4350702 Believe me, I know. Here's the thing, though. In addition to never directly mentioning what sort of 'training' the two put on him, Button himself commented on the issue.
That's one of the wonders of working with a combination of science and magic: being 100% scientifically accurate isn't a must.
That being said, here's another thing to keep in mind. During the hormone replacement therapy, in addition to estrogen, progesterone, and all those goodies, it is not uncommon for the transwoman to be prescribed androgen blockers, which in turn inhibit effectiveness of testosterone [note that this is not the most medically accurate description, as I am not an endocrinologist]. The dietary changes of course are important, and there are even certain herbal remedies/supplements that you can take to 'help'.
Equestradiol was used as a placeholder/catch-all so that rather than drown the story with information, the average* reader would get a vague idea that this isn't necessarily how it works in real life [see above quote], and that certain liberties are being taken to account for the presence of magic.
That being said, dietary changes will be touched upon in future chapters.
*The word average is used subjectively, as the sort of user who would find and read this story is perhaps extraordinary.
