing we saw them doing was raping and eating their enemies. I’m glad that this was not the case and Skylord is actually a decent griffon. And after seeing how the other members of his Talon threatened him, his comments about griffons being jerks make a lot more sense.
Xara you’re my favorite villain now! She probably the one with the most corpses in her closet – it’s always the “reasonable” ones who turn out to have the least scruples about murdering others – but you’ve taken the words out of my mouth.
This is turning into a self-fulfilling prophecy. If I was in here hooves I would probably’ve done the same. Find out what Scotch wants, help her accomplish that goal and the part away amicable. Because if you try to kill her, chances are good that you’re only losing more of your resources.
That said, Riptide has a point, too. If they had simply let her kill Scotch right here their problems would be over, too.
As I almost expected, Riptide now blames Scotch for her daughter’s condition getting worse. Which wouldn’t have happened, if she hadn’t tried to kill Scotch. Which is another argument in favor of Xara's approach.
And just when I complained about the Dealer being absent, he returns. Still a jerk but he hasn’t done anything malicious yet. I wonder if he’s just watching Scotch for his own enjoyment or if he has plans with her.

Yea,,. Also rapping males is more painful for that said male
I don't like what you are doing with characters like Xarius and the Hiroto embodier. A simple character that is there for some time, then dies. Because it's just easier. So there is no plot hole in that character's sudden help in the future and it lowers the book's character amount. The only working part in this is Scotch blaming herself for it, other than that it feels meh
Pretty big deal for a griffon to be breaking contract like that, gawd would break their necks. Granted by the sounds of it their people will be content with having the missing fledgling back to try and "fix"
I have no clue of that's actually the dealer, or if it's a hallucination of Scotches but the fact I don't know is super intriguing, and just makes me curious about it.
I love Xara, and I can't help but wonder where the fic would have gone if Scotch had ended up joining them.
Scotch's gambit was equally stupid and brilliant. I took a short break between chapters, and was wondering how the fuck this solution could possibly be resolved without someone getting horribly hurt.
I do wonder how much of Scotch's similarity to BJ comes from in-universe reasons, and how much of it comes from the fact that it makes for a better story.
Also, while I don't take back my comment about Skylord's stupidity, I've grown considerably more fond of him. What can I say, I love angsty characters.
Though I can't say I'm fond of introducing character backstory right before it becomes relevant.
