Na-shuul, a violent and dark pony, dabbled too far in to the dark arts of unicorn magic. His punishment for such a transgression was to keep the very things he wished to summon inside of The Inferno. Na-shuul has been kept sealed by the strong runes underneath Canterlot, however these runes are fading, and a servitor of Na-shuul has kidnapped Rainbow Dash. With all others too busy fighting off the dark servitors at Canterlot, Fluttershy must delve in to The Inferno to save Rainbow Dash, and all of Equestria.

Like you said, all the elements of harmony need to be together for them to work. Na'shuul can only be killed by the elements, and as long as one is absent they cannot kill him.
Also, having Rainbow the dashing heroine and Fluttershy the damsel in distress is just too regular. Having FShy save rainbow's plot for once mixes it up alot.

2738904 Na'shuul didn't capture her, a servant of him did while she was asleep and unaware of the danger at the time. He knew this was when it would be easiest to kidnap her, as a flying shape coming out of Rainbow's house would be regular.
Na'shuul was one of the original unicorns, alongside Starswirl the Bearded. He went in to the shadow magics of unicorn power, while Starswirl went in to the celestial side. When Na'shuul discovered the inferno, he attempted to summon power from there and went bonkers. Na'shuul had to be banished by Celestia and Luna in danger of Equestria being taken over by the evil creatures of the Inferno.
