Over the course of Celestia’s life, she has been forced to watch her friends grow old and die, unable to give them the same longevity that she and her sister share. Even though she knows that she’d have to experience the pain of losing a dear friend again, she still cannot help but grow attached to a few particular ponies from each new generation. This pain is forever locked in her mind, but even then, she is able to keep her feelings of loss at bay.

But now, with the passing of somepony so close to her, she isn’t sure if she can deal with the aftermath.

In the wake of Princesses Celestia and Luna’s announcement for their planned retirement, Twilight and her friends were thrown in a tailspin! If that wasn’t bad enough, Grogar had united Cozy Glow, Sombra, Tirek, & Chrysalis together for his master plan!

However, Sombra had plans of his own as he broke off from the legion, and invaded the Crystal Empire! Upon hearing this, Twilight and her friends raced to action! Sombra put them under their worst fears, but they broke through his spell with the Elements of Harmony! He destroyed the Tree of Harmony, but they still prevailed! They beat him...twice, vanquishing him for good, as their most strongest weapon of all was their friendship!

But, what if something else happened?

What if Sombra’s spell was too strong for the even Mane Six to overcome? What if they failed? What if they joined his side, for him to reclaim all of Equestria? How different would it turn out? How would the royal sisters react? How would Discord react? Would it be up to someone else to save the day?

It probably would. The Mane Six would be doomed, but not if two certain planet-raising princesses and the lord of chaos have anything to say about it!

Princess Twilight Sparkle is as eternal as time itself, and yet holds a mortal heart. She knows loss, for she has lost. She knows love, for she has loved. What then, is there left for one who will forever remain?

Setting:
This takes place one-hundred years after the events of the previous story. Twilight is now nearing six-hundred years of age, and yet feels as if time has stood still for her.

Technology has advanced, civilizations had risen and fallen, and yet through it all, she has persevered...mostly.

Note: You will notice that technology has not advanced in the same order as that of humans has, with some advancements completely having been passed over. This is because this is a different world with different rules and a different line of physics and power sources. Keep that in mind. Also, do not expect Twilight to act the same as canon. Such a long time can change everything about who someone is, so keep that in mind and don't come to me shouting "OOC".

With that all taken in mind, enjoy the story.

Sometimes, bad things happen to good ponies. A year following a tragic incident, Twilight Sparkle returns to Ponyville to visit what she has been missing - her town, her memories, and most importantly, her friends. But will everything be as she remembers it?

I've read a bunch of shipfics that are all happy resolutions after the confession so I wanted to try an alternative. So here is a slightly darker TwiDash fic because I am a terrible person who must make ponies suffer. Oh God Why?!

Twilight knows this, but she's not prepared for the loss that shakes her heart.

When tragedy strikes, the hearts of the beloved are shattered. Tears are shed in mourning of the fallen.
But, as time does its part, most ponies begin to move on, as the memory of a lost friend becomes but a blur in the vast, continuous timeline that is life.
Most ponies move on with the help and support of their friends.
But what happens when the same friends that help a pony make it through the tragedy of losing a friend... a partner... vanish?
That pony remains caught in an unbreakable cycle.

Sad.
