Thorax is still getting used to living among ponies. They do so many strange and yet somehow wonderful and amazing things! Not so amazing, though, is his brother Pharynx's discovery that Thorax has been disobeying his orders and living openly among ponies. Desperate to avoid being dragged back to the hive as a traitor, Thorax lies, insisting he's only been pretending to gain the trust of these ponies so he can betray them and avenge Chrysalis. Now, somehow, he has to make that lie seem true, and things will definitely not go according to plan when he tries, even with the help of his new pony friends.

Twilight finds an ancient book in an abandoned catacomb at Hollow Shades. Upon discovering its secrets, she unleashes an ancient horror on Equestria. But as bad as that is, the poor Alicorn has bigger problems to contend with. Just what dark plans does the dreaded Nyarlathotep have in store for her?

Starlight's saved Equestria a couple of times, sure. But she's just there. Someone else could have done that, and been there, to take her spot as Twilight's student. She's not...well, anything. What's her role? Just to be the sidekick? What does her cutie mark even mean? Control...manipulation? She had no idea. Sometimes, it's not enough to have people to talk to. Despite being surround by friends, she's never felt more lonely.

No important political meetings to attend? Check! No letters to answer? Check! A magical and child-safe gift for Flurry Heart that she's sure to love? Check!

Her schedule was clear. Shining and Cadence were off on vacation. She'd prepared all her materials. Twilight Sparkle was more than ready to spend a fun-filled weekend babysitting her favorite niece.

But she wasn't prepared for King Sombra's return. Nopony could prepare to be trapped with him inside a storybook of fairy tales.
