She doesn't expect a diplomatic mission to another kingdom, she doesn't expect to be swept up in the twisted plots of betrayal and murder of the Cervus kingdom, and she certainly doesn't expect to influence an entire nation.

Guards on the locked Starswirl the Bearded wing of the library, containing the most dangerous time spells known to ponykind --> "Go right in, Twilight Sparkle traipsing around in the middle of the night in an incredibly suspicious manner. Here, let me unlock that for your after-hours perusing."
Though I suppose if there's any area where Twilight has "admit on sight" access, it would be the library.

Black Cherry's coffee isn't overpriced, silly. That's a ridiculous notion.
As for Twilight's whole admittance thing, guards are there to keep the common riff-raff out of the castle. It's not so much a security thing as much as a schedule thing. (Do you REALLY have business in the castle?)
Plus, since Twilight was already in the palace at night during that episode, the guards assumed she was invited in, and acted accordingly.

I like stories like this, the more down to earth Equestria where there is cussing and real life situations such as “Scandalous" rumors, workman rights, and difficult political situations occur. The "candy-coated" are okay if I wanted to read a comedy, I just finished one so now on to the serious business of Diplomatic Intrigue...oh wait already finished the chapter...might as well start Game of Stones.
