Well from my experiences in college, we were required some materials like a couple of books for reading, a spiral bound note book, pens and pencils, and at least three or four e-mails from fellow students, in case you missed a class.
My previous English class was horror based so we had to read 'Dracula', 'Frankenstein', and 'Dr. Jykell & Mr. Hyde'. and the teacher would assign us to write a topic about the book, and occasionally ask us to write our own quick story's. After writing our quick story's, we'd end giving everyone in class including the teacher a copy of our quick story and the students would read out their story's out loud to the class, while the students wrote correction on the copy's and hand back the copy's to the students who wrote the story's.
