Um...I have a teeny tiny problem... · 11:01pm Jan 3rd, 2014
...Yeaaaah...You know that computer of mine, that some of you may have noticed me complaining about some? How it's lousy and I wish I had a new one? Well...
...um...
It's also the computer I write my stories on and it kind of...um...bricked. Kaput, kablammo, died, bit off more than it could chew, is pushing up daisies.
This...may be a problem.
As I write this from a potato-like machine in my parents' basement, I realized that well...stuff. I'm kinda in for it aren't I?
This may throw a wrench in my plans...
So um...
Hope I get this cleared up quickly, or I'm boned in more ways than one (given that the semister starts...like...next week).
Have some...butter?
Google Docs.

The problem is...I kinda lack a 'puter of my own to well...type with? And it's been about 20 minutes, and this computer I'm using now is already pissing me off.
I go back to university next week, and it's kinda hard to use GDocs when your laptop is definitely deceased!

Well, I meant that you should have stored everything on there.
1679125
Well...yeah.
I back my stuff up, though I just use a flash drive.
...though as I already mentioned, unless I learn um...techo-necromancy...um...or something like that, I can't do a whole lot with it.

Well, it depends on just what happened.
If the hard drive is fine, you just need to hook it up to a new computer and you're fine.
Was gonna say, USE THIS! Not to be rude, but you probably should. 1679110
that really does suck A LOT hope it gets resolved
Sorry to hear that, probably a no brainier but you could try buying a used on craigslist or the other big place on the web..but that's whole another issue, you could try taking it to tech stores they might be able to help you out..but again..whole new issue, hope you manage to solve your mess.

Uh-oh, college without a computer is definitely NOT fun. I learned that the hard way. Hope everything gets butter- I mean better soon!
At least you got backups.
Do you know what the problem was?
Although the price for new parts can be as much as some computers.
For an example, new HD TV, RAM the size of a finger, same price.
If all else fails and the local tech shop cant cast "raise dead", my last ditch plan Z is to usually hit the pawn shops, especially now.
People will be dumping their "Oh that's sooo LAST year" laptops there now that they got their spiffy new Xmas offerings...
Aw....Well.....Damnit....
That's why I use Google Drive. I have all my fics backed up, and whenever I save them on my computer they're updated there. My OCD forces me to save all currently open docs every night before I go to bed - even if I haven't done anything with them - and then double check that they're saved.
However, as of yet my massive library of pictures is not backed up.
Also,
1680191 is a good idea, and you can still transfer the hard drive's contents to another computer too. My laptop is almost 2 years old and it hasn't let me down. Buying a 1 year old laptop will still be fine. Just be sure to make sure it's totally clean.

Have you tried turning it off and back on again?
Yeah. That probably won't work. Anyways what you should do is simply upgrade to a new computer. I'm sure there are companies that buy broken machines for scrap. Sell your old one, after extracting the HD, and then, throw that hard drive into your new computer.
If don't have the $$ for a new one:
Figure out what died.
I'm going to take a wild guess and say your hard drive crashed, but I don't actually know what's wrong, because I haven't seen anything. Assuming it is your HD, the fix is simple, get an external hard drive, and plug it in. Install some OS on it before hand though, so your computer has something to boot into.
You should be operational if the HD is the problem. As for the data on the old one:
click here if you want to learn about HD recovery.
If you go to your local electronics store, they will get a way to recover data for you.
Now if the thing doesn't turn on at all, I can't really do much until I know the power source, what type of computer it is, etc.
My first recommendation though, is to get it looked at by a professional. Assuming you want to salvage it at all.

Given that it's 4 years old, which is the average lifespan of a computer? I'm just getting a new one.
Sooo....Chapter is now delayed by alot?
Always backup EVERYTHING. I Am paranoid of this happening to me. Which is why I have all my stories on a usb, uploaded to Google pluses, and I amthinking of savingtheto my oleoutlokacount. But my paranoia isn't going to help you muchafter the fact.
However if the story is saved to your hard drive you could bring it into your closest computer store and have the people there get your information back.
