If you don't want to use the characters' names, stick to at least one other term of reference for them. All this "young teenager", "fashionista," "seamstress", "young adult", etc, sticks out after a while and good prose should be seamless.

Also, "Britches" Doesn't Really sound like something Rarity would say. Seems more like an AJ word.

And why would Rarity be confused that Twilight wants to show off her new look? (Which in itself seems a little odd for her but meh. Whatever). I mean Rarity of all characters would be the one MOST understanding of wanting to show off a new look.
