Dragons are remarkably resilient creatures. Perhaps the most dramatic example of this is their ability to bathe in molten rock as casually as a pony might relax in a hot tub. The temperatures involved would burn a pony before they even got close enough to touch it but dragons are made of sterner stuff.

For a dragon living among ponies this means it can be difficult to feel warm.

Long before moving to Ponyville, Spike struggles with this problem when Canterlot slips into the grip of winter. Eventually he braves the cold of the world outside his basket in search of warmth.

But it's Twilight who will be faced with the collateral damage.

A random standalone story that popped into my head the other day. Set a few years before Twilight and Spike move to Ponyville and before Spike becomes Twilight's assistant.

In Tartarus, a rather unusual situation unfolds. After being banished to the prison plane of Equestria, an unusual entity comes to a horrifying realization. He should not be here, he’s a good guy!

Sure he caused some havoc, but he was trying to protect trees and forests from development. Yes he crashed a few parties, but the silverware didn't match. Indeed, it was he who stole all the socks that didn't match, but it was an affront and crime against fashion. Okay maybe invading Canterlot in order to deliver a letter was a bit much, but it was an important letter.

After all, he really needed to know who was best princess.

Nothing he did was all that evil, he really was trying to be good. How could he be a villain? Obviously this is just a misunderstanding, right?

An illness kept Sandbar away from the School of Friendship just as quizzes were being given out. His friends all know how they did, but their hints are cryptic and not all of them are true. Twilight is able to sort out truth from falsity ... but can the reader?

Sometimes, at the end of the day, if I'm done with my chores and my studies, and it's Twilight's turn to cook dinner, I like to sit quietly on the front stoop of the library and think.

Twilight knew that there would be times she would find herself in over her head. When Princess Celestia decides that her proximity to a Village Hidden in the Everfree makes her a perfect candidate for participating in the village's introductory tour and citizenship ceremony, the young alicorn finds out just how little she really knows about her own world.

Twilight wakes with no memory of what happened last night. Or what she and her friends went through during the past two years. Or her friends.

As Spike looks to try and find a solution, he finds the other girls are nowhere to be found. The only help he gets is from two of the three members of the CMC. As they draw closer to figuring out who could have possibly caused Twilight amnesia and reversing everything, a different threat draws closer and closer, waiting for the right time to strike.

Sometimes I get impatient with how long I write and how long it will take before I get to a part I want to write, and then I write it anyway. (Which is why I'm calling this Eating Dessert First; it doesn't have much to do with dessert, no more than my other fics anyway, but it's me writing the "good parts" first.) This is a compendium of snippets from future parts of my fics, or single-idea scenes where I don't know if I want to write the rest of the fic, or character practice scenes -- basically anything pony that's out of its larger context, assuming there's going to be a larger context.

Because this is a compendium, it's tagged Random because literally any other tag (with the exception of Second Person, which I will probably never write in) could be included. I'll mark individual chapters with what tags they ought to have and what characters are in them.

Note: Cover art probably has nothing to do with the actual fic. Unless I do decide to do a snippet about Celestia and cake.

Tonight in Ponyville, something's going down. Something big. But Twilight Sparkle may not live to see it, as a mysterious assailant breaks into her home and kills her. But then someone else appears to her, a lost spirit that claims he can change her fate and save her life with inexplicable powers. And though she can't figure out how he's doing it, he does it and only the two of them remember. He's not supposed to be here, but he has to be here for a reason, right?

Many mysterious things will happen in this town tonight.

After Princess Celestia appoints Twilight Sparkle and her friends to be ambassadors to Earth, they decide to introduce themselves to the humans by appearing in a horse show, but they need someone to get them ready. They call on Megan, the legendary warrior who guarded ponykind in days of yore. Megan has banished or slain countless demons, but can she convince the ponies to hold still long enough for her to braid their manes?
