Wow, this is so short, yet so thought provoking.
Maybe this isn't what you intended the story to mean, but I like to think that the nameless pony is a representation of everyone trying to find out who they are in life, and constantly rediscovering and changing themselves. And the present for Sweetie Belle (and Rarity) is a token for helping that person take yet another step in the long road to discovering what truly makes them whole. What makes up the entirety of who they are.
Sorry if this was to long or wordy of a comment to read. I guess I got a bit too into this story and looking for a deeper meaning in it.
