In short, and without giving away any details. Basically.
A family - one way or another - had an opening, and he took advantage of it to get a permanent home.
I forgot to put it in the author's note, but I actually got the newspaper clipping styled fantasy spot from another story on this site. It was a great bit. And in this case a way to sneak some back story in.
I'll be doing Nano too! I just have to decide what story to do.... by tomorrow.

Thanks! I wouldn't worry too much about having a story idea. From what I understand about NaNoWriMo is that you probably won't have time to write a well thought out plot anyways!
Of course, that's easy for me to say. Not having a plan when I start writing is basically my standard method.
