The ae thing is called a diphthong. It's a combination of two vowels into a single sound.
I agree that archaeology should be spelled that way because the other cognates of the word, such as archaeologist still have the archaic structure. Of course, English is a silly language with the most inconsistent of "standardized" spellings, so maybe the inconsistent dropping of the diphthong has a purpose. Etymology is fun!
Give me a night alone with a book, or story-driven RPG over a party any time. Heck, I'll even choose a good book over people I know, because I find the fantastic more engrossing than the mundane.
Some random questions for you though, Ponky:
Would you feel flattered, abashed, or slighted if I decided to borrow your idea of an audio/visual interaction with people asking questions? I'm thinking of maybe putting together an Ask Warden Things podcast-type thing about writing/editing, ponies, and my incredible lack of creative drive. Because I also lack a camera, I would have to forgo the awesome power of visual stimulation.
Have you read any fiction or fanfic recently that has had an effect on you philosophically?
Have you ever read any of L. E. Modesitt Jr.'s novels? I suggest you try out the Spellsong Cycle. It's a story about a universe where music, and singing especially, is magic.
If you had absolute power over a society, would you seek to limit your own power and that of any successors, or continue a line of strong, absolute rulers? If the latter, what measures would you take to ensure future rulers are beneficial? Would you have a council elect an absolute ruler, a ruler appoint someone--specifically not of his blood--as a successor? It's a fun thought experiment in any case.
Lastly, what is the most aesthetically pleasing chord progression?
a. I'm maybe a bit surprised that you haven't written many stories that involve music or musicians, considering how prolific a songwriter and singer you are. Is it too personal to put into words or have you just not gotten around to it yet?
