What do you all think of Queen Chrysalis? And, what's a really good fic centered on her as the main character? Think no more on the second question. -3-

Someone asked me the same question recently, so I still have the answer prepared.

Chrysalis: I feel there are two levels to her character. On an interpersonal level, she's arrogant, self-centered, foolish, abrasive and does not care about others. On a greater level, she's ruthless and willing to commit any evil for the good of her people. If it turned out killing ponies (harvesting souls?) would mean would the changelings never know hunger again, she’d start planning genocide immediately. But she won’t do anything too bad if the greater good of the hive isn’t involved. The important part is that she’s maybe on the darker side of grey, not completely evil, and thwarting her on every step is a perfectly justifiable but not actually good deed.

I think she, as well as the whole changling race, have great potential. Of course, I also see them as more than just a hive mind with a leader, I see them as an odd mixture of both that and the average pony. Chrysalis leads her changlings with a motherly love and compassion when necessary, and a firm hoof or an intimidating stare as well. Though changlings aren't all born from her naturally, she still views them as her children as well as her subjects. Of course, this all ties into my head cannon, so I'm not sure if this is how she actually acts.

How I feel about Chrysalis... what a loaded question. On one level I sympathize with her plight, she is trying to look out for her race as any good leader should be... but beyond that I put her up with Discord with characters that have vary little redeeming values. She is arrogant, malicious, and a megalomaniac who was willing to enslave an entire race which could have ended with the deaths of millions of ponies (she is based of the Succubi after all). Though that doesn't mean I don't have added some depth to her as I worked her into my headcanon, I have her being for more than a demon she is a child who nearly lost her life protecting her mother and was tainted by the creature attacking her mother... and was ostracized from her herd after her mother passed. All she wants is her mother's love and fells the only way to gain it is to wipe out the descendents of her herd, the Three Tribes, and kill the descendents of her younger sibling, the Alicorns.

I may redeem her in the end, she will still be a villain

458111 Same here, I see the chanelings as beings who would attribute precious memories to unchangeable things like, say a necklace to remind them of their uniqueness.
458264 To me, I sympathize wholeheartedly. I think that maybe something drove them out of their lands. Maybe she invaded Equestria based on stories. I.E. Celes banishing her sister, Imprisoning Discord. Perhaps they attacked out of fear.

How I feel about Chrysalis? I terms of strictly what the show has, she is a very well designed character and has a good motivation, but she doesn't seem to be a good military tactician other than zerg rushing the enemy with overwhelming numbers; which generally results in high casualties for the rusher's army as well. She doesn't really accomplish anything after defeating Celestia and gets defeated rather easily. However, she is dedicated to her race, seeking to overthrow Equestria for a sake of making the changeling race more powerful. At the same time, her slaking off a bit after taking Canterlot shows that she's possibly more into it for her own personal power and sees her part done after capturing the throne. Though, this could just be because she doesn't think the ponies can counter them at this point.

For what's not shown, the idea of an insectoid race is a fascinating one. While they aren't strong in personal combat and group tactics, they would naturally be very good at reconnaissance due to their abilities. The fact that Chrysalis was able to so easily get close to Celestia is testament to that, even though it was probably mainly because no one had seen the changelings before. Due to their need to absorb love and conquering locations to gain it as fast as possible, they remind me of army ants, who constantly change locations while capturing all available nearby food sources.

For fanfics, my personal favorite is Anonymous Pegasus's Transcend, where Chrysalis disguises herself as a unicorn while she regains her power while feeding off of a earth pony who lives in the forest.

I think of Chrysalis and her changelings as a terrible, amoral force, like a swarm of locusts. I have never agreed with the idea of her being like a succubus. She is not meant to be sexy, she's meant to be a disgusting, creepy bug. Listen to the sounds she makes as she walks around in her true form--gooey sounds and clicking sounds. And the rest of the changelings can literally crawl up and down walls.

Anyway, overall I would describe her as alien and arrogant. She thinks she understands ponies, but she really doesn't. She doesn't bother researching Cadence's personality, she just figures, "She's a princess and princesses are snooty and rude, right? Yeah, I can do that." I would guess, too, that her concern is for her hive as a whole, not with individual changelings.
