    Interviewed on Pony Public Library

I was interviewed by the Pony Public Library!  PPL is a new podcast type thingy. I think I sounded a bit awkward to begin with, you can probably tell it was my first podcast.

Anyway, go and give it a listen - it features a live reading (with annotations...) of Scootaloo in Cloudsdale and other discussions afterwards.

The more eagle-eyed among you will have spotted that I have posted Icarus. Or, to be more specific, re-posted it.

I'm afraid the reposted version is not edited from when I originally retracted it for editing.  But I can explain.

Essentially, I started to get ideas for Icarus - big ideas, enormous ideas. I wanted to split it into three books, and make it considerably more epic and huge in scope.  I had some ideas that really gripped me - dreaming up ideas for a story is the best bit, until you actually have to stitch them together and try to make them work!

But then it started to expand a bit beyond the scope of a usual My Little Pony fanfiction. I started to wonder if I should really be putting so much effort into something that in the end I'd only be able to show to you guys - and while I really do love every single one of you, the sort of scope of story I was thinking of was something I'd want to show my family, and my old school teachers and university professors.  This particular comment by Inky Swirl on one of my stories caught my eye:

"Just make sure that the ponies don't get all your creative attention... The human world needs a writer like you."

This is incredibly flattering, and I'm not sure how true it is, but it did get me thinking a bit. So, I'm afraid I decided not to rewrite Icarus, even though I had made several attempts at it and fairly thoroughly planned out a new path for it. I want to direct my main writing efforts, when my exams are over, to an actual real-life original story, that will draw on a lot of the ideas I had for Icarus. I've re-uploaded Icarus, because I put an awful lot of effort and soul into it, and even if I'm not going to rework it I still want people to see it in its original version. Some people might like it.  But, nonetheless, I do apologise. I am sorry for promising big things for Icarus, and then going back on them. I feel that I've let down those who were looking forward to the new Icarus (which in reality is probably about three people...) and I am sorry for that.

I know that there are enormous MLP fanfictions out there, and many of them are fabulously well written, too.  I think that is a brilliant thing.  But it's my choice whether or not I utilise my creativity to write a longer fanfiction, and in the end I decided that I didn't want to.

Don't worry about cancelling that "watch" button, by the way - I am still definitely going to continue writing short little pony stories. I find it huge fun and it's good exercise for my creativity - currently I am considering a "Ponies Discover Red Wine; What Happened Next" sequel story, based off an idea and some discussions I'm going to have with a friend. I'm just not going to be writing any longer pony stories.

    Discussion: "Belmont"

The word "Belmont" occurred to me as a word that had great potential. As it happens, it's the name of an area local to me - Belmont road, Belmont church, Belmont avenue, all that.  But it seems like a very cool word to use in a story.

I can't decide what it might be, though. So I want to know what you guys think!  If you came across a story that was just called "Belmont" ... what do you think it would be about? Is Belmont a villain? Is it a magical place? Is it a spell Twilight has discovered? Is it a new type of martial arts? Is it a psychological complex? Is it a type of bell (in which case we would spell it "Bellmont")?

This isn't really me cheating and fishing for ideas, I just wanted to open it up to discussion to see what you guys thought. So... who or what is "Belmont"?

    Writing, Icarus, etcetera

    Much-loved ponies,

Things haven't quite gone to plan. I had intended to use the break over Easter to get well and truly buried in Icarus and rewrite it - I have pages and pages of notes for new big ideas and where I wanted to take it. But then things happened in real life, and without boring you about my troubles, some things that I cared a lot about fell apart. Far from being able to flee into my creative conscious, I found myself completely locked out of it. I was stuck under one massive ACME writer's block for the whole break.

Things have been looking up recently, and I've just got to the stage where I feel I want to start work on it again - but now I have essays to write for university! Believe me, I'd far rather write about Rainbow Dash and her newfound (spoilers! Hush, Tamar!) than Rousseau, but that's how it is.

