The Great Crystal War, five years of death and destruction is finally at its end. In a bold sneak attack, a small detachment of the Equestrian army's elite assaulted the very capital of the Crystal Empire. This was only made possible by one pony on the inside, only known as the King's Shadow, King Sombra's elite enforcer, assassin, saboteur, and apprentice.
As Equestria's forces besieged the city, the King's Shadow confronted his master and only barely succeeded in defeating the dark King, or so they believed. As Sombra was dying, he cast a spell and escaped through a magical mirror. The King's Shadow jumped through the mirror after his master to finish him off, only to suddenly find himself back in Equestria. But things were...different in this Equestria.

This story begins in an alternate world when the Crystal Empire returns and King Sombra takes over. The story will take place four years after season 3 The Crystal Empire-Part 1 and Part 2 episodes but will diverge from canon after the season 5 finale. (Thorax and the redeemed changelings will be present, but with some changes to fit the storyline.)
I'm an aspiring author and this is the first story I've actually concentrated on writing. At least five years were spent idly brainstorming (and working through my own confidence) before it got here. I hope it gets a good reception, and please enjoy!

This story is a sequel to 80 Days 'Til the World's Farthest Shore

Twilight Sparkle, the prodigal princess, has finally returned home from her extraplanar Sabbatical. At her side is a new apprentice, one newly minted Passport from a world very different from Twilight's own. Where once the Princess of Friendship sought to leave Equestria behind forever, now she seeks to return and see those she loved and left behind.

But the journey from the edges of the World That Is to Canterlot is perilous, full of horrors and dangers alien both to Equestria and Passport's own world. But with luck, and her teacher and employer's power, Passport might just survive the experience of being a pony long enough to meet the one pony on Equestria more important to her than any other.

What is a pony? If asked that question the average citizen of Equestria would probably respond with a confused look and a mention of the three pony tribes. A particularly astute pony might reply with four tribes, remembering to include the Thestrals. A pony of a scholarly disposition may also add a list of characteristics as well - manes, cutie marks, some form of innate magic, hooves, vegetarian diet, etc. This is the answer that would have been received for thousands of years, from before the unification of the three tribes until very recently. Until the failed Changeling invasion. With the reveal of something so foreign, yet at the same time so familiar, what it means to be a pony is no longer quite so clear and obvious. And while professors and philosophers argue, another question is forgotten in the uproar: What if the Changelings weren't the only ones who were hiding?

Hello, my name is Twilight Sparkle. My brothers are Shining Armor, captain of the Royal Guard, and a dragon named Spike that I hatched when I was little. I have five friends that help me wield the Elements of Harmony, artifacts that protect Equestria from evil. I have a few other friends that are less important, but still great ponies nonetheless.

One catch, though. I am also a changeling Queen, and the friends and family I just mentioned are all my subjects, and children as well. They don't even know it, but everything's working out alright, so no reason to tell them! After all, it's not like a giant wave of love energy could suddenly reveal all the changelings in Canterlot, right? Right?

Part 1, Revelation: Twilight Sparkle meets an old enemy that reveals a secret she's kept since she was named.

Part 2, Recollection: The Elements of Harmony try to get to the truth of the matter, changeling Queens begin their game of chess, Queen Citlali takes her Hive and runs from Canterlot.

Part 3, Reformation: Queen Citlali begins to grow her hive, Whitetail Hive takes some time to get used to the news, Princess Cadance dreams of a dark creature.
