" Their first date turned out alright thanks to the farm mare, but
I'm thinking you forget to paste in something?

Yeah... I thought I had everything, but apparently not It's all there now
"Straight" in the Leroverse is our bisexual.
Huh, Rarity being stallion-focused comes across as... Weird, as the original Xenophilia suggested that Dash was the only bent one.

I'm going by assumed relationships given by the show. Rarity's parents seem to be in a similar monogamist relationship as does Pinkie Pie's, so instead of writing in a bunch of characters and developing their personalities, I'd rather focus on the story. Not to mention you have to remember that even though Rarity may bed the occasional mare, I highly doubt she'd come to form an exclusive relationship with one even if a very small herd was formed. At most she'd likely join in like Rainbow would but not much more until she actually comes to love the other mare.

Well, the emphasis might be on 'seem to', it's entirely possible that all of the apparently monogamous couples are, in fact, in a herd, and we've just never seen the other members, because they weren't relevant- exceptions being the Cakes, since the show has focused on them enough that it's clear that it's just the two of them.
Keep in mind, the original fanfict made it very clear that the default sexuality was bisexuality, and the default family structure was the herd- being bent like Rainbow, or monogamous like the Cakes is both rare and seen as socially weird, even distasteful. It's better to default characters to being bi and interested in herding, unless them not is part of the plot, because if you keep writing characters as straight (or even gender preferred) and monogamous, it makes them stick out for no reason, and causes the cognitive dissonance that I keep experiencing- it feels almost like you're not really writing a Xenophilia story, which makes no sense.

To be honest, I agree with you and Ethereal simultaneously. You know how herds are not officially recognized as static family units and tend to fluctuate greatly until only a core is left? I think that's what has happened with most of these families where we see only one mare and one stallion. I think that either the other mares broke it off after something happened and couldn't be reconciled or joined temporarily to have a foal, raise it and then move on when the foal came of age. That's just my view on it and Rarity would make a kind of sense being skewed more straight, especially with all the romance novels she reads. Applejack and Pinkie Pie don't seem to have that problem to be honest and I do remember some comments of Rarity's in the original Xenophilia where she seemed happy for Rainbow Dash but wanted something more exclusive for herself.

Especially consider how Pinkie Pie's family live on a rock farm. It's not like there would be too many mares that would want to stick it out for the long haul except for the lead mare and quite possibly the second mare.

I guess I'm just too used to seeing them portrayed as straight as we know it in most of the stories I read. Although to be honest, I think that Rarity would be more skewed towards stallions, especially with how she envisioned her "Prince Charming" in the Grand Galloping Gala. I'll be sure to keep the "bi is straight" mentality for the others and I'll try to break away from my mental canon a bit more to keep the herd unit more firmly established. It's just a bit tricky when there's so little good material to read and expound upon :b

You have some interesting observations there, Divine. I guess that would make a lot of sense, especially since marriages in a free form society would be mostly for political alliances like how "No Room For Regret" frames it.
I must say, excellent writing thus far, you've certainly got my attention. Keep it up!

As far as I know, Rarity's preferences were never really established in the original, so I took cues from how she portrayed herself in the show and read a little between the lines from her comments with Rainbow Dash in the original and extrapolated from there. She seems largely interested in stallions, unlike most of the mane six whose preferences are mostly left up in the air.

Thank you very much I'll try my best

I think a big part of the issue is, well... Most Writers Are Human. We tend to interpret the Pony's behaviors from a human cultural and sexual perspective, even when the point of Xenophilia is explictly that they're not, and exploring those differences. Both me and Mike in his work, Divided Rainbow, had to specific keep in mind these difference as much as we possibly could to keep things as authetically Xenophilliac as possible.
I kinda agree with this point- but I'd say that'd be more true in the earlier days of making the herd, not when you have already children that have fully grown up, like Rarity or Pinkie, the herd's probablly long since stablized.
I could see breaking it off before getting too commited... but after you've already raised the foal together? That's... already quite a committment. I don't see many mares leaving after that point. I think the simplier explaination is we've just not seen them.
...You will have to keep in mind, most romance novels in Xenophilia would be about forming herds, because that's what romance is to ponies. (Remember, try to think like a pony!) This is explictly mentioned in the original stories. Rarity's romantic inclinations make her more likely to be straight, not bent, in my humble opinion.
Me and Mike took that to mean she wanted to be Lead Mare- Rarity's a romantic, and naturally, she'd put herself in the lead role- the dashing, charismatic mare that sweeps the stallion off his feet, and brings in wonderful, caring mares into her herd. Rarity's issue isn't her orientation, it's her romantic ideals.
Keep in mind- she's the element of genrosity, and ponies see monogamy as the height of selfishness, because you're condemning other mares to loveless lives. How could Rarity in good concience do that?
Me and Mike spotted that quirk, too, and quasi-jokingly explained it away that the other herdmothers had died of Ennui. (also implied that the Pie sisters were mostly mothered by different mares, some of whom were now absent for one or another).
Fair enough, though part of the point of Xenophilia is that it's not like most of the other stories out there. Also, keep reading, she's depicted as bi and lesbian plenty out there. I think the "Straight" bias is because she's pretty much the only one who's canonically shown interest in stallions.
As I said above, I think that's more her having a romantic ideal of finding the perfect stallion to start her herd with, with her as lead mare. It's open to interpretation- but that said- and I think this is my most important point here- If there's something that's not explictly stated, either in Xenophilia itself or in show canon- that can be interpreted either toward default human or Xenophilia's social/sexual/cultural norms- I think it's best to err in favor of Xeno's.
...Might I suggest the extensive Xenophilia fanfictions? It's not as if you're lacking in choice here! and most of the authors here are nice and more than willing to talk about theri opinions on Xeno and the world- me, Mike, Spinel, archonix, QuietMan, and more would be (I think) more than happy to share their perspectives with you.
I don't think the herd is quite as loose as Divine seems to imply, but yeah, it's less binding than marriage.
Plausible...? Yes. But Interest in males =/= bent. As said, I think it's more of a romantic ideal than a sexual preference... and since she talks about romance allot more (several times) than she does sex (never) on the show, I think it's more credible a position.
I was actually kinda thinking of writing up a listing of general Xenophilia conventions after all this discussion...

A general info dump compiled by several people cross checking the references would be a huge tool for anyone interested in (or currently writing) in the Xenoverse. I know I'd definitely comb through it very well to ensure accuracy because that's the sort of thing I'd prefer to do instead of trying to hunt down specific items in stories that may or may not have the reference I need, not to mention finding the specific chapter.
Now that I've thought about it, I think some of the major points of discussion/slightly-moderately conflicting opinion come from my inability to find what I need and extrapolating what I need to from whatever snippets I can find before my self imposed deadline comes up Thanks for putting up with my moderate lack of specific information and sticking with my story so far.

Agreed. But who would organize such an effort, and where would the collaboration take place?
HHmmm, much projectile nose bleeding, I foresee, in the future, for Galen, there is, yes.
