Panels, Stats, and Stuff · 5:30pm Aug 18th, 2014
Hi guys. So, first things first, I spent last night doing things that weren't sleeping. More specifically I went over all the entries for Equestria Daily's Outside Insight Contest and made an approximate count of all the various non-pony perspectives used. Some races are represented about as well as you'd expect, such as Changelings and Griffons (though some people were surprised that they weren't even more common than they were), others are less well-represented than you'd have figured (Zebras ended up being pretty rare), and some races just came out of the blue to get a handful of stories.
There are eight stories about Windigos and seven about Trees. Trees.
TREES.
Here's a link to the doc I compiled on it. Fair warning that the counting happened late last night, and I didn't check every entry too thoroughly, since I've resolved not to read the competition too heavily until all's said and done with the contest. So it's possible that somewhere I miscounted or slightly misrepresented a couple of viewpoints. That said, the results should be pretty accurate, if not absolutely so. Take a look!
In other news, courtesy of glorious chap Cloudhammer, the Do's and Don'ts fanfiction panel's finally been uploaded to Youtube! Panelists were me, Pen Stroke, Burakku_Pansa, alexmagnet, Golden Vision, and Sunchaser (with big ups to Jake the Army Guy and Pav Feira for handling things in the audience). The vid's great quality, and includes some of the pre-panel horsing about and my ascendance to Hatlord status at the end, so give it a watch if you've got the time. I'd like to think it was all pretty cool.
Cloudhammer also recorded the Adventure Stories panel, so if that interests you, feel free to check it.
Have a nice day, folks.

Thank god the video includes 7 mins at the start of you playing with a balloon.
But I am confused, Obs. Who is that beardless man in the video pretending to be you???
Trees are love, trees are life.
What pony pretender stole my Cranky thunder?
Next blogpost is in the works! This should take me up to 30-something.
Couple of surprises for me, today :)
2380212 Obs is in reality a beard wearing the flayed skin of a man.
Trees, huh? Well, that's interesting at the least, though the idea that seven people decided to use trees leaves me quite surprised and intrigued by this sudden widespread fascination for Fluttershy's husbando.

I'd like to be a tree.
Oh, and I stand by that statement at 32:18, but I still love ya Obs. Just not, you know, THAT way.
I think that I shall never see, a fic as lovely as a tree... except for mine, of course (Which is about the tree.)
I'm still shocked by the fact that I was the only buffalo fic, and I didn't even write my entry for the contest.
Also, I'm sure all the treefic people thought that they were being very clever. So did the windigo people. Little did they suspect that everyone else would be equally clever and do the same bloody thing.
So far those are the only two panels I've seen uploaded anywhere. :B Any word on others?

Not a clue. Bronycon ostensibly has plans to upload all the panels they filmed, but I have no idea as to when that'll be.

I wrote a Zecora story, but it kinda grew out of the 15k word limit and I just couldn't bring myself to cut it down (like I did disastrously for your "Most Dangerous Game" contest). However, I will soon be publishing chapter One of a Zecora based fic that will be called Outland. So there.

Maybe we should bug Bleeding? :B

I THOUGHT I WAS GONNA BE SPECIAL
WHO THE HELL ELSE EVEN REMEMBERS WINDIGOS BEING IN THE SHOW
GOD DAMMIT
Please tell me that at least one of them is about Celestia and Luna being the windigos in the story:

No stories about rocks?
This must be rectified. I'll type up what would have been my entry—had I been more diligent—and send you all a link.

I don't know nothing. I'm actually shocked you have a video at all. All I know is that the AV guys have been commended for their ongoing efforts post con.

There's one story that was a rock. It's listed in Other.
2380739
I do! Heck, I even used Windigos in the first myth in my story, though the story is told from the point of view of Falling Rocks, Buffalo Brave.

Took me a bit of looking through your stories before I realized that the story was actually on gdocs.
My first idea was to make something from the point of view of the beehive in Twilight's library; perhaps I should have gone with it
Oh my God, you don't look anything like your avatars. What is this madness?!
I assume the dearth of zebra fics is because people have been frightened away by the thought of having to write rhyming dialog. (I really really hope we'll see another zebra in the show, who doesn't talk like Zecora, so we can in good conscience have zebras that we can actually write.)
2382698 Only if people are so unimaginative that they can't conceive of other zebras being – dun, dun, dun – different. Sadly, this is likely the case.
Personally, I'm stunned there weren't any Spike fics. Poor little guy gets so little love.

There were a couple. Not as many as might've been expected, I guess. But a couple.
I think the problem with the title "Do's and Don'ts of fan-fiction" is that it led audience members to think there are do's and don'ts of fan-fiction. So they came prepared with questions about whether specific things they wanted to do were do's or don'ts, and the answer was always... it depends. As demonstrated in your recent fic contest.
