Fanfiction Reading Update #159 · 8:50am Nov 2nd, 2014

With the bookshelf system now ravaging jimmies across the site, there must be some changes to the Fanfiction Reading Update. After several long years living in exile, the Tracking feature has made it's triumphant return. For those who can't claim to be oldfags, the Tracking feature was a former feature along side the Favorites feature that would update you when a story updated. Favorites was reserved for your... favorite stories. I almost exclusively used the Tracking feature and rarely favorited fics (since few could claim to be my favorites). When the two were merged together, I was stuck.

But no more. From now on, all fics that I would have previously “favorited” will now instead be tracked. If the stories end up being really good, then they can be promoted to favorites—since I'll actually consider them my favorite. All stories currently in my Favorites will remain grandfathered in there, because I'm lazy and don't feel like filtering through them.

In addition, canceled stories will now be kicked from whatever list they're in to a “Deadfic” folder. Now, onwards to the fics.

Morbid Curiosity updates and starts flexing that M and gore tag with Twilight starting to shift from a clinical sociopath into the more evil one that most media portrays them as. Probability of [Grimdark] ending: 70%.

D=S-M updates with the body count growing RIP Fluttershy and the false flag (?) operation's culprit still being unknown. With a Mane Six death, the [Grimdark] probably skyrockets to 90%.

What Choice Do I Have continues the grimdark trend that's been set so far as it marches merry toward an omnicide ending that would rival Not My Destiny's. There's still a faint glimmer of a hope spot, though—no canon characters have died yet. Probability of [Grimdark] ending: 93%.

Through a Glass, Darkly updates with a relativity tame chapter that has Twilight and Dash both settling in to the new plot as Discord ratchets up the Solar rebels plans with his own.

Memoirs in Ink and Blood updates with Blueblood joining the grimdark fray and showing off some rare genre savviness.

The Itch updates with a brief chapter that could foreshadow the story's plunge into the menacing dark and tragedy tags that continue to loom large. Probability of [Grimdark] ending: 70%.

For Halloween, I decide to read Amnesia based on a recommendation. Sadly, the story failed to live up to the hype as everyone felt OOC and the pacing felt very rushed. At first, I had hoped it was due to the plot twist at the end (it's all a dream, etc.), but with the villain's “reveal” at the end, it became apparent that wasn't the case.

Having previously cut As Twilight Falls, I reread the first ten chapters since I totally forgot why and remember the severe OOC moments, idiot balls/poor communication kills, and utter failure to understand utilitarianism that are hallmarks of bleh evil!Twilight fics. It remains cut.

Trick or Oneshots!

Very seldom do I read really bad fanfics, but Changing the ColorOf [sic] Apples caught my eye due to how unintentionally hilarious its synopsis was. A read through of the short story confirmed my initial suspicions and caused my sides to succeed in getting to orbit where the Antares rocket failed. I don't think I've laughed this much because of a story in a long time. It gets favorited for it's trouble.

It's the mournful sound of Deadfics.

As part of the reorganization, Not Suitable for Celestia is unfavorited and transferred to the Deadfic shelf.

A Still more Glorious Dawn Awaits is also unfavorited and joins Not Suitable for Celestia in its new home.

I can't get fat, I'm an alicorn! is unfavorited and added as well.

My Only Sunshine meets the same fate as the others.

The Dark Apprentice, however, remains favorited due to the combination of it actually being one of my favorite Twiluna clopfics and my stubborn refusal to accept its abandonment.

I'm shocked and horrified to discover one of the very few good [Human] fics, From Skies Above, has met this horrible fate. As with The Dark Apprentice, it will remain favorited due to it's superb take on first contact even if it does still use the stupid magically resistant human cliche.

Black Box is added to the rapidly expanding shelf.

Cadance Rising thankfully becomes the last fic to be added to the deadfic list.

And that's all I read for the dayweek.

# of story updates remaining: 365.
# of “Read Later” stories remaining: 999.

Yeah you do. : |

I have exactly the same system as my shelves. Only difference is that I have a shelf where in there are books for my little brother, who is also a fervent FimFiction reader but too lazy too search through the site for the pearls. We are both waiting on a real shelf sharing service...

The loss of A Still More Glorious Dawn frustrates me. I was really enjoying that story, dammit! I still have hopes it will some day return, but...

The day the bookshelves went live, I spent about an hour and a half and went through, sorting my stories between Favorites and Tracking. Tracking is stuff I like enough to read but Favorites all have at least a couple elements I really, really, really liked. I may make a separate bookshelf for Awesome stories, ones that I feel are just head and shoulders above the rest. That requires effort, though, and I'm all out of that right now.

Culling cancelleds from my RIL was fun, by which I mean often heartbreaking. D:

All stories currently in my Favorites will remain grandfathered in there, because I'm lazy and don't feel like filtering through them.

That's the solution I hit upon, for the exact same reason

In addition, canceled stories will now be kicked from whatever list they're in to a “Deadfic” folder.

I really should make one of those. :fluttercry:

I just keep the hiatus and cancelled fics in my 'incomplete' folder in the futile hope that they will magically update sometime in the future. That's the folder I just do a complete-only look to see what needs to be transferred to the read it later list.

Also, your posts are really hard to add to the big master review list. Must be a defensive adaptation.

Thanks for the mention xTSGx. :rainbowkiss: Hope ya enjoyin it.
