It was a day like any other. Spring was in full bloom and with spring came Sumac Apple's sixth birthday. Alas, the day that he'll always remember will turn into the night that he can't forget. When night comes, so too come invaders to the peaceful, quiet city of Ponyville.

When Grogar's agents of darkness come to foalnap a sorcerer, the fight for Equestria's very future begins. In the span of one terrible night, the fate of a nation and the many who live there will be forever altered.

As always, there is a lesson to be learned.

Princess Celestia, in her infinite wisdom, sent Twilight Sparkle to Ponyville in order to learn about the Magic of Friendship; many years later, and after hundreds of adventures with the five amazing friends she made that day, she now stands watch over the last of them as they prepare for the end. Naturally, they refuse to go quietly into that good night.

After all, there's always time for one last spin around Equestria, right?

Princess Twilight Sparkle has recently returned from a diplomatic mission to Gryphonstone. While she has gone beyond the borders of Equestria many times in the past, this is her first official state visit as a princess.

As a way of celebrating her success Princess Celestia hosts a tea party, during which the other monarchs of Equestria share stories about diplomatic blunders. These include Cadance's bout with Saddle Arabian purity laws, Luna's near beheading, and Celestia's ordeal with limes.

Cerulean Skies has convinced herself that life itself has been forever ruined by her very existence. She is miserable in school and life at home is no better. Twilight Sparkle's experimental interplanetary drive has malfunctioned, stranding Starlight Glimmer, Spitfire, Cherry Berry, a changeling and a dragon on a hostile planet in another universe. With limited food supplies, very little magic, no communications with home, and no way to leave the planet, they must survive until somepony rescues them.

Fortunately they crashed right next door to another creature with the exact same problem- a creature named Mark Watney.

They're going to science the buck out of everything- and do whatever it takes to survive Mars and get everybody home.
