Adventure Review # 1 - Dissonance · 9:33pm Mar 22nd, 2013
Heya everyone, I figured that, while I absolutely love Sweetie Belle fics in general, I love with an equal amount of passion, a good adventure. While I was mildly apprehensive about doing a review of a story that is not yet complete, I find that watching a story being written chapter by chapter is an experience that can be perhaps more enjoyable than reading the completed story in one go. This is one such story that I've been following for a while:
Dissonance, written by Plebeian.
It's a story that follows Mellow Note, a pegasus suffers terrible tragedy, yet, through his own struggling attempts, is able to find and hold onto something worth living for.
Now, what has my attention in this story are a few things:
1 - I find the two main characters of this story to be well fleshed-out and their interactions are quite believable. And the tragic situation that they are pulled into only serves to promise that these characters will see a fair amount of growth before the end. I look forward to seeing how they will struggle against the conflict that has enveloped them, and what role they'll play in the larger scope of things.
2 - This story holds a potential for great world-building and a sight of the earlier years of Equestria, before it became a mostly-utopia as we know it. I can only begin to imagine what sort of world the protagonists will lead us to discover before the end. Dark, assuredly, but also, perhaps something more than that.
3 - It's not completely dark, there are moments of levity that sparkle through, like the glimmering shine of a distant star peaking from between the clouds. And the fact that Mellow Note notices this and cherishes those moments is not lost on the readers. It's a great way to balance the tragedy and leaves me eager to read more.
I understand that this type of story may not be everyone's cup of tea, but if you are looking to follow a story and watch as it slowly unfolds, then give this one a look. Perhaps you will find it as fascinating as I do.

Adventure fics are fun! Almost as fun as Sweetie Belle fics.... now we just have to find someone who can do both.... hmmmmm,,,, got nothin' just kidding haha
Seems like something I'll have to check out sometime, but I'll be waiting for it to be complete regardless. It's not fair to the story or the author to start reading it and then lose track of it halfway through, which I have done for every single fic I've read that's incomplete I think.
939511 That's understandable. I personally love tracking fics as that I feel have great potential. It's neat when you can see the author become a stronger writer as the story progresses.
I'm surprised no one has commented yet. Maybe you just don't have the more active followers? Anyway, I myself enjoy a good adventure, but it's usually more geared towards characters I am familiar with. Perhaps in time, I will be able to come to read and enjoy this one as well.
By the way, I recommend the 'Upheaval:' stories if you want adventure and magic. Both of the current stories are here on FiMfiction, but I haven't been following the second one since forever because updates aren't as frequent as they used to be. There are other adventures that I like, but I can't say that I remember them right off the bat.
Are you going to be playing HotS tonight? It'd be fun to play a game together, whether we face the A.I. or not.
939539 I only got my laptop tonight, staying over at my parent's place, since it's closer to work tomorrow. This laptop ain't good for much other than surfing the web and writing, it doesn't meet the specs for SC2 unfortunately.

I'm guessing it's an HP Mini, correct? Most other comps meet the required RAM, and graphics really isn't too much of an issue. Only thing you really need is a fairly smooth processor.

I've tried it and it 'technically works', but it's visually unbearable and is a bit choppy at times. I also have no mouse with my laptop at the moment and I've tried playing it with a track pad before... it doesn't work too well...

Laptops tend to play SC2 at a lower graphics level than desktops, so that's expected. Even this one isn't able to play as well as I know some notebooks can, but that doesn't stop me. As far as choppiness goes, that's the processor more than the RAM if your laptop is fairly new.
If you want a portable gaming experience, you'll need an Ultrabook, as those can usually support the higher tiers of VGA cards, up to 32GB RAM, and usually come with powerful processors that can compete with desktops.
By the way, how do you go from Bronze to some other tier? I have no idea how that works.

Try reading "The Sweetie Chronicles: Fragments" by Wanderer D. it's technically a bit of everything, but it certainly is thick on the 'Dark' and 'Adventure' tags, especially once chapter seven comes out.
There's also "Scion of Chaos", but you wouldn't be here if you didn't know about that already.

By the way, have you read "Upheaval: Breaking Point"?
939968
Nope, but it's been updating for a long time on EqD, I've certainly seen it. The next long series I want to tackle is 'The Immortal Game'.

"Upheaval: Breaking Point" isn't the one that's been updating for a good while now. That's its sequel, "Upheaval: Reckoning". The first one isn't even as long as TSC, but I'm not so sure the sequel is going to be less than 200k words at this point.
I can definitely say you should read at least the first one, but that's for you to decide when and if you will.
I almost did a spit-take when I found this. Apparently, I had forgotten to watch you when I read through Scion of Chaos.
It really is exciting to read others' thoughts of my story. While I know what I'm trying to put out there, it's hard to be sure if I'm actually getting my messages across. Judging by this review, I've made them visible enough.
Thank you for the acclaim! I've actually caught a few more favorites because of it!
Wow !
Thanks!
It is fascinating story and I am truly thankful for the hint