So, I'm better now, and I'm ready to start work again on Icarus, which I really do want to get right. But it's gonna be a while before it comes. Sorry about that.

On a side-note, at a recent meet I ran into a brony who actually knew my writing - Absentia, you legend! - which makes things a lot more real, which is cool.

    As ever, your faithful student,

PS - Thanks to everypony who said they liked Icarus how it was. Rest assured that if you liked it then ... well. Just you wait!

Young Shining Dawn is very excited when she hears that Princess Celestia is coming to visit Ponyville. But for Sweetie Belle, her grandmother, the visit carries much deeper significance, especially when she learns that her old friends Scootaloo and Applebloom are also coming, and that the Princess is here on a very special visit for Grandmother Twilight.

I rewrote some bits of the story, and then when I tried to update the chapter here on fimfiction everything stopped working oh god why and I was already stressed because of university work and it wasn't working and after two hours it still wasn't working and I couldn't go back to my university work until I could be in peace of mind about it and then all the comments disappeared out the window and then I panicked and asked a mod to sort it out for me and then he did and now I feel better.

But that's where all the comments have gone. I'm going to go and have a cup of tea and cry a bit, and then I can actually go back to university work.

Dude this is amazing. I got a strong feeling from the picture. But this put it into words.

"Aye! I see somethin' cap'n!"

"What it be lads?"

"Featured bar ho!"

Well, its not often that I read a story that makes me cry (Shut up, they be manly tears and you know it!) and this story made me shed a few tears. I commend thee of this story for it is one of the best I have ever read (though thats not saying much, as much as I should anyway). I have no idea how I caan put my feelings for this story into words, other then its a happy sad feeling. Thank you for writing this one. I am sure that every now and then I will go back and read it over, just to remember what it was about, and how it made me feel. Thank you again for writing this.

Many a Teenage Boy Tear were shed

BTW were there some Lord of The Rings references in this

#12 · 133w, 4d ago · · ·

Damn, that was amazing. I wish the star ratings were still in place so I could complain about not having a sixth star to give you. Bravo.

#13 · 133w, 3d ago · · ·

Gah! I cried. They weren't manly tears, as I'm a woman, but they were sad and meaningful nonetheless. Thanks for the great story, it was beautifully written and extremely thoughtful in its premise.

#14 · 133w, 3d ago · · ·

I thought it a very charming story indeed, and using the elderly CMC's as the main characters was an original way to approach it, along with Sweetie's granddaughter to give it a generational feel.  Well done, and I'm flattered to have played even a small role in inspiring it!

Wow. Ive never actually cried reading. i cant even remember the last time i cried. I choked up the moment twilight said "A long time ago, I used to look up there, hoping I would see a rainbow. I’d sit in my chair all day long, just waiting." I dont know why, I dont even think it was designed to be sad. But i felt a deeper meaning. A muscel under my adams apple tensed up and i started choking, literally choking. There was one point where I had to stop reading because i thought i was going to pass out. I've always wondered about what will happen when i get older and eventually die, i think this just completed what I couldnt understand and made me realize just how precious life really is. I feel old right now and  Im no where near the age to be worrying about the rest of my life. I havent even begun it yet. Thanks Tamar. I dont know what you did or how you did it. But you made this one hell of a powerful story.

Goodness me, I just finished watching The Cutie Mark Chronicles with my little sis, then I read this.

Very well written story, made me cry, thanks for that :raritycry:

You know i'm pretty much known as heartless and i rarely cry but this story was the first time i really felt sad enough to cry and it was due to a story based on a show for young girls. Now that really goes to show just how amazing this fanbase is. :pinkiesad2:

Not ashamed to say I shed man tears on this well written story. Also glad to know I'm not the only one though.

#26 · 133w, 12h ago · · ·

Very well written. Bittersweet without being either too sweet or too bitter.

#27 · 132w, 6d ago · · ·

Somehow I managed not to burst into tears, but it wasn't easy. Beautiful story.

I'd certainly like to learn more about the laws of harmony, the concept sounds interesting.

#28 · 132w, 6d ago · · ·

>>553429 It's the wonderful thing about writing. You casually invent something for plot convenience, and accidentally make up a whole new concept.

How did Twilight write the Laws of Harmony? Are they legally binding? How many laws are there? When did she write them? And what do they say?

I will leave that for somebody else to write, if anyone wants to.

Damn that was deep man, real deep. and i did cry, a little. but give me credit I've been stuck in the sad section for the last 2 days.

#32 · 132w, 2d ago · · ·

I may not have cried but I felt, which is just as important. Powerful writing. My jaw tightened, my eyes stung, and my stomach clenched. All those signs, for me at least, point towards a great story.

#33 · 131w, 6d ago · · ·

it so sad but good at the same time.

great job

#34 · 131w, 6d ago · · ·

wow. great job! it's very similar to "i might have been"

check out my read of it

I....I.... can't stop crying....

It isn't often I find a story that makes me cry like this. I mean I tear'd up at the Battle of Wethoof in The Ballad of Echo the Diamond Dog but I didn't actually cry outright. Kudos to you sir... Kudos for days....

#37 · 131w, 2d ago · · ·

Very sad, very heartwarming... and simply amazing...

#38 · 130w, 6d ago · · ·

So many manly tears have been shed.:pinkiesad2:

#39 · 129w, 4d ago · · ·

There are so many of these stories. They are all so similar.

They also always, invariably, reduce me to a weeping pile of goo.

Thanks for this story. As I said, the plot and setting are very common, but your writing and choice of characters added enough to make it feel unique. I think the "time for another adventure" line was my favorite, as Bilbo is best hobbit and that line was his very best, IMO.

#40 · 129w, 4d ago · · ·

I don't know why I love torturing myself with these kinds of heart attack inducing fics, but man do I, and yours nearly killed me several times over.  I clicked the thumbs up button like ten times, but alas, it only gave you one.

Amazing job.  I'm now going to go cry myself to sleep.  I hope I wake up in the morning...:raritycry:

This is fantastic, incredibly well written and contains all the sad themes of life that strick me right in the soul. This is the sort of writing I would use as a benchmark in how i live life. My little Pony & this wonderful story of yours. Yes I cried most of the way through, especially when noticing all the wonderfully subtle references to old ponies 'leaving' and the other gems in there.

*wipes eyes*

Thank you for this service ^^

#48 · 124w, 3d ago · · ·

Bless you sir. Bless you. You and all other authors who are so gifted and so..... wonderful as to create such magnificent stories that capture peoples imaginations, wrestle their emotions and fill people with joy and sadness. dread and adventure. You can write beautiful stories and tell wondrous tales that bring fans closer to the characters that we know and love, and that make us just as connected to said characters as they feel to each other. A great Traveler once said that if it's been thought of, it exists. And that makes me feel hopeful. That somewhere out in the Multiverse, there are characters that live and die, laugh and love. And that while we may not know it or see it, stories like this happen every day. That the mantears that we cry are not in vain, shed over/about something that isn't truly real. That when I look into space at night, I can dream about something tangible and real. And that is a truly wonderful feeling. Thank you.

#49 · 120w, 4d ago · · ·

Oh man, where do I start. This fic is one of those one's that if you don't start to feel that burn in your eyes, if not outright cry, then you know there's something wrong with you.

These fics maybe a dime-a-dozen throughout various fandoms, but rarely do you see one as well written and emotion inducing as this. This is one of those stories that no matter how many times I read, it will always make me start crying at just how, well I don't quite have the words but how, powerful the scenes are. It's a kind of bittersweet passing of an era, that you can't help but cry at knowing the world is just that little bit less bright.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm just going to go and reflect for a while about friends lost.
